ou r m i s s io n “To rejoice in, and share
the good news of Jesus Christ
The tragic death of Linda Smearsoll in a car accident on I-271 last month was a shock and caused many of us to stop and think about life. The family has asked that we do a celebration of life sometime this summer at Rejoice, when they can gather family together. As in many cases of sudden death, this tragedy made me think of my own mortality. What would happen to my family? Would they be able to go on and have I prepared them enough for the days without my physical presence? This is not something we like to think about and seldom talk about. But it is a reality that everyone must face at some point. Have I planned enough? Is there a living will? Is there a will? Is there enough life insurance? What about my pension? Is there enough? These are all personal matters but need to be addressed. I suppose the simple answer is: Have faith! But as James tells us, “Faith without works is dead.” – James 2:17
Then there is the other question: What about my church family? Is there leadership to guide them through this time? Do they know the things that must be done to ensure that the mission and ministry continue? Again, I suppose the simple answer is: Have faith! But, have we put in the ground-work and the foundation to carry it out? This situation is going to happen at some point even if it is just me accepting another call somewhere or retiring. What are the important things we need to do to get us through the tough times? What are the things we need to do now? It is simpler than you think.
1. Make Decisions
2. Think long-term
3. Don’t let things get personal
4. Be honest
5. Be diligent
Each of these basic things requires sacrifice. None of these are easy. They each cost us something. Making a decision costs you other opportunities you could have pursued. Thinking long term can cost you easy wins right now. Honesty and keeping personal feelings out of your decision-making might cost you a relationship, if that person confuses your loyalty to him or her and your commitment to your church and its mission. Diligence requires you to sacrifice comfort. We will only make these sacrifices if we keep Jesus’ sacrifice for us at the forefront of our minds. He made these same small sacrifices for us in his life and ministry, and he paid the ultimate sacri-fice for us when he died for our sins. Our lives must not only follow his example of sacrificial leadership, but it must also flow out of his sacrifice for us. That will ensure that wherever he is leading our church, we will be moving toward him.
Peace, Pastor Mike

Dinner for Eight Dinner for Eight is currently on break for the summer. We will kick off the new season in late August or early September with a barbeque for all who wish to participate or want to come and see what Dinner for Eight is all about. Watch for details in the Au-gust newsletter.
Summer Finances As we enter into the summer months the budget picture looks a little ominous as we are losing a couple key families due to relocation. The Capital Fund has been lagging behind planned giving since the first of the year. Since we have a monthly mortgage payment of slightly over $5,000.00 this puts a burden on giving and budget in general. If you have not made a pledge to the Capital Fund or are not current on your pledge please do not let the summer months contribute to this deficit. We will need to do another capital appeal for our lender, the Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA, this year. But, it is never too early to increase a pledge. Please do not forget Rejoice in your travels this summer. We continue to do ministry all year round.
Garden There will be some garden space available this year and should be ready the first week of June for planting. If you are interested in some space or helping please see Pastor Mike.
Synod Assembly The Northeastern Ohio Synod Assembly will be June 9-10 at the John S. Knight Center in Akron. Ginny Pillsbury and Scott Morgan will be attending as Rejoice delegates. Pastor Mike will be attending and speaking about the possi-bility of Shared Ministry in a Synod Workshop.
Strategic Update During April and May, a task force was created and met several times to review Rejoice’s strategic plan – the “how” around accomplishing our mission of sharing God’s Love in the world. Progress to date: The team has met 4 times through April and May and has 2-3 more meetings be-fore expected completion around June 30. We are on pace and about 60% complete. Activities Completed: To date, the team has:
reviewed Rejoice’s current mission and vision statements and continue to find them relevant, Christ-centered and sufficiently broad enough.
explored materials and discussed the ELCA’s strategic direction document, compiled a SWOT analysis (a list of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats)
for Rejoice, reviewed community trends and needs in Hudson and surrounding communities, held discussions with the Bishop, community leaders and other area pastors reviewed several documents, articles, and books on church trends and ways to improve
or prevent churches from decline. Common Themes: We have identified several common themes from our Situation Analysis review including Community needs, Use of Technology, Shared or mutual ministry with other congregations, Youth & Education, and Keeping our vision focus on sharing the Good News of Christ in all we do Next Steps: During the next few weeks, the team will build consensus and narrow the themes identi-fied, draft preliminary strategy statements and goals and continue to communicate and gather feed-back from the Council and congregation. If you have questions or thoughts to share, please contact Paige Giannetti or Bethany Bryant.

June is Men’s Health Month
The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health prob-lems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. There is a” Silent Health Crisis,” according to Dr. David Gremilion. ”It’s the fact that, on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women.”
Compared to women, men are more likely to
Smoke and drink Make unhealthy or risky choices Put off regular checkups and medical care There are also health conditions that only affect men, such as prostate cancer and low testosterone. Many of the major health risks that men face - like colon cancer or heart disease - can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis.
Take Charge of Your Health:
See a doctor for regular checkups even if you feel fine. Stay up to date on important shots (like flu, tetanus, pneumonia and shingles) Watch out for signs of health problems like diabetes or depression Eat healthy and be active
Get screening tests to find problems early:
Get your blood pressure checked at least once every 2 years. Talk to your doctor about getting your cholesterol checked. If you are age 50 to 74, get tested regularly for colorectal cancer. If you are a man age 65 to 75 and have ever smoked, talk with your doctor about your risk for abdominal
aortic aneurysm (AAA). If you feel stressed, anxious, or sad, ask your doctor to screen you for depression
Ask your doctor about taking aspirin every day. If you are age 50 to 59, taking aspirin every day can lower your risk of heart attack and colorectal cancer.

Rummage Sale The youth will be holding a rummage sale on June 16 and 17 from 9-3 at the church. Donations of salable items are currently being accepted and may be dropped off in the middle classroom on the left hand side of the hallway. The last day to drop off donations is June 13th, in or-der to give us time to sort and price everything. We cannot accept: car seats, old cribs/playpens (must meet current safety standards), old style TV’s, outdated sporting equipment (i.e. old style skis, wooden tennis rac-quets, etc.), exercise equipment (i.e. weight benches/weights, exercise bikes, etc.), old computer equipment, outdated electronics, VHS tapes, anything that is broken, non-working, torn, stained or dirty. These items DO NOT sell and we must find a way to dispose of them, sometimes as a cost to us! Thank you for editing your donations before dropping them off!
All clothing and textiles left over will be placed in the St.Pauly clothing shed and other items will be donated to other non-profits. Proceeds from the sale will go toward expenses for our youth and adult leaders attend-ing the 2018 ELCA youth Gathering in Houston.
