Workshop Descriptions Friday, April 27 8:30-4:15 (6 hour sessions) 1) Teaching the Art of Training “Design Skills” Module II Vicki Hawley In this training we will focus on the skills and knowledge needed to actually develop training experiences. You are following a design that in many ways models the information that you are teaching. Participants will therefore engage with one another and with the materials on multiple levels. You will be provided with many teachable moments and opportunities to reflect the process while completing a Personal Training Plan throughout the course. 2) Effective Practices in School Age Care for Trainers Nancy Dougherty This workshop is designed to encourage trainers to incorporate into their trainings the information providers need as a foundation to improve their program. The workshop covers these foundational pieces: child development theories; standards; environments; human relationships; developmentally appropriate practice; and positive behavior guidance. Trainers share ideas on how to include this information in new and existing workshops. This session is highly recommended for MnSACA Certified Trainers and those trainers that plan to apply for the MnSACA SAC TOT in the future. 8:30-10:00 (1.5 hour sessions) 3) Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential Advisor Training Claudia Freund With the state of Minnesota’s emphasis to improve quality care for children by increasing the number of child care providers who receive a CDA credential the need for CDA Advisors has increased. In this session you will learn the role of the CDA Advisor. This session is open to current CDA Advisors that might want a refresher as there are NEW Professional Resource File Requirements for the CDA Candidate. 4) Self Care for the Caregiver – Creating Balance In Order to Avoid Burnout Sue Baldwin Leaders, trainers, and directors are role models. It is very easy to over extend ourselves, as we put others need’s first. This workshop will look at what happens when we do not take care of ourselves and how to make constructive changes; evaluating our priorities; learning how to set boundaries with others; and creating balance in a hectic world. 5) Using Training Aids to Design Memory-Friendly Training Cindy Croft Participants will learn how to effectively use training aids—humor, props, handouts, transparencies and PowerPoint slides—during presentations to facilitate storage, retention, and retrieval of new information. How attention helps transfer information into ‘working memory’ will be explored. Take-home checklists to assist in developing memory-friendly, appealing training materials will be provided.

Join Minnesota Early Childhood and School Age Trainers Association (MECSATA) today and receive 10% off the cost of this conference!

Plus enjoy 10% discounts at Redleaf Press and 10% off any MECSATA sponsored trainings. Check out www.mecsata.org for

Workshop Descriptions 6) Games People Play Paulette Pelletier Learning is equal to the amount of fun you’re having. Come and play with Paulette Pelletier and explore presentation games to open or close your session, make key points and turn your “ho-hum” presentation into one with pizzazz! 7) Intentional Internal Evaluation of School Age Programs Sue Estabrook-Anderson This interactive workshop will include basic information that will guide and assist new program managers in the development of internal evaluation systems that support quality school age care programming. Attendees will learn and share evaluation methods that include systems for the evaluation of program, staff and professional development. 1:00-2:30 (1.5 hour sessions) 8) Smart Trainers Finish Rich Elaine Greer Let's talk about money! We will explore what we need to do as small business owners to insure our stable financial future. We will examine "Ten Steps of Wisdom" the trainer has compiled in laymen’s terms to get you on the right track. Let's be smart enough to start in small ways in building our nest egg now so we can indeed finish our lives rich. 9) Training Early Childhood and School Age Professionals to be Agents of Change Vicki Thrasher-Cronin & Megan Waltz There is great potential for change during the current legislative session. Ready 4 K will cover current events at the legislature relating to kids, families, and school readiness, and will give trainers information and tools to impact the early childhood workforce as agents of change. 10) Online Learning – Quality Management Training With Your Feet Up Karen Foster Jorgensen & Grady Appleton Are time and distance keeping you from quality management training you need? Put your feet up, relax and learn through Eager to Learn online management training and directors networking for early childhood leaders. Join colleagues as center directors and early childhood trainers learn about online courses and director’s networking groups designed specifically to meet the challenges of 21st century early childhood businesses.

