Thursday, October 22, 2009

Presentation Summary:The lecture will present a collection ofevents and situations which illustratecommunication problems and solutions inthe technical world. Examples will aboundfrom the lecturer landing in NorthAmerica 37 years ago to studygeotechnical engineering while notspeaking English, to the lack ofcommunications between professors andpractitioners today. Case histories such asthe Washington Monument, theWoodrow Wilson Bridge, and the WorldWar II Cliffs of Normandy willdemonstrate these ideas. The goal of thelecture is to share experiences fromwhich the lecturer has learned and willbe sprinkled with humor and aphilosophical outlook!

Outstanding Project Award

Case Foundation Company

The Trump International Tower andHotel, Chicago, IL

Case Foundation Company will bepresented with the 2009 DFI OutstandingProject Award.A brief presentation on thehighlights of the unique challenges faced bythis project and the innovations used tocomplete it will be given during thebanquet following the award presentation.

Project Summary:

Built on the site formerly occupied by theChicago Sun-Times Building, which wasconstructed in the 1950s on large hand dug-belled caissons,The Trump Tower projectarchitect/engineer Skidmore, Owings andMerrill had to design the 92 story building byconcentrating the building loads into as fewelements as possible to minimize conflictwith the old caissons. The final design calledfor 57 rock caissons, 4 ft. to 10 ft. diameter, with most of the load carried by twenty-two10 ft. shafts supporting the core. Designcapacity for each of these rock caissons is39,000 kips, believed to be the highestcapacity single foundation elements in theU.S. The challenge for contractor CaseFoundation Company was completing thelarge diameter caissons with deep rocksockets on a small site within the specifiedtime frame. To do so, percussion tools weredesigned and built for drilling the socketswith small-diameter downhole hammershoused in canisters of varying diameters. The 10-foot rock caissons required threeruns of these “cluster drills” to cut thecomplete socket. The hammer drills reducedthe limestone to sand and small gravel-sizedfragments which were excavated from thecutting face by direct air circulation. Thismethod brought Chicago’s largest caissonproject in 30 days ahead of schedule andunder budget.
