The AEC Die Clinic provides opportunities for hands-on learning from industry experts who have dealt with the challenges and issues that you face every day. Only the Aluminum Extruders Council can give you the best and most practical training in the aluminum extrusion business.

Learn From Industry Experts! The Die Performance Improvement Clinic combines expert knowledge and experience with hands-on workshops – there is plenty of time to talk one-on-one with industry experts. Pick up valuable tips and techniques from the very best source – your peers.

• Presenter Expertise• Hands-On Workshops

The AEC Die Clinic is a highly interactive educational experience that gives back an invaluable return on investment for member companies.

Seven Hands-On Breakout Sessions! All breakout sessions, both in-depth workshops and hands-on problem-solving stations, are led by members of the AEC Die & Tooling Committee, extruders and die makers alike. These are the experts in die correction, die manufacture, extrusion operation, and related skills. It is the experience of these individuals, given freely, which makes the Die Clinic one of the Council’s most popular events.

Who Should AttendIf you are involved in extrusion die and related operations, new to the job or seasoned professional, you should attend this essential clinic. At the AEC Die Clinic you can brush up on your skills, learn new techniques, and connect with fellow die personnel to “talk shop”. The Die Clinic is particularly appropriate for those newly hired, newly promoted, or ready for a refresher, including:

• Die Makers

• Die Shop Supervisors

• Die Correctors

• Managers

• Press Operators

THE HEART OF THE DIE CLINICBuild Your Knowledge With In-Depth Workshops! The core of the Clinic is a series of four separate in-depth workshops.

THE WORKSHOPS

1 32

Each Workshop focuses on a different set of issues, the kinds of issues facing a Die Corrector every day. Solutions are sought and discussed among the group. These breakouts are the “heart” of the Clinic and are an extremely unique

and valuable learning experience. Participants will rotate in small groups through each of the seven sessions listed below over the course of the Clinic until each group has attended each workshop and problem-solving station.

Extruded Surface Finish - Effect of Die Design, Nitriding, Metal Flow and AlloysThis session reviews the effects of different die design concepts and die surface treatments, such as nitriding, on extrusion finish. Also covered in the workshop is the impact of billet chemistry and metal flow. The causes of various common extrusion defects will be reviewed.

Workshop Presenters: Terry Clarke, Exco, Joe Maier, WEFA and Chris Jowett, Rio Tinto Aluminium.

Evolution of Die Making and the Impact on Die CorrectionThis session will look at the development of die making over the last few decades. The changing levels of sophistication in die making equipment/techniques have changed the capability of extrusion dies, and the extrusions produced from those dies. Extrusion die manufacturing, and use, is moving from an art to a science. This session will take you through those changes and highlight the implication of those changes on the die corrector’s role in the extrusion plant of today. Additionally, the session will cover the impact that these changes have had on the productivity of extrusion presses.

Workshop Leaders: Richard Dickson, Hydro Aluminum Technology Center; Doug Fallin, Thumb Tool & Engineering, division of Gemini Group; Dennis Ebnet, Alexandria Industries

THREE INNOVATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING STATIONSThe Die Clinic features three special “problem-solving” stations that examine real-world die correction problems illustrated through the use of actual dies, extrusion profiles, drawings, photos, and other materials. Each station is manned by a team of die correction experts where attendees, in small groups,

examine and solve actual die correction problems. • Learn what went wrong• Discover how the

problem was corrected• Discuss what other options

might have been used.

Bring your own challenges to the Clinic and get advice on how to solve them!

1) Station A: Flat Bearings and PolishingTeam Leaders: Travis Deming and Rob Behnke, Thumb Tool & Engineering, division of Gemini Group

2) Station B: Multi-Void HollowsTeam Leaders: Rick Hall, MSCED division of Gemini Group; Mark Butterfield and Zack Pence, Magnode Corporation

3) Station C: Metal Flow and CorrectionTeam Leaders: Carl Holderbaum, Aacoa, Div. of Bonnell; Jeff Bourgoine, Mid-States Aluminum

4

External Factors This session explains when “not to correct the die.” It can be more effective and productive to fix the source of the problem or the External Factors. External Factors relate to the press, billet, container, die stack etc., and their thermal management.

Workshop Leaders: Paul Robbins, Castool Tooling Systems; Dan Dunn, Castool Tooling Systems; Pawel Kazanowski, Hydro Aluminum Technology Center

Die Design & Correction for OptimizationThis session takes an in-depth look at die design and die modification to achieve optimum performance:• Die design features that inhibit velocity, and solutions

promoting metal flow and productivity• Die optimization boosting performance of existing

dies • Additionally, the session will take you through in-

depth look at few cases of die rework/modification to maximize performance.

Workshop Leaders: Lester Janus, Sapa Extrusions; Lawrence Robbins, Icicle Consulting, Rick Liscomb, Exco; Bryant Bronner, Lake Park Tool & Machine LLC

BONUS

GENERAL SESSIONTuesday, November 7The Opening General Session provides an overview of the environment the die lives in during extrusion. This is covered in detail during the breakout sessions that follow.

General Session HighlightSafety, Pressure, Metal Flow and Temperature; An overview of the Extrusion Die EnvironmentThis session will consider these factors and examine the effects that changes in this environment can have on die performance. Several of these issues will be covered in much more depth in the later break-out sessions. The presentation will include the AEC safety video on die breakage plus elements of papers presented by the authors at the last three ET conferences.

Richard Dickson, Hydro Aluminum Technology Centre and Chris Jowett, Rio Tinto Aluminium

All participants receive, absolutely free, the following items:

Bonus #1AEC’s Recommended Handling and Maintenance of Extrusion Dies and Tools book. A handy reference guide and training tool for anyone in the field of die correction and maintenance.

Bonus #2Miniature porthole extrusion die manufactured from 6061 extruded rod. The die is a scaled down version of a two-piece, single-hole, four-port structural pipe profile. These miniatures are an excellent training tool for participants to pass on technology learned with their extrusion die repair team back home.

Bonus #3Die Clinic binder for holding handouts and notes used during the sessions. * Breakout Sessions consist of seven

concurrent Workshops and problem-solving stations. Each participant attends each session over the course of the Die Clinic.
