W O R K S H O P S cont’dTHE ABCs OF EMPLOYMENT Looking for work? This interactive workshop will encourage you to assess your skills, interests and networks. Together we can evaluate what you need to thrive in today’s changing economy.

TURNING NEGATIVE INTO POSITIVE BEHAVIOR Research shows that punishments really do not teach children better behavior. The Institute for Understanding Behavior team and the Center for Popular Democracy will teach strategies that support positive behavior in school and at home.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR YOUR CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Learn about your children’s educational rights, the IEP process, and supports available to you. Advocates for Children will lead this discussion around discipline issues, suspensions, alternative instruction and more.

GIVING VOICE TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS Learn the importance of communication skills in your ELL child’s education. Participants will engage in activities that help children build confidence in their first, second, or third language.

SAVING FOR COLLEGE What can parents do to save money for higher education? Learn about Education IRAs and 529 plans, grants, scholarships and other financial aid sources available to your child.

CPR BASICS: HOW TO HELP IN AN EMERGENCY Certified trainers will teach you the basics of CPR with a focus on helping children with asthma. Please note: You will not receive CPR certification from this session but will receive information on how to become certified.

Learn which HS diploma gets your student in, different college options, admissions, financial aid, affordable remedial services and how the ACCES VR and the Office of Students with Disabilities can help.

SOCIAL MEDIA — TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO USE IT RESPONSIBLY Learn what you can do to make your child’s online experiences safer and what to do in the event of sexting or bullying online. Help your child become a responsible digital citizen.

SELECTING THE RIGHT HIGH SCHOOL A UFT guidance counselor will share how parents can support their children through the process of choosing the right high school. Learn what to look for during a school visit, and what schools are looking for in their applicants.

KIDS, DRUGS, AND BOOZE: WHAT TO DO? Parents will be armed with information to more effectively address the problem of children who use alcohol or drugs. They will learn where to find resources to get assistance with this difficult issue. Presented by Phoenix House.

HOW BOYS LEARN There are real differences in how boys learn, and in what they need to succeed. Learn how we can support boys’ learning with practical strategies to nurture them at home and in school.

SUCCEEDING IN HIGH SCHOOL Transitioning to high school can be tough. Learn tips to help your high schooler get off to a good start. Find out about the high school environment, requirements for promotion, graduation and opportunities high schools can offer.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR PARENTS Effective communication is essential for every parent, including those on school leadership teams, parent associations, or other leadership positions. In this workshop, you will gain a better understanding of effective communication and will practice techniques to make you a more effective leader.

TAKE A STAND! STOP BULLYING BEHAVIORS IN OUR SCHOOLS Every child has the right to a safe and secure learning environment. This workshop will teach you how to identify bullying and provide effective strategies to confront bullying behavior.

HOW TO HELP THE RELUCTANT MIDDLE SCHOOL READER Reading expectations are higher than ever, but some kids just haven’t experienced joy from reading. This workshop will provide practical strategies to help your middle schooler find materials that are engaging and activities that build competence and confidence as a reader.

SUPPORTING THE DIFFERENTLY-ABLED CHILD Not all children learn the same way. Some children need to touch it, hear it or feel it to learn. Identify your child’s learning style and learn strategies to support learning at home.
