my free time I enjoy reading, gardening, and scrapbooking.

Pam RiceThis is my fifteenth year teaching at Reiley. I received my

County Schools for 25 years.

I have been married for 25 years and I am a parent of 6 children who participate in track, cross country,

After Fall Break, twice a week, our students will participate in RBI time. That stands for Rit Band Instruction. A RIT score is the score we receive from the MAP tests our students take three times per year. The results from these tests give us information on each

child’s strengths and weaknesses in the areas of math, reading, and language usage. Teachers analyze those scores and provide

small group direct instruction during RBI time.

We will be needing a lot of volunteers for this because we will be grouping all three first grade classes together. Then we will take that group and dividing it into the RIT bands. These groups work

best when the groups only have 4- 5 students. Therefore the more people we can get to help during this time the smaller and more

individualized we can get our groups.

During Guided reading, all of the students read and work together. We will read “big books”, basal reading books, poems, sing songs and even act out plays. Shared reading allows us to model and support the students as they work through the reading process.

During Centers, we will call them over in small groups to read a book that is on or near their level while the other students are working on independent work at the “centers”.

During the Working with Words time, we will be practicing the phonics, building words and/or practicing sight words that are in our reading series for the week.

Each week, we will have a list of spelling words for the students to work on at home. We will be working on these words at school as well. On Friday, we will have a spelling test. We would like each student to master every word but will score these on a developmental scale. Beginning with whether they know the spelling pattern, beginning sounds and final sounds. The word lists progresses through the first grade skills.

Your child will be bringing a “Book Bag” home every Monday. Please make every effort to return the bag everyday. We will use these during center time and small reading groups. We will keep it on

Thursday in order to get it ready for the next week.

Each week the bag will contain: •A Take-Home Leveled reader

•Two Decodable Readers•A Reading Log

•Spelling List to study

•Your child will get to keep the decodable readers at home.

The daily breakfast cost is $1.00 per day. Breakfast beings at 8:00. The daily lunch cost is $2.00 per day.

Each student has been assigned a four digit number by the cafeteria in order to access their meal account. It is like a debit card without the card. Parents may prepay

breakfast/lunch by the week, month, or longer. Students wanting extra servings can purchase those from their account. You may register for the MealPayPlus system online to directly deposit money into your child’s account. You may also check online to see

what they are purchasing each day! If you have any concerns please contact the Nancy Seiter, cafeteria manager.

As your child purchases lunch or breakfast the computer system will deduct that cost from your child’s account. Only one breakfast and one lunch may be deducted each day, so no one else can use your child’s account. There is also a picture of your child that shows up on the computer screen when their number is entered. Parents will be contacted if students accumulate breakfast/ lunch charges. You may sign in and eat

lunch with your child anytime. However, NO fast food or sodas are allowed during the school lunch hours.

We have a new charge system in place. After $20.00 worth of charges and notification an alternative lunch will be given to student.

We will be going back and forth between science and social studies. We have started the year off with a social studies unit titled “Government and Civics”. Other topics include Unity &

Diversity, Geography, Energy Transformations, Culture & Society, Historical Perspective, Structure & Transformation of Matter, Motion & Forces, Economics, and Biological Change.

Everyday the students will go to the computer lab to work on the Fast ForWord program. This is a self paced learning program that

helps with reading. Each student listens to the computer to complete the activities. There are usually three different “games” each day.

We will be keeping track of their daily points and awarding prizes to the top scores. There are several levels to complete and we hope to

have all of our students complete them all. If a student is having trouble in an area they will get a red flag on our daily report.

Students with red flags will receive some one on one time with Mrs. Kramer or us to see if it is a skill problem or just a computer operator

problem.

The schedule will rotate with blue, gold, and white days. Ms. Jenkins and Ms.

Campbell will work with the students in the library. Mr. Tucker is our P.E. teacher, and Mrs. Livers will teach

Integrated Arts in the Music and Art room on a rotation.

Please remind your child to wear gym shoes on P.E. days. The students will

be checking out and returning books to the library. They should keep them in their backpacks after reading them at

home so the book will be here on Library days.

