The theme of the 2018 CAPD/ACDP Annual Conference fits so perfectly into the natural setting of Banff, Alberta, which is situated inside Banff National Park. When three workers on the newly built Canadian Pacific Railway discovered a series of hot springs on the side of Sulphur Mountain (our Friday Welcome Reception will take place on top of Sulphur Mountain), the area started to gain international recognition. But it was George Stephen, the President of the CPR, who in 1884 named the area “Banff” after his birthplace in Scotland. Banff National Park was created in 1885 and the Banff Springs Hotel, the site of the CAPD/ACDP Annual Conference sessions, opened in 1888.

Spring has sprung across this great country of ours! With it brings renewed hope for better times to come and for many of us, those pesky seasonal allergies. Having said that I am sure we are all excited about the arrival of the summer season. It has been a busy year so far for the Academy. We face many challenges: re-writing the sedation guidelines across the country, equitable funding for government supported dental programs, etc. A couple of new initiatives we are working on include: the development of a simple caries risk assessment tool for non-dental allied health workers, expanding our global presence by working with the IAPD, and organizing a joint meeting with the AAPD in 2021 in Montreal.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I know you will agree that the key to any organization’s success is the perceived value the members receive from membership in the organization. The hard work of our members that volunteer their precious time to the Academy keeps us strong. Through our representation on CDSA (Canadian Dental Specialties Association), CPS Oral Health Section, RCDC, AAPD, and government, we stay relevant and maintain our national voice.

In support of these efforts CAPD/ACDP currently represents in excess of 90% of pediatric dentists across Canada. We are implementing a new member category this year for general dentists. This will allow general dentists that are interested in taking care of kids to attend our CE and improve their level of care. I would challenge every pediatric dentist to encourage at least one general dentist from their community to join CAPD/ACDP.

Le printemps est enfin arrivé dans ce magnifique pays qu’est le nôtre ! Cette période de l’année annonce le retour des beaux jours, même si, pour plusieurs d’entre nous, elle s’accompagne de ces fichues allergies saisonnières. Cela étant dit, je suis sûr que nous avons tous hâte au début de la saison estivale. L’année a été bien chargée jusqu’à maintenant pour l’Académie. Nous sommes confrontés à de nombreux défis : la refonte à l’échelle du pays des lignes directrices sur la sédation, le financement équitable des programmes dentaires soutenus par le gouvernement, etc. Parmi les nouvelles initiatives auxquelles nous collaborons, mentionnons l’élaboration d’un outil simple d’évaluation des risques de caries pour les auxiliaires médicaux non dentaires et le renforcement de notre présence mondiale en travaillant avec l’AIDP (Association internationale de dentisterie pédiatrique) et en organisant une réunion conjointe avec l’AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) à Montréal en 2021.

Je sais que vous conviendrez que la clé du succès de tout organisme est la perception de la valeur dont bénéficient les membres qui y adhérent. Ce qui constitue la force de notre Académie, c’est le travail assidu de nos membres qui lui consacrent bénévolement de leur temps précieux. Grâce à notre représentation au sein de l’ACSD (Association canadienne des spécialités dentaires), de la section santé buccodentaire de la SCP, du CRCDC, de l’AAPD et du gouvernement, nous demeurons pertinents et maintenons la portée nationale de notre voix.

Fort de cette lancée, l’ACPD/CAPD représente actuellement plus de 90 % des dentistes pédiatriques aux quatre coins du Canada. Cette année, nous avons créé une nouvelle catégorie de membres regroupant les dentistes généralistes. Cela permettra à ceux d’entre eux qui souhaitent traiter des enfants de participer à notre programme d’éducation permanente et d’améliorer leur niveau de soins. Je mettrais au défi chaque dentiste pédiatrique d’encourager au moins un dentiste généraliste de sa communauté à adhérer à l’ACPD/CAPD.

