I. Verb patterns
• It’s used to connect two verbs. VERB 1 + VERB 2 • THE SECOND VERB can take one of three different
forms: to + infinitive, infinitive without to, -ing• It depends on THE FIRST VERB which form it will
take.
VERB 1 (*) + VERB 2 (*) It belongs to the first list of verbs in your WS. (agree, appear, arrange, etc.)
Example: I hope to pass the exam.
FORM I (TO + INFINITIVE):
VERB 1 (*) VERB 2

PRACTICE:

VERB 1 (*) + OBJECT + VERB 2 (*) It belongs to the second list of verbs in your WS. (advise, allow, cause, etc.) These verbs are used with an object.
Example: We encouraged him to go to the stadium with us.
FORM I (cont.):
VERB 1 (*) OBJECT VERB 2

VERB 1 (*) + VERB 2 (*) These verbs are the modal verbs.
Example: I’ll bring the cake for the birthday.
FORM II (INFINITIVE WITHOUT TO):

Example: You let the thieves escape from prison. You make me feel shiny and new.
