Message from Region IX’s E-Board
Region IX consist of NY and NJ undergraduate, graduate and medical schools. We are proud of our amazing legacy of
community service and pipeline enrichment. We work hard and play hard, as you will be able to see in our photo section. We
are also very passionate about the SNMA Mission of increasing the number of competitive underrepresented applicants and
their retention/completion of Medical School.
We are proud of the MAPS chapters that have made their voices and strength seen very year with their constant participation
in regional and national events and offices. Our SNMA Chapters have lived up to the previous theme of "Reaching back to
move forward." We are sure that the theme for 2015-2016 will be something they will be just as passionate for
"#BlackLivesMatter - Social, Cultural and Health Equity and Competency".
Over the last several years we have noted the increase in death of underrepresented or underserved communities by violence
and/or health complications that could have been prevented. So this year we are going to educate ourselves as a region through
our regional and national events so that we can go back to our respective communities and teach - "Each one Teach one". Our
region has always represented through our service now we hope to represent by being the example to follow.

GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS
Satarie Thelma Edwards Minority Medical Scholarship Fund
Deadline: November 30, 2015.
To apply: Submit application package to [email protected]
The Satarie Thelma Edwards Minority Medical Scholarship Fund is now available to SNMA members. The $50,000 fund
honors Satarie Edwards or Thelma, as she was affectionately called, who epitomized courage, ambition, perseverance and
immutable resolve. Her unwavering edict was that education is unequivocally the key to success, and her humble beginnings
did not preclude the attainment of ultimate success.
Satarie Thelma Edwards strongly believed in the dogma that with the formula of strong work ethic, perseverance and steadfast
motivation, every goal is procurable. She was a great mother and an excellent teacher by profession, but also served as a
counselor and a leader within her community by imparting knowledge, sage advice and guidance to everyone she encountered.
Although her life was abbreviated on earth, her tenets and values live on perpetually.
Satarie Edwards, raised all three of her children in Jamaica, and despite numerous encumbrances, she successfully instilled in
them all the values described herein. This scholarship was therefore established, by her family, in honor of her unflappable
credo, her life and her legacy.
As such, the Satarie Thelma Edwards Minority Medical Scholarship candidate(s) must demonstrate unquestionable
commitment to achieving academic excellence in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Two to five scholarships will be awarded in her honor to outstanding medical students who are in their first or second year of
study. SNMA members are encouraged to apply.
Qualified candidates must be:
• A first or second year medical student,
• Interested in a career in oncology,
• Required to complete a clinical rotation outside of the student's medical school at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Florida
(https://moffitt.org), and
• A member of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA).

Dear Supporters of the ASH Minority Medical Student Awards Program (MMSAP),
Last year we celebrated a decade of excellence in providing hematology research experience for minority medical students
through the MMSAP program. This year we want to build off of the momentum gained during the 2015 meeting by embarking
on a robust recruitment and outreach effort for the 2016 cohort. We could really use your help to grow the applicant pool this
year by spreading the word and identifying great mentors for the program.
Here are a couple of ways to spread the word to your colleagues, students, mentees and other appropriate networks as you see
fit to promote the program.
1. MMSAP 2016 Poster - Attached is a pdf version of the poster for the 2016 awards cycle for electronic usage. If you
would also like to receive a poster to post at your institution, please contact Milen Yishak at [email protected] to
request one.
2. ASH Minority Recruitment Initiative (MRI)
a) MRI Spotlight on ASH TV - You can include in your emails the following link to a 2:30 minute clip from last year’s
celebration that highlighted the work ASH is doing to promote and support diversity in hematology. The clip is called ASH
Minority Reception.
b) MRI in The Hematologist – You can include in your emails a link to an article from the September/October issue of The
Hematologist called ASH Minority Recruitment Initiative: For program winners, the journey is the destination. This article
features ASH Committee on Promoting Diversity member Dr. Chris Flowers in the section titled From ASH-AMFDP Scholar,
to ASH Mentor, to ASH Leadership. Additional features are a multiple-year MRI award recipient, a returning and 1st year
MMSAP participant and the 2015 cohort.

Looking for Volunteers to become ASH MMSAP Mentors
ASH is recruiting research and career-development mentors for the MMSAP. In order to serve as a research mentor, one must
be an ASH member who can assume the responsibilities of overseeing the MMSAP participant's work and progress. Career-
development mentors are ASH members who are available to provide professional guidance, career development, and positive
role modeling.
1. Please email us names of ASH members you feel would be great research and/or career development mentors. Send list
As a reminder:
The MMSAP includes both research and mentoring components. Participants receive a stipend to complete an eight- to 12-
week summer research project with a research mentor. The mentoring begins during the application phase and continues
throughout medical school and residency. In addition to the mentoring, students receive a variety of immediate- and long-term
benefits, including:
· A $5,000 stipend
· A travel allowance of $2,000 for attending the ASH annual meeting
· Complimentary subscriptions to Blood, the official journal of the Society
· Networking opportunities at the ASH annual meeting with members of the Society’s Committee on Promoting Diversity
and leadership, NIH representatives, and other trainees

underrepresented in health-related sciences in the United States and Canada, including American Indians or Alaska Natives,