Kevin Donly, D.D.S., M.S. is the President-Elect of the AAPD. He is currently a Professor and Chair in the Department of Developmental Dentistry and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Previous positions include Professor and Associate Director of the Center for Clinical Studies at the University of Iowa, Associate Professor, Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas

Dental Branch at Houston and Associate Professor, The University of Texas Medical School. He received his D.D.S. in 1984, Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 1986, and M.S. in 1986 from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Donly is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He was on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, is the previous Chair of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Council on Post-doctoral Education, is Past-President of the American Society of Dentistry for Children and past Chair of the Public Information Committee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He completed his four year term as the Pediatric Dentistry Commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

David Rothman received his B.A. cum laude from the SUNY at Buffalo and his D.D.S. from NYU College of Dentistry. He completed a GPR at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Anesthesiology Residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and a Pediatric Dentistry Residency at Children’s Hospital/Oakland and the University of California, San Francisco. He was Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency program at UCSF and in 1989 assumed the

Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He went into full time private practice in San Francisco in 1998 and is a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Pediatric Dentistry of Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland.

David is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is a member of the ADA, CDA, ADSA, AAPD and the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. He chaired the Anesthesia and Sedation Subcommittee of the AAPD and served on Committee H of CDEL of the ADA. He is past president of the California Society of Dentistry for Children, the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. Honors include membership in the OKU Delta Delta Chapter, Pierre Fauchard Academy, American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists. He is VP of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and CSPD Foundation and is on CDA Presents and the Committee on Annual Meetings of the ADA. He has served on the boards of the Dental Health Foundation and Support for Families of Children with Disabilities and provided dental care with the international medical group Heart to Heart in Leningrad/St. Petersburg, Russia.

Dr. Rothman has been published in the journals of the California Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Society of Dentistry for Children, ADSA Pulse as well as various component newsletters. He lectures nationally and internationally to dental and medical groups in the areas of pediatric dentistry, behavior management, sedation, anesthesia and hospital dentistry.

Dr. Dennis Paul Nutter, “Behavior Management is managing pain during procedures: It’s time to establish a uniform method of procedure pain assessment in pediatric dentistry”. Friday, September 14, 10:30 to 12:00

Dr. Nutter is a board certified pediatric dentist who received his dental degree from the University of Southern California. He is the author of a series of journal articles, cited in AAPD guidelines that reviewed the neurobiologic, iatrogenic and target considerations relating to good, clinical pain practice for pediatric procedure pain. His research focus is on the behavior

assessment practices of pediatric dentists. Dr. Nutter has lectured to national audiences at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the California Society of Pediatric Dentists on pain assessment, pain measurement and pain justification. He is a frequent lecturer to pediatric residents and general practice residents at California dental schools, and the U.S. Veterans Administration. He has served as an expert witness for multiple plaintiffs claiming abusive use of restraints by corporate entities. Dr. Nutter is a Trustee of the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and a Past President of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. He lives in Vacaville, California with his wife Marcia and his BMW 1200 RT touring motorcycle. His son Travis lives in NorthWest Arkansas.

Course Description: Establishing a valid method of pain assessment for pediatric dental procedure pain. 1) Pain Basics. 2) Description of the Assessment Problem: Pediatric Dentists have been using two contradictory methods to assess pediatric procedure pain. 3) What is wrong about the Authoritarian method of pediatric procedure pain assessment. 4) What is right about accepting the pain report of the child when there is evidence of tissue trauma.

Alan S. Rudakoff, Q.C., “Loss Prevention – Avoiding Malpractice Claims and Discipline Complaints” Friday, September 14, 14:00 to 15:00

Alan Rudakoff has practised civil litigation since graduating from law school in 1982. The first 35 years of his career were spent at the Macleod Dixon/Norton Rose Fulbright law firm. In December 2016 he moved his practice to Scott Venturo Rudakoff LLP, which was a better fit for his clients and his practice. Alan has appeared as counsel in the Provincial Court of Alberta (Civil and Criminal Divisions), Court of Queen’s Bench, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He has extensive experience in alternate dispute resolution proceedings and has acted as a mediator in the successful resolution of insurance claims.

Mr. Rudakoff’s practice is principally in the tort/liability defence and insurance fields with an emphasis on the defence of sophisticated, complex commercial claims, including product liability, commercial liability, fire/explosion, energy, aviation, professional negligence, and serious personal injury/wrongful death. He regularly acts for a diverse group of international insurers and multinational manufacturers and have wide experience handling all manner of liability, property and casualty claims.

