Existing Bridge Configuration

Background Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge, Highway 49

Constructed 1964-1967 17 span high level bridge, 847 m long Carries 2 lanes on N-S oriented traffic Steel girders, concrete deck 5 continuous spans, 6 expansion joints 1992-dual columns replaced with single shaft at 3 piers

Existing Condition Deck: Extensively deteriorated (corrosion) Substandard barrier walls Substandard lane width Girders: Many fatigue prone details general coating failure Substructure: Generally sound except Pier 14 (beneath EJ) Minor scour at Pier 13 footing Abutments cannot accommodate widening

Bridge Rehabilitation Work

Replace superstructure

Reconstruct abutments, including new caissons, new wingwalls

Replace bridge bearings/alter bridge articulation

Eliminate expansion joints over piers

Rehabilitate and strengthen piers

New approach slabs

Reconstruct highway approaches to the bridge

Construction Overview New superstructure with

5 segments, replace 1 segment per year

‘Half-and-half’ staged construction with a single-lane of bi-directional traffic on the bridge controlled by temp. traffic signals for each Segment.

All lanes available during seasonal shutdown

MBQ Fishing Rights Area between piers 10 and 12 to remain accessible for MBQ to

exercise fishing rights during July and August each year Exception: only when construction work is performed between the

piers Advise intention to restrict access prior to May 15