Campbell County Schools follow the Everyday Mathematics curriculum. At the beginning of each unit you will see a parent note come home in your child’s folder that will

explain the concepts we are working on in class. There is usually some suggestions to help reinforce them at home.

We will have homework (called Home Links) which will correlate with the topic we are working on in class that day or review a previous one. Please make every effort to return

that the next day. IMPORTANT: We need each child to bring in 50 pennies, 20 nickels, 20 dimes, and 8 quarters to be kept in their math tool kit. We have found that students do better with recognizing coins when they are exposed to real ones as opposed to plastic ones. Thank you if you have already sent this in.

Students will be creating writers’ notebooks and keeping journals this year. We will create several pieces of their

writing for the students’ working folders to be passed on to the second grade. Some of the pieces students will create

include stories, poems, personal pieces, and reflective pieces.

In the afternoon, students will be called usually be table to clean out their mailbox and will take a bathroom break. We will get our things out of the

lockers and then pack up. We wait in our seats until the car riders and after school people are dismissed and our bus is called.

If you child is a regular pickup, please consider getting a car tag. These students are sent to the gym after school where they are then dismissed out

the back of the gym to your car. This cuts down on foot traffic at the front door while the buses are being loaded.

If a change in the regular dismissal plan is needed, please send us a note that morning or call the office before 2:00. The office gets pretty busy at the end of the day and last minute changes are really hard on everyone.

Homework is meant to reinforce what we are working on in class; therefore, your child should know what to do. On most

occasions homework is to be retuned the next day, unless otherwise stated. A lot of times homework is used in class

the next day. If a student does not return the homework on the due date, he/she will lose a chip. The first two times a

student forgets homework he/she will be given a reminder. The third time will result in a lost chip.

Please take the time to sit down with your child and offer assistance with homework. When you are looking over your child’s homework please remember to check for errors

and neatness.

Please remind your child to use pencil on homework.

We will be ordering books from Scholastic Book Clubs periodically this year. The orders may be turned in to your child’s teacher or ordered online. If you send it

in, please send exact change or write a check to Scholastic Book Clubs- one check can be written for

all orders that week. If you order online, you may use your credit card.

All volunteers must complete a criminal records check and be approved by the school system. Volunteers and visitors are required (by law) to sign in at the office and wear a badge. This is very important in order to maintain a safe

building for our students and also allows us to know who is in the building in case of emergency.

Volunteers are needed to help prepare teacher materials, to work in the library, and to tutor students in the classroom. I encourage you to volunteer. I also need volunteers to work special activities and to supervise students on field trips. You must have the criminal records check if you plan to go on a field trip or come in

for parties. Simply visiting a classroom is disruptive to student learning and should be avoided.

If you choose to volunteer please remember that student information must be kept confidential.

Volunteer in our Classroom!

Reiley Elementary is fortunate to have great parental support and we appreciate all that is done for our school. We have parents and grandparents who volunteer on a regular basis and all of this support helps make Reiley a successful school. We now have opportunities available for parents/guardians to serve on three different committees. Following is an explanation about each committee.

School Improvement Plan (SIP):Each year our school writes an improvement plan that will be used for the following year. It is now time to start this process.

The SIP committee typically meets once or twice per month for approximately one to two hours per meeting. The meetings are usually held before school or at 3:45.

Curriculum and Assessment:This committee will look at strategies and ideas to enhance our curriculum and how to best prepare our students for the end of year assessment.

The Curriculum and Assessment committee only meets when the SBDM council extends a charge. The meetings are usually held before school or at 3:45.

School Climate and Safety:This committee will look into the school’s climate. They will also look into safety issues of our school.

The School Climate and Safety committee only meets when the SBDM council extends a charge. The meetings are usually held before school or at 3:45.

If you are interested in serving on a committee please sign up on the list and someone will contact you.

We each look forward to working with you and your child this year. It is going to be a wonderful year filled with exciting learning

activities!

for taking the time to attend Parent Night!