Mr. Rudakoff has also acted as a professional sports agent, certified by the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA), representing players in their dealings and negotiations with professional sports teams.

Warren Yunker (pictured Left) is currently Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatric Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, Department of Surgery, Cumming School Of Medicine, Alberta Children’s Hospital/University of Calgary, Calgary, AB. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Honours Environmental Biology from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and then earned his MD at the same University, before graduating with a PhD in Cell Biology and Physiology.

His residency and fellowship training has been in Otolaryngology at the University of Calgary and then Paediatric Otolaryngology at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston, Texas, USA.

Barry Hoffman (pictured Right) grew up in Detroit, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan for undergraduate studies and Dental School. His specialty training in Orthodontics was at the University of Minnesota, culminating in a Clinical Certificate in Orthodontics and Masters of Science degree in Anatomy. His research described the Craniofacial pattern of families of patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Dr. Hoffman has been in clinical practice in Calgary since 1977. He was a founder of the Calgary alumni component of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity in Calgary, served on the Board of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontics, and is currently a clinical instructor at the University of Alberta Graduate Orthodontic Program. Dr. Hoffman lectures internationally on the topic of Computer Assisted Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) of orthodontic brackets. His interest in airway diagnosis, the relationship of predominant oral breathing, and development of the facial complex has been an integral part of his practice.

The Award of Merit recognizes an individual who has served in an outstanding capacity in the governing or service of the Canadian Dental Association over a sustained period of time, or who has made similar outstanding contributions to the dental profession, the dental community or the oral health of Canadians and/or society at large. Presented by Dr. Alexander Mutchmor, the Vice President at the time, and currently the CDA President-Elect.

Dr. Anil Joshi is a pediatric dentist who has given unselfishly to his profession and to his community. He is a past president of the New Brunswick Dental Society, and was instrumental in developing the New Brunswick Dental Society’s submission to government on dental coverage for children of low income families.

He has served the larger community by working with Moncton Headstart in providing both professional and educational assistance without remuneration. In addition, he has worked with children brought to Canada affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. He has also travelled extensively internationally to provide pro bono treatment to families in need.

At the CDA level, he has been a strong contributor to CDA’s Working Group on Access to Care for Children and Seniors, and has been proactive in promoting throughout New Brunswick the importance of good oral health at any age.

In short, he is an exemplary professional who has given willingly and unselfishly of his knowledge and expertise to serve his profession and his community in ways that can truly make a difference.

It is my distinct pleasure to present Dr. Anil Joshi with the CDA Award of Merit.

Dr. Ross Anderson has had a distinguished career in pediatric dentistry for almost 40 years. He is a committed clinician, educator and administrator.

He is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a DDS, a diploma in Paedodontics and a Master of Science Degree. He has served as Chief of Dentistry at the IWK Hospital in Halifax since 1991, and as Assistant Professor and Head of Pediatric Dentistry at Dalhousie University since 1998. While there, he was instrumental in creating the first general practice residency in pediatric dentistry at Dalhousie University.

His presentations, publications, research initiatives and academic activities are voluminous and reflect a lifetime career in the field of dental education, and in advocating for the oral health of young children.

He is an active participant in CDA’s Access to Care Working Group. He developed the content for CDA’s First Visit Continuing Education Course, aimed at dentists and other oral health care providers. This course has been given to over 2,000 oral health care providers across this country. It reflects his commitment to his profession and to the oral health of young Canadians, and acts as a reminder to his colleagues of the importance of engaging parents in the oral health care needs of their children, at an early age.

In addition, Dr. Anderson is CDA’s representative to the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada and its Health Facilities/Dental Residencies Committee, and is a frequent site surveyor for CDAC. Dr. Anderson has served as President of the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and is currently its Executive Director. He was vice-chair of the CDA Committee on Specialist Affairs and a member of CDA’s Committee on Community and Institutional Dentistry and its Sub-Committee on Hospital Dentistry.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the dental profession and to the oral health of the youngest members of our society, it is my distinct pleasure to present Dr. Ross Anderson with CDA’s Distinguished Service Award.

