I am delighted to invite you to the 17th Biennial Conference of the New Zealand Society of Actuaries.

The theme of the conference is ‘Sound Navigation – Uncharted Waters’ and my hope is that you will indeed join your colleagues and set sail on this journey, broaden your knowledge base and further enhance your professional development.

New Zealand is indeed moving into uncharted waters as we are driven by the strong currents of fiscal and regulative change with the Prudential Regulation of Insurers well advanced, the establishment of a Financial Markets Authority and the emergence of Enterprise Risk Management as a significant discipline for actuaries to embrace.

The Organising Committee has put together an excellent programme, generating a nice balance between technical papers and highly relevant external speakers.

We are a relatively small profession in New Zealand, and overseas attendees enjoy the comparative informality and camaraderie engendered at our conference. This is a great opportunity to freely interact with your fellow professionals, both from within New Zealand and from overseas.

Blenheim has been carefully selected for our conference venue for its sunshine, its serenity, its sweet potato and sauvignon (amongst others). It is centrally located and is ideal as a stepping stone for many of the tourism activities in the hinterland and further afield.

I look forward to an enlightening and energising few days and sincerely hope that you can ‘come aboard’.

Pressing the Right ButtonsEver wondered why you instantly ‘click’ with some people you work with yet there are some who can rub you up the wrong way – sometimes before they even open their mouth!

We wish we could straighten out all those people – those very same people who want to straighten us out!

Regardless of where we work the common thread is that we all deal with people. Business transformation occurs when we understand, respect and celebrate each others’ differences. By understanding what motivates us, we find greater significance in who we are, meaning in our workplace, resulting in greater productivity.

Allison Mooney an international award winning humorous speaker will show us how to use the 4 Critical keys of influence effectively
