Juhyo or rime appears on the trees in various shapes typically around January and February. Viewing the rime forest from above is one of the great pleasures of the Hakkoda Mountains. On a clear day, the Tsugaru Plain and Mt. Iwaki are visible from the Summit Park Station.

Juhyo or the rime forest, created by trees and a meteorological phenomenon peculiar to the Zao mountain range, best represents wintertime in Zao. The trees, covered with snow and ice, take on a shape that has been referred to as a “snow monster”; these count-less “monsters”, as far as the eyes can see, are a natural wonder.

Juhyo (Snow Monsters)

The Oga Peninsula jets out into the Sea of Japan. On the north-ernmost point is the complex coastline of Nyudozaki. Only winter offers the dynamic scenery of the rough waters of the Sea of Ja-pan smashing against the cliffs and precipices amidst the driving cold winter wind.

Set against the magnifi cent Mt. Iwate, a single cherry blossom tree (prunus pendula) spreads its roots across the vast green fi eld of Koiwai Farm. This single, dignifi ed cherry blossom tree is a beautiful sight amidst the quiet fi eld of snow. You’ll certainly want to see this fantastic and striking winter scene with your own eyes.