It is said that the quality of our society will be judged by the manner in which we treat our most vulnerable citizens. If this is the case, then the dental profession is fortunate indeed to have Dr. Clive Friedman within its ranks.

Dr. Clive Friedman is a pediatric dentist who has devoted his career to improving the lives of children and those with special needs. His other interests include behavioral facilitation, family violence, caries management, motivational interviewing, and functional oral health.

He was educated in South Africa and obtained his specialty training at Louisiana State University. He was a member of CDA’s Committee on Clinical and Scientific Affairs for close to a decade, CDA’s Sub-Committee on Hospital Dentistry and its Committee on Community and Institutional Dentistry. He also served on the CDA-ACFD Special Care in Dentistry Working Group, CDA’s National Seniors Task Force and he chaired CDA’s National Task Force on Early Childhood Caries. Closer to home, he served on the ODA’s Special Needs Task Force and has taught for many years at Western University and the University of Toronto.

Internationally he has served on the Education Committee of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health, and on the Advisory Board for a rare bone disorder called FOP, and has presented at numerous conferences. He is Associate Editor of the British Journal of Disability and Oral Health and has served as a consultant to the Special Olympics.

It is said that actions speak louder than words. His actions attest to a caring, compassionate and dedicated man who has devoted his career to helping those in need. This includes participating in volunteer missions to the Honduras and Mexico.

He is someone who will go to great lengths to build a rapport with his young patients, including, among other things, wearing different colored shoes in the clinic.

His work has provided much needed attention to the area of special needs patients and to those who are most vulnerable, and for this, the profession and society are its grateful beneficiaries.

I am delighted to present Dr. Clive Friedman with the CDA Distinguished Service Award.

CAPD/ACDP’s New Membership Categories come into effect on July 1, 2018. Additions to

the By-Laws will be voted on by the membership at the AGM on September 14th. We look

forward to extending our educational outreach to members of the dental community at large.

Joint Membership in CAPD/ACDP and the AAPD

Most members of the Academy enjoy Joint membership—a special-priced category that includes all the benefits offered by CAPD/ACDP and the AAPD. Joint membership is available to members who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents and whose primary practice is located in Canada.

GETTING TO BETTER KNOW THE MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY

Why did you choose to specialize in pediatric dentistry?

My parents were comfortable financially but not wealthy. My father had just retired as a Flight Lieutenant from an extensive career in the Royal Canadian Air Force with his last posting in Winnipeg.

I applied and was accepted into dentistry at the University of Manitoba and joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in the Dental Officers Training Plan (DOTP). This plan paid for all my university expenses, books, tuition etc. which was a tremendous relief for my parents, as they did not have the financial resources to fund my education.

Unfortunately my father, who was very proud of the fact that I had joined the military in addition to my acceptance into dentistry, died of a brain aneurysm during my second year of dentistry. I often reflect back upon his premature death in his early 50s with sadness as he never got to see any of my future exciting and challenging career.

I graduated with my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree with the rank of Captain. I served the CAF in the Canadian Forces Dental Service now renamed the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. I owed the CAF 5 years of service for paying for all my education.

My first posting was at Canadian Forces Base Cornwallis Nova Scotia, where I was tasked to establish a Children’s dental clinic for military personnel.

This experience sparked my interest in pediatric dentistry.

However I felt that my undergraduate training was inadequate as I lacked the skills to provide comprehensive care to pediatric patients especially the medically and behaviourally compromised, very young children ages 1 to 3, and children with special needs.

My second posting was at the Canadian Forces Dental Services School (CFDSS) CFB Borden. During this time at the CFDSS I had the privilege of working for Lieutenant Colonel Harold Brogan who was a demanding, fair and amazing mentor. During this time he sent me on courses at the CAF School of Instructional Technique, and the CAF Staff and Administrative School. These courses gave me both the confidence and skills that would prove to be invaluable in my later career.

Col.Brogan also sent me on the Special Forces Canadian Airborne Regiment parachute training courses where I qualified in rappelling and as a combat parachutist in the CAF.

I had the honour and privilege as a young dental officer, to train with some of Canada’s finest dedicated combat soldiers and elite Special Forces personnel in the Canadian Army. This interaction in the past is one of the many reasons why I feel passionately and have such respect for the courage of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the CAF.

