A convenient way of collecting and sending parcels

What are the mainstays of a postal operator’s business? Declining volumes of letter mail indicates that that sector is not going to be one of them. However there are still areas where posts are making good money, with one of the most important being the parcel business – as a

result of the growing importance of e-commerce – and financial services. There are already examples of postal banks that are often an important income source for a postal group.

‘To e or not to e’ is no longer the question. Shopping online is gaining its

momentum and people are spending more money with e-retailers. Among many reasons for this trend one can list a bigger choice of products in one place, lower prices, and comfort and confidence factor in as well as people can sit at home and buy things with just one click.

E300 million) to offer the solution in a rental model. In this way our partners will not have to make a huge upfront investment, but will be able to use the service in a pay-per-parcel model. More information about the benefits of such a solution was presented in the September issue of Postal Technology International (p112). In addition to Europe, easyPack terminals are, or shortly will be, operating in Australia, Chile and Saudi Arabia.

Future of retail The post office retail network has long been an area where postal operators have lost money. Postal companies are often obliged by law to maintain a substantial network of largely unprofitable postal outlets. InPost’s postal terminal is a solution that offers services required by postal regulators, namely registered letters and money orders. Moreover it may help in the transformation of postal operators.

Registered letters remain a very lucrative segment. There are still many public companies that send official documents that have to be signed for by the recipient – and that is becoming more difficult nowadays. People are usually working

For similar reasons InPost introduced easyPack. With parcel terminals customers have a convenient way of collecting and sending parcels at a self-service pick-up point. There is no need to wait for half an hour in a queue to collect a parcel or be tied down at home waiting for a courier delivery. With easyPack it takes just 17 seconds to collect a delivery and machines are located on the way from your home to your school or office.

InPost’s ambition is to place a massive total of 16,000 machines across Europe in the coming few years. We are partnering with local postal operators and courier companies to offer this solution in most European countries, in six of which the network is already operating: Cyprus, Estonia, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland and Russia. Next on the list will be Czech Republic, Latvia, Slovakia, Spain, Ukraine and the UK.

InPost, the largest alternative postal operator, is also a producer and real user of over 450 parcel terminals in Poland – and by the end of 2012 there will be 615. Together with a private equity fund Pinebridge Investments, InPost is investing over E108 million in a first stage (in total

during the day, so it is often difficult for residents to meet their local postman. Then ‘failed delivery’ note is left and people have to go to their local post office and queue to receive a letter.

For those reasons InPost will present at Post Expo 2012 its latest easyPack with additional functionality that enables it to serve as a postal self-service unit. It will be a combination of parcel and postal terminal, so customers will be able to collect registered letters and also drop and collect parcels.

InPost has already convinced two innovative postal operators – Eesti Post, and Saudi Post – to test this solution. InPost is open to cooperation with more postal operators to trial this solution in more markets.

In addition the terminal has an integrated ATM, giving customers the convenience of being able to withdraw and deposit money. To offer this solution we have partnered with NCR, a global technology company with self-service solutions for ATM machines. There is also a modular version of the easyPack, so the number of columns and locker boxes can be modified according to need. n
