4 FARMING WEDNESDAY AUGUST 20 2014 WESTERN DAILY PRESSWDP-E01-S3

BY PHILIP [email protected] often comes slowly toagriculture. When somethinghas been done in a certain wayfor a long time there is usuallya reason – it works. But change is inevitable and

after 106 years on the same sitein Holsworthy, the famous live-stock market holds its finalsale today. From September 3,a whole new era begins, withthe first sale in a new purpose-built market out of town.James Morrish, auctioneer

with Kivells, which has runthe market for many decades, knows that the change won’tpass without some emotion.“Many of our staff and, moreimportantly, many of our cus-tomers have never sold live-stock anywhere else,” he said.“There is going to be somesadness and some tears.”But the plan to move busi-

ness to a new site with modernmore appropriate for agricul-ture in the 21st century hasbeen a long time coming.Without the move there was areal danger the market couldhave been lost alto gether.Mr Morrish said: “E a ch

year we have to apply for al i c e n c e, as any market does, and if the place doesn’t comeup to scratch then – quiterightly – they say you have to

do this, that and the other tomeet health-and-safety andanimal welfare requirements.

“This market is 106 years oldand it has started to feel likethat; we’ve had to tie up someof the pens with string and theroof is rickety. We would eitherhave had to invest a great dealin a site that is not ideal, inthis day and age, or move.”It is a reflection of the im-

portance of a vibrant livestockmarket in the Torridge dis-trict of Devon that TorridgeCouncil, Devon County Coun-cil and Kivells itself have allinvested significantly in thenew market and that farmersand other business have stoodfour-square behind the newdevelopment and intend tomake it a big success. But while all of them will be

Gavel’s down for final time at market

to the pens ring with morethan a century of history; thecanteen, which serves mon-ster fry-ups, endless baconrolls and scalding tea by thebucketful, echoes to millionsof conversations, congratula-tions, arguments and deals, most delivered in an under-stated West Country burr.Hundreds of thousands of

animals have passed through

the market; many millions ofpounds has changed hands asa result of deals done. Badchoices by bidders will havecost businesses dear; cannypurchases help to make goodprofits for those who madethem – as will good sales. The old market is to be re-

developed. Tesco have boughtthe site for a supermarket andhousing. Torridge Council, which owns the site, would nothave been able to invest in thenew market without the saleand Mr Morrish is full ofpraise for their decision toinvest in the new £7 millionmarket site.He said: “For Torridge

Council to have invested sev-eral million in the projectwhen we are all well aware ofthe pressures that local gov-ernment is under is a greatboost for the farming com-m u n i t y.

“I really don’t know of an-other local authority any-where in the UK that would belooking to invest that muchmoney in agriculture. Tor-ridge is one of very few dis-tricts in the country that stillhas agriculture as its biggesteconomic driver. To imagineTorridge not having a live-stock market would have beenunthinkable. That was whatwe were facing, if this planh a d n’t happened.”

looking ahead to the future, today will be full of nostalgiaas farmers who have beencoming to Holsworthy for 50years and more to buy and sellcattle and sheep, meet withtheir colleagues, talk to theirbank and even get their haircut at the on-site barber. The old place is not much to

look at. But it is thick withmemories. The clanking gates

Farmers crowd the ring at Holsworthy market, which closes today after 106 years to move to a new site on the outskirts of the Devon town

vodagroanvodagroanMobile giant Vodafone first in sightsas we launch new campaign to getthe phone coverage our city needs

IT’S been going on for years, but frustration has nowreached boiling point.

When you fork outhundreds of pounds for afancy new mobile phone, andlots more cash over the courseof your contract, the least youshould expect is to be able tomake the odd call.

But for many people tryingto get a signal in Wells hasbeen mission impossible.

It’s not as though we payany less for our phones herethan they do anywhere else.

So this week, we stand up tothe mobile giants and declareenough is enough.

It’s time the people andbusinesses of Wells receivedthe service they pay for.

So Sort our Signal!PAGE 6

But while all of them will be

to the pens ring with morethan a century of history; thecanteen, which serves mon-ster fry-ups, endless baconrolls and scalding tea by thebucketful, echoes to millionsof conversations, congratula-tions, arguments and deals, most delivered in an under-stated West Country burr.Hundreds of thousands of

animals have passed through

the market; many millions ofpounds has changed hands asa result of deals done.