I was promoted to the rank of Major and was selected to do a residency in Pediatric Dentistry thanks to the recommendation of Lieut. Col. Brogan with full support of the then Director General of Dental Services, Brigadier General Craigie, another remarkable officer that I had the benefit to serve with in the CAF.

In 2000 I relocated my office into a larger and more modern facility. I also established at the time one of the few accredited in-office surgical centres for general anesthesia for children in Canada utilizing the skills of Board Certified Medical Anesthesiologists.

I believe passionately in ecology and protecting the earth’s environment. I based the entire new office theme on ecology. When one enters the reception and waiting areas an undersea theme greets you with artwork of Killer and Blue whales on the wall, a recessed curved room with dolphins swimming, a six foot aquarium is built into the wall, sea turtles and sharks are swimming on the ceiling and a large curved desk with calming lights that change colour and mimic cascading water. A Sega machine further distracts the children.

The clinic is based on a jungle theme with the lion room, the elephant room and an open concept treatment area with gorillas on the wall, tigers and giraffes. All the artwork in both the reception and clinical areas is original and hand painted. The windows wrap around the entire treatment area and are like an IMAX theatre that is ever-changing for the children. I hired a brilliant interior designer Ms. D. Blagden who brought my ideas and vision to fruition.

The prime reasons for this design are to make children feel at ease in the dental setting and hopefully to imprint into the minds of parents and children, the importance of saving our planet for future generations. I will never forget one of the greatest compliments that I ever received and it was from a 10-year-old Special Needs child in my practice. She turned to me and said, “Dr. Morley I love your super neat office with all the fish and jungle animals that we need to look after and I really like you because you always called me your bud”.

In my opinion, pediatric dentists in private practice should be able to provide comprehensive care to children that include the very young child, those with special needs, and the behaviourally and/ or medically challenged child.

After graduation from my pediatric dental residency I was again posted to CFB Borden to the CFDSS. During my tenure at the “school”, I had the opportunity to travel throughout Canada, to the USA and at that time to West Germany, to give presentations on pediatric dentistry.

I was also sent on temporary duty to the then Soviet Union, a challenging and enlightening experience, which allowed me to witness firsthand the pathetic system of Marxism.

I was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed as the Chief Instructor (Assistant Dean equivalent) at the CFDSS. The position had many challenges that augmented my administrative skills. I was honourably discharged from the CAF with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1984. I then established a pediatric dental practice in Barrie, Ontario where I obtained admitting privileges for my pediatric dental patients at both the Royal Victoria Hospital Regional Health Centre and Stevenson Memorial Hospitals.

What do you find most challenging?

In my opinion, the stress has definitively increased in the healing professions whether medicine or dentistry due to increased demands by parents, constant encroachment and restrictive government regulations, the threat of litigation, the internet, the more restrictive paradigm shifts that have taken place in how we can treat children but to name a few.

What is the most misunderstood aspect about Pediatric

Dentistry?

The lack of knowledge in society about the devastating effects of Early Childhood/Childhood Caries or dental disease on children’s’ health, academic performance, interference with sleep, chronic and acute pain, and overall well-being!

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I feel so very privileged to provide comprehensive dental care to relieve pain and suffering for children affected by the devastation of dental disease which includes those with special needs, the medically and behaviourally comprised and very young children.

In order to complete this mandate, the pediatric dentist should be able to utilize and/or have access to all treatment modalities approved and recognized by their respective provincial licencing bodies. This should include current behaviour modification techniques, as well as access to sedation and general anesthesia.

I also have been most fortunate to have Dr. Michal Goralski, Pediatric Dentist and a Past President of CAPD/ACDP join me in the practice where I now work as an associate. His presence will allow the practice to continue to provide essential care for children for years to come, long after I retire.

I continue to give presentations to impart some of the knowledge gained through my many years of practicing Pediatric Dentistry, as well as practice management, thanks to the additional knowledge gained in the Kellogg EMBA course. The presentations are given both nationally, in the USA and Internationally, which I enjoy immensely.

Looking at a crystal ball, what innovations in the profession do you foresee (or dream about) in the

years ahead?

