Not all birdstrikes occur at low level.

Eagle Strike- • FL110 ( 11,000ft) • 280 kts ( 518 kph) • On descent Century Mine, FNQ

Anatomy of a Birdstrike

Birdstrike on final to YBRY (Barimunya)

Aircraft Fokker F70 Description of event:

• Birdstrike approximately 1000ft on final approach Runway 10 YBRY

• After landing small blood streak on

fuselage found. • Nil damage and nil critical area

impact • Intakes for ACM and engines appear

clear • Engineering notified

Anatomy of a Birdstrike

13

• No damage to aircraft but due to maintenance provisions under the current regulations, engineering assessment was required.

• Barimunya is 1.5hrs flight time from YPPH (Perth). This is the closest maintenance base.

• Aircraft cost recovery 3hr ferry with engineer $20,000 AUD

• Disruption to passengers 3-4hrs resulting in missed connections and site disruptions.

• Potential for penalty clauses to be invoked against contract.

Identifying the Risk. What have we done?

14

Identified that birdstrikes were one of our high operational risks. In 2009 a company wide Threat Analysis Report was competed. This identified high risk airport within the network were identified. Outcome from report; • Changed S.O.P to include THREAT Briefings. • Wildlife threats become part of this new briefings format. • Developed pilot education material. (Accident Prevention Program) • Developed specific education material for our outports. • Reviewed SOP with regards to Birdstrikes. • Jeppesen Airways Manuals Chart 10.7 included wildlife information. • Management decision to introduce PULSELITE.

What happened at our High Risk ports?

17

Lets say the process was slow!!!!! • Firstly, Wildlife management has become a

major component of our regular port audits.

• Some Audit findings requested new bird scare and wildlife management techniques be invoked.

• This brought with it additional challenges.

Cannington Mine, Trepell Aerodrome- High Risk port (6 bird strikes in 6 months) • BHP and Mine management responsive to findings.

• EPO guidelines caused delays.

• New Bird scare equipment sourced.

• Risk Assessment of Gas Cannons caused delays.

• 10 months for Gas Cannons to be commissioned.

What can we do in the future? (Airline)

20

Risk Assessment • Pilots play a big role in managing the risk of birds strikes. • SOP’s, LOFT training to include wildlife hazards Hazard Identification. • AQD reports, Airport Reports and PIREPS Line of Defence • Pilots are usually the last line of defence. • Pilots should check the runway for birds prior to departure Pilot Education • Develop updated educational material that highlights best practices. Operational Procedures • Non punitive go around policy -Threat assessment before takeoff power applied

Page 21: Regional Aviation and Wildlife Hazards - AAWHG · Case study example 2010 18 Cannington Mine, Trepell Aerodrome- High Risk port (6 bird strikes in 6 months) • BHP and Mine management

What can we do in the future? (Airport Operators)

21

Risk Assessment • ARO/ Safety Officers play the biggest role in managing the risk. • Effective identification and management of wildlife is essential. Hazard Identification. • Port Audits, AQD reports and PIREPS Line of defence • Everyone at an airport or mine site plays a role. • ARO/ Safety Officers review and adoption of wildlife management

plan. ARO/ Safety office Education • Develop updated educational material that reinforce best practices. Operational Procedures • Communicate wildlife threat. • Produce a NOTAM • Complete runway inspections prior to every arrival and departure
