Preamble

RuTAG IIT Delhi conducted a regional workshop on July 28-29, 2016 at Jawaharlal Nehru

Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Krishinagar, Adhartal, Jabalpur, Madhaya Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh Vigyan Sabha, Gyan Vigyan Parisar Sagonikalan, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh

supported in organising the workshop at Jabalpur. The program was attended by about 139

participants which included Dr. Vijay Singh Tomar, Vice Chancellor, JNKVV, Jabalpur,

Madhaya Pradesh along with 19 staff/faculty members, and 88 students from JNKVV,

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, 2 faculty members and 7 students from Indian Institute of

Information Technology Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh,

and about 26 NGOs.

1. Inauguration Session (Day-1, July 28, 2016, Thursday)

The program started with the welcome address by Prof. S. K. Saha, Head, Department of

Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi and Coordinator, RuTAG IIT Delhi (Fig. 1). He briefly

explained the agenda of the workshop and introduced the mechanism and role of RuTAG

IIT Delhi in technology up-gradation for rural India. He appreciated the efforts of Madhya

Pradesh Vigyan Sabha (MPVS), Bhopal in organising and coordinating the workshop. He

also mentioned the generosity extended by Dr. Vijay Singh Tomar, Vice Chancellor,

JNKVV and Dr. S. K. Rao, Director, Research Services, JNKVV in facilitating and hosting

the workshop.

Further, Mr. Davinder Pal Singh, Project Associate, RuTAG IIT Delhi and workshop

coordinator, invited Mr. S. R. Azad, General Secretary and founding member, MPVS,

Bhopal for his welcome address (Fig. 2).

Mr. Azad mentioned that efforts are needed for bridging the gap between the rural people

and the technological support providers for uplifting the livelihood of small and marginal

farmers. We also need to pinpoint the gap areas.

The program continued with a round of introduction of the participants followed by the

welcome address by the Chief Guest Dr. Dhirendra Khare, Director Instructions, JNKVV,

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh (Fig. 3).

Dr. Khare appreciated the efforts of NGOs in bridging the gap between Govt. Organizations

and tribal population. He mentioned that technological inputs are essential in upgrading rural

sector, and also the result of interventions should be farmers-friendly. He proposed few

problems for consideration such as electronic device for pest and animal control, innovative

design for food grains storage, a device for weeding out crop residue after harvesting to stop

stubble burning in fields, technology for protecting crops from hailstorms, technology for

increasing the shelf-life of vegetables. Dr. Khare mentioned that he is interested in

introducing a course in students curriculum on smart village and needs RuTAG IIT Delhi’s

help in providing information regarding the concept of smart village.

Mr. Ankitesh Shrivastava, Project Associate, RuTAG IIT Delhi, on behalf of RuTAG IIT

Delhi extended a very hearty vote of thanks to all speakers, entire supporting/organizing

team and participating NGOs for taking part in the workshop and sharing their opinion.

2. Technical Session 1

Major S. Chatterjee, Senior Project Consultant of RuTAG IIT Delhi and Scientific

Consultant from the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Vigyan Bhawan (Fig. 4)

explained the objectives and mandate of the RuTAG Programme. He highlighted few

technologies developed at the RuTAG Centres located in seven IITs, e.g., Improved Sanitary

Napkins, Coir rope making machine, Jute rope making machine, Pirn winding machine, Foot

operated Amber charkha, Muri making machine, Sabai grass rope making machine,

Bageshwari charkha, Multi nutrient compressed feed block making for yak, Fish cage,

improved metallurgy of Horse shoe, etc.

In the same session, Prof. S. K. Saha presented several completed and on-going projects of

RuTAG IIT Delhi (Fig. 5). He highlighted few technologies developed under RuTAG IIT

Delhi such as Animal Driven Gear Box, Bullock Driven Tractor (old and new), Treadle

Pump, Solar Pump, De-husking of Minor Millets, Garlic Processing Machines like Graders,

Bulb Breaker, Flaker, Dry Garlic Peel Remover, Fruwash Technology, Tulsi Mala making

Device, Bangles Making Furnace and associated improvements in its tools, seating

arrangement, Micro-hydel testing setup at IIT Delhi, Sheep Hair Shearing Device, etc.

3. Technical Session 2

Major S. Chatterjee conducted technical session 2. Around 12 participants, faculty and

NGOs presented their organisational activities and problems. They are as follows:

3.1. Presentations by Faculty members from JNKVV, Jabalpur and IIITDM, Jabalpur

A tractor attachment which works as a mini harvester developed by an 80

year old farmer in a nearby village.

Needs technical intervention for further improvement.

Specially designed tools for gum extraction needed to save the plant.

may be sent to RuTAG IIT Delhi.

2. RuTAG IIT Delhi would look for experts who can give solutions on tools for

gum extraction.

Robotic seed dispenser made by an M. Tech student at IIITDM, Jabalpur.

Robotic dispenser also dispenses fertilizer along with the seed.

It dispenses at fixed distance and depth which are independent of the speed

of the device.

RuTAG IIT Delhi Remarks

The robot would need further refinement and field testing. Some funding could

be made available from RuTAG IIT Delhi for this purpose if IITDM, Jabalpur is

willing to collaborate.