I hope to see a day when the devastation of the most prevalent disease in the world, early childhood /childhood caries, can be decreased or eliminated for children through future research and prevention.

As you seem to lead a fairly busy life, what do you do to relax and unwind?

I am blessed to have 3 children, two grandchildren, and an amazing spouse. They all continue to challenge, revitalize

and refresh me and put life into a pragmatic perspective.

I also try to stay fit through exercise, skiing, golf, biking, or canoeing. I love to travel and just recently returned from a

3-week adventure to South Africa.

I also must confess that I enjoy sipping a glass of vintage red wine (on occasion of course) with a good book in hand

or sharing life experiences with great friends.

Why did you choose to specialize in pediatric dentistry?

I chose Pediatric Dentistry because I really enjoyed being with children and liked providing

comprehensive dentistry care. Pediatric Dentistry allows me to do both!

As the President-Elect of the AAPD what you would like to accomplish?

My Mission is the same as the mission of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry which is to advocate policies, guidelines, and programs that promote optimal oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. As President of AAPD I would like to promote that all children establish a Dental Home by their first birthday and achieve/maintain ideal oral health through preventive and comprehensive dental care.

What has been your experience in working with the CAPD/ACDP over the years?

I have had the privilege of being friends with a number of members of the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, many of which are also members of AAPD. I have spoken at several CAPD/ACDP Annual Conferences and have always enjoyed this interaction. I have experienced meetings in Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary, all beautiful cities! I am looking forward to my first visit to Banff!

What do you feel is the most misunderstood aspect about Pediatric Dentistry? What is the solution to ‘fix’

this?

In my opinion, I do not think that the general public understands our passion to have children live a life with ideal oral health. We make great efforts to see that preventive dentistry is promoted so that children and their parents have a positive attitude about oral health.

Board of Trustees and the Executive Offices of the American Society of Dentistry for Children, which merged with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in 2002.

Board of Trustees of Healthy Smiles-Healthy Children, the foundation of AAPD. Board of Trustees and now the Executive Offices of AAPD.

Pediatric Dentistry Commissioner and Chair of the Documentation and Policy Committee of the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

In general, why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because I enjoy working with others that have the desire to make improvements that will enhance education

and ultimately the oral health of children.

What is your message to Pediatric Dentists (Students, Graduates, Active in the Profession) about the value

of volunteering (the value to the individual; the value to the profession)?

I would encourage students and graduated pediatric dentists to become involved in their profession through

volunteering. They will find that it provides immense satisfaction, as well as the development of friendships that will last

a lifetime.

Looking at a crystal ball, what innovations in the profession do you foresee (or

dream about) in the years ahead?

I see a very bright future to the profession! I believe preventive dentistry efforts will

improve greatly, through professional organization efforts and governmental programs. I

believe we will see much more emphasis on early interventions with remineralizing and

antibacterial agents. I think we will see bioactive/biocompative restorative materials that

will mimic tooth structure, from esthetics to remineralization at restoration margins.

As you seem to lead a fairly busy life, what do you do to relax and unwind?

I am pretty busy with my work, but I do find time to enjoy watching my youngest son’s

competitive soccer games and traveling with my three sons. And, of course, I visit my

pediatric dentistry friends in Barrie every summer to play golf!

Early Diagnosis and Minimally Invasive Restorative Care for Children with Dr. Kevin Donly

Course Description:

This course will discuss the early diagnosis of tooth demineralization, focusing on the use of quantitative light fluorescence (QLF). Intervention with fluoride (including fluoride varnish), silver diamine fluoride, glass ionomer surface protectants, sealants and minimally invasive products and procedures will be presented. Risk assessment utilization in decision-making for restorative care will be discussed and related to recommendations made by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for restorative dentistry care in children.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, participants will: • be exposed to early diagnosis of enamel demineralization and understand preventive regimens available, as well as appropriate intervention with these agents, using minimally invasive techniques. • have an understanding of the clinical utilization of traditional, photopolymerized glass ionomer cements and compomers, including indications and contraindications. • be exposed to the newer commercially available resin-based composites and dentin bonding resins, understand their mechanism of action and visualize clinical utilization of these materials. • understand pediatric dentistry standards of care using risk assessment in decision­ making.

