EPA Releases Drinking Water Action Plan

On 30 November 2016, the United States (U.S.) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the release of a "Drinking Water Action Plan" that outlines guidance practices and suggestions to increase the reliability of drinking water. The plan reflects contributions received from multiple stakeholders, including states, government organizations, and drinking water utilities. The plan focuses on the following six priority areas:

Promote Equity and Build Capacity for Drinking Water Infrastructure Financing and Management in Disadvantaged, Small, and Environmental Justice Communities

Advance Next Generation Oversight for the Safe Drinking Water Act Strengthen Source Water Protection and Resilience of Drinking Water Supplies Take Action to Address Unregulated Contaminants Improve Transparency, Public Education, and Risk Communication on Drinking Water Safety Reduce Lead Risks though the Lead and Copper Rule

Additional information is available on EPA's website.

In conjunction with development of the plan, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) completed a study on the science and technology for drinking water safety and provided recommendations in the PCAST report that align with the suggestions in EPA's plan.

Values of Fundamental Constants Updated

On 22 November 2016, the National Institute of Standards and Technology published updated values for fundamental constants in the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data. The updated values were determined using two ytterbium atomic clocks that resulted in extremely stable and precise measurements. The precise measurements allow the fundamental constant values to be associated with base units, such as the meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, and candela, in the International System of Units (that is, the Metric System). Defining the Metric System's base units in terms of fundamental constants will result in eliminating uncertainty from equations that describe the laws of nature.