Workshop Descriptions 1:00-4:15 (3 hour sessions) 11) Compassion Fatigue, Helpers and Shattered Dreams Ted Bowman In this session, the interplay of loss of dreams, resiliency, and hope will be presented, discussed, demonstrated and practiced. Promotion of resiliency requires hope. Yet, resiliency and hope can not be effectively fostered by depleted helpers. Hence, perspectives and tools useful in working with losses will be linked to helpers and their resiliency and hope. 12) Shameless Self-Promotion: The Art of Marketing Yourself Charles “Scott” Wachter What you have to “sell” to others may be the best thing since sliced bread, but how do you get others to realize it? Marketing is a toll to promote your products and services to others. This class will take you through all the aspects of marketing and how you can apply marketing to your own situation to promote yourself, your business, or your organization. 2:45-4:15 (1.5 hour sessions) 13) Minnesota Professional Development System Update Catharine Cuddeback Come hear an up-to-the minute update about and provide input and feedback for the progress and process itself of the development of the MN Child Care Professional Development system. 14) Rules, Rules and More Rules, Hidden Rules Ann Dillard It’s not written, neither is it spoken. It is called Hidden Rules. In this workshop we will explore reasons why people think and act a certain way and why it is important to understand some of the different cultural habits, behaviors and practices that people from different socioeconomic classes bring. 15) Providing Strategies, Recommendations, and Developing Useful Individual Program Plans Priscilla Weigel & Lois Vogt An Individual Program Plan (IPP) can be a useful tool when consulting with childcare providers. During this workshop, participants will learn what an IPP is and how to develop a useful plan, and have an opportunity to create a plan. The presenters will also share their most successful strategies used during their consultations in the community.

Workshop Descriptions Saturday, April 28 9:45-11:15 (1.5 hour sessions) 16) Serving Biracial and Multiethnic Children and Their Families Judy Lindman Increasing numbers of biracial and multiethnic children are utilizing child care programs today. This effective trainer’s curriculum, published and available for $30.00 through the Childcare Health Program in Berkeley, California, will assist trainers in delivering workshops that will help child care providers support and meet the needs of the dual-heritage child and his or her family. 17) You Never Know……..So Break Out Your Party Clothes! Kristen Wheeler Highland Have you ever found yourself waiting? Saying to yourself….as soon as_______ happens, then I can ________. What are we waiting for? As our lives become busier and filled with more “stuff”, many of us realize we are becoming more disconnected; for other and ourselves. Join us to explore how each of us can pay attention to what life is really about: connection, kindness, empathy and love. A chance to create a life of inner abundance, to break out the good dishes and wear your party pants! 18) Engaging Adult Learners – The Questioning-Technique Toolbox Carla Boyd Educational research shows us that engaged learners are more likely to apply new information and make changes in their childcare programs. This workshop will focus on how we as trainers can use specific questioning strategies for participant engagement. Each attendee will leave with a “toolbox” of questioning strategies for face to face and online classes. 19) Adding Joy and Humor to Your Life Sue Long & Kelly Kring In this interactive workshop, we will develop creative strategies to find humor in day to day situations. We will also create new ideas to lighten up, live longer, and laugh. Learn the ten ta-das of joyful living. 20) Choosing Curriculum: Which one is Right for Your Center? Gloria Deziel & Charlotte Nitardy Research shows that preschool programs with a planned, comprehensive curriculum that addresses the multiple areas in which children grow and learn has a more positive impact on child outcomes. But with so many choices, how do I know which one is right for my program? This workshop will provide an overview of preschool curriculums such as child-initiated and teacher-directed curriculums. Curriculums discussed will include Montessori, High/Scope, HighReach Learning, Reggio Emilia, Pinacle Early Childhood, SPARK, and Creative Curriculum. We will provide information on the history, philosophy, and characteristics of each curriculum, give examples from our working experience with each curriculum. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and will discuss the challenges in implementing each curriculum and strategies to support successful implementation.

21) Lawful and Effective Staffing Practice Sheila Engelmeier Learn from an attorney, who has helped providers for the last 20 years, what are the most important tips about hiring and firing, including steps to take to make sure your policies and practices are lawful and effective. 12:45-2:15 (1.5 hour sessions) 22) Training Providers to Regain their Personal Power and Create a Work life they Love through Intentionality and Self-Responsibility LuShawna Romeo & Rhonda Anderson This workshop has been designed for leaders, trainers, and anyone working in the childcare field. The format will be highly interactive and will expect the participants to share openly. Techniques, activities, and lecture will be offered in the areas of: self-care, intentionality, personal power, self-driven fulfillment, self-assessment, and abundance.