3 The Dr. Keith Titley Pediatric Dentistry Graduate Training Scholarship was established to support advanced training in the area of Research and Fellowship in Pediatric Dentistry in Canada. Why did you choose to specialize in pediatric dentistry?

When I first graduated in dentistry, I spent a year doing fly-in care for First Nations folks in Northern Ontario followed by two years treating residents in a facility for developmentally delayed children and adults. I discovered that I had some innate skills in working with kids and decided I wanted to have the chance to work with patients with a clean slate on which to build the foundations of a lifetime of good oral health.

Where did you do your training?

I received my B.Sc. and D.D.S. from the University of Toronto followed by my M.S. in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan, graduating there in 1980.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I love the multitude of options that a health care professional has throughout their career. In clinical care, I love taking a child with his or her unique set of elements and challenges, and working with them, helping them grow their knowledge and work through any difficulties they have. To see their growth and ultimate pleasure in coming in to see our team is fabulous.

What do you find most challenging?

Probably coming to the realization that there is so much in my care for which I don’t have all the answers. Challenge is opportunity. I only wish I had a whole lot more energy to fill in some of the missing pieces in care while balancing with life.

What is the most misunderstood aspect about Pediatric Dentistry?

Depends who you ask!

Dentists currently too often think care for pre-cooperative young patients is about putting them to sleep, missing the holistic benefits of managing disease risk while growing patient trust.

The public too often thinks it is about filling teeth and miss the growing knowledge base of an evolving specialty.

Industry Involvement. You volunteered to be the Chair of the CAPD/ACDP Ottawa Annual Conference in 2019.

In general, why do you volunteer?

Easiest answer is that it is fun. I learn a great deal about myself and my profession, I get to work with some amazing people, and if I am lucky, I get to make a difference.

Are you involved in other volunteer positions other than those with CAPD/ACDP?

There isn’t a lot of dust gathering under me currently. I am on the RCDSO working group updating the Ontario Standards on sedation and anesthesia. I am also finishing off several committee positions with the Ontario Dental Association including as consulting editor for YOH.ca, a patient information magazine. Locally, I currently chair a committee for my community association. One of my greatest joys has also been my international volunteering on a medical-dental team with Speroway working in the developing world.

Why is Ottawa a great location for the Annual Conference? Any changes,

revelations, surprises that you can reveal at this stage?

I love this city and what it is becoming. It is so much more than a “government town”, with great cultural venues, connection with wonderful natural areas and great restaurants. Add to that the institutions like the National Gallery and museums, it is a great city to bring the entire family.

Our local team includes some new leaders ready to take charge. It is pulling together an exciting scientific program as well as neat stuff for the family. While still in the early stages, our planned theme is currently called:

“Pediatric Dentistry: Changing Trends and New Paradigms”

We hope to challenge you with some controversies as well as leading edge information. Like our colleagues on the Banff team, we also like the idea of a pre-

meeting course and are working on that now.

What is your message to Pediatric Dentists (Students, Graduates, Active in

the Profession) about the value of volunteering (the value to the individual;

the value to the profession)?

Simple answer is get involved. Stretch yourself. You will never regret it, and you will find out a few interesting things about yourself.

Looking at a crystal ball, what innovations in the profession do you foresee (or dream about) in the years ahead?

This is one of the reasons I wish I was 20 years younger. The future is going to be both challenging and full of really exciting stuff. I predict our profession will move in the direction of greater collaboration with other health care professions, we will continue to face challenges from outside of the profession, our new graduates will need to spend additional time in education, probably in a 5th year residency, and the scientific advances will only accelerate on many fronts.

As you seem to lead a fairly busy life, what do you do to relax and unwind?

Red usually works better for me than white! I try to keep fit but face the challenges of an aging body. I love reading, both

fiction and non-fiction, dabbling in a bit of photography, and am constantly trying to make my gardens grow.

It shall have the power to establish rules and regulations consistent with these Bylaws and to establish ad-interim policies and guidelines between Annual General Meetings when such policies and guidelines are necessary for the management of the Academy provided that all policies are presented to the General Assembly for ratification at the next Annual General Meeting of the Academy.