3.2.1 National Institute of Women Child & Youth Development (NIWCYD), Plot

NIWCYD installed 32 RAM Pumps in Dindori district but tribals were not impressed

with the technology. Therefore, the technology was not scaled up.

118 types of brooms were fabricated in the above said district. A woman

artisan was awarded for making ornamental broom. She has also given

presentations on broom in India and abroad.

Proposed to develop a workshop for a cluster of 10 villages.

Financial help needed for Lantana Furniture Promotion.

Technology needed for Jaggery making.

Technology for briquetting lantana.

Wooden button making machine which can work on the principle of

Tulsimala making device.

Arrangement required so that lantana seed do not fall on the ground as

lantana spreads only through seeds.

Utilization technology for Gajar Ghas.

1. Improved technology for making jaggery is available with Dr. D.

1. Low cost sanitary napkin technology is available with RuTAG IIT Madras.

Training can be arranged by RuTAG IIT Delhi. However, the project cost for

setting up a production centre has to be raised by the organization.

2. Brush cutter: Existing models shall be examined and if there is any scope for cost

and weight reduction, the same would be taken up for development.

RuTAG IIT Delhi Remarks

1. Low cost leather processing technology is already available. A unit set up by

Society for Technology and Development is running in Mandi, Himachal

Pradesh for many years now. If any entrepreneur/NGO is interested to

establish a unit, funds have to be arranged. RuTAG IIT Delhi can facilitate

training and technology transfer.

2. Charcoal making technology is also available. The nature of biomass to be

used needs to be specified. Suitable technology can then be suggested.

3. Small scale oil extraction plant for Jatropha may not be economically viable.

However, some information on commercially available plants. Can be found

through online search.

4. Similarly, technologies for processing of Mentha and Lemon grass are also

available. However, viability at household level may be doubtful. Do online

search.

5. Other items do not conform to the objectives of RuTAG programme.

4.1 Interaction with Students

With great sense of admiration and appreciation Prof. R. K. Nema, Dean College of

Agriculture Engineering (Fig. 9) welcomed Prof. S. K. Saha, Major S. Chatterjee,

Mr. S. R. Azad, Mr. Davinder Pal Singh and Mr. Ankitesh Shrivastava with

bouquets.

Prof. R. K. Nema appreciated the concept of RuTAG for uplifting the rural society and also

cherished the role of IIT Delhi. Further he invited Prof. S. K. Saha for his welcome address

(Fig. 10).

Prof. S. K. Saha welcomed faculty, students from College of Agriculture Engineering,

JNKVV, Jabalpur and IIITDM, Jabalpur. He also welcomed NGOs who joined the second

day of the workshop. Further, he invited Major S. Chatterjee to highlight the concept and

activities of RuTAG in seven IITs.

Major S. Chatterjee (Fig. 11) explained the idea and concept of Dr. R. Chidambaram,

Principal Scientist Advisor to the Government of India in establishing RuTAG in seven IITs.

Program continued with the presentation by Prof. S. K. Saha (Fig. 12) on activities of

RuTAG IIT Delhi and RuTAG Club IIT Delhi. Further, Mr. Vijay Kumar, M. Tech Student

of IIITDM, Jabalpur presented his thesis work on seed dispensing robot.

5. Group Discussion on Identified Problems

This session was chaired by Major S. Chatterjee. The faculty and NGOs presented some new

problems during this session (Fig. 13). These have been added under section 3 of this report.

After listening to all the above problems, Major S. Chatterjee informed the participants that

RuTAG IIT Delhi will analyse all the problems. Selection of the problems will be done

according to the mandate of RuTAG. Selected NGOs will be either requested to come to

RuTAG IIT Delhi or RuTAG team will visit them for detailed discussion on the problem.

6. Concluding Session

Prof. S. K. Saha conducted the concluding session (Fig. 14). He invited Chief Guest

Dr. Vijay Singh Tomar, Vice Chancellor, JNKVV, Jabalpur for his address.

In his address, Dr. Vijay Singh Tomar appreciated the work done by RuTAG IIT Delhi in

uplifting the rural society. He told that at present, JNKVV encompasses five colleges of

Agriculture (Jabalpur, Rewa, Tikamgarh, Ganjbasoda and Waraseoni, Balaghat); one

Agricultural Engineering (Jabalpur); 4 Zonal Agricultural Research Stations (ZARS)

(Jabalpur, Powarkheda, Tikamgarh, Chhindwara); 2 Regional Research Stations (Rewa,

Sagar); Agricultural Research Stations (ARS) (Dindori, Waraseoni, Garhakota, Sausar,

Tendini) and 20 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) (Badgaon, Betul, Chhattarpur, Chhindwara,

Damoh, Dindori, Harda, Jabalpur, Katni, Mandla, Narsinghpur, Panna, Powarkheda, Rewa,

Sagar, Seoni, Shahdol, Sidhi, Tikamgarh, Umaria) representing 6 agroclimatic zones spread

over 25 districts. He mentioned that JNKVV, Jabalapur would like to work in collaboration

with RuTAG IIT Delhi for the rural betterment. He also appreciated the initiative taken by

RuTAG to increase the student involvement in solving and understanding rural problems.
