i-RPS: Routing & Policy Server

Relazione finanziaria semestrale al 30 giugno 2016

Scenario and proposition

The multimedia and multi-services networks currently under deployment and expansion are the base for current and

future service propositions that will require a strong ability to exploit the available information and network

capabilities.

In this scenario, a centralized function capable of collecting and computing

the required data and consequently providing routing and policies based

on the Service Provider’s requirements, is crucial to allow time-to-market,

differentiating services necessary to lead the communications market.

Strong of its leading position in the NGN/IMS vendor’s arena, Italtel has

designed the Routing and Policy Server (i-RPS), providing not only a centralized fully featured solution but also filling-

in a gap in the standardization bodies specifications.

i-RPS is able to combine centrally managed policy and routing

databases with local call routing, providing near-linear scalability with

significant operating costs reduction.

Moreover, i-RPS is able to provide its capabilities to all kind of networks

(VoLTE, IMS, NGN, PSTN, PLMN and R4) singularly or in a combined

way. i-RPS has been designed in order to enable centralized control of any inter-networks and intra-networks routing

providing a single point of access to the overall traffic and policy management.

Full Networks Control: a key enabler

i-RPS includes a Service DB in order to provide services that can be chained with all the i-RPS routing features,

allowing complex routing rules configuration.

i-RPS has also been equipped in order to allow control of the legacy TDM and NGN systems allowing a smooth

migration of a multi-technology network towards a homogeneous IMS.

Italtel i-RPS value proposition

• Simplified Routing Management

• Simplified new deployments

• Smooth Network Evolution

Relazione finanziaria semestrale al 30 giugno 2016

i-RPS has been designed to address networks where the SS7 and SIP/Diameter paradigms coexist. For this

purpose, i-RPS can be triggered leveraging standard interfaces (INAP, MAP, Camel, Diameter, SIP, LDAP,

DNS/ENUM) all compliant to ITU, ETSI and 3GPP recommendations.

I-RPS provides the capability to invoke

external systems (e.g. ENUM server) to

allow the coexistence between different

technologies reducing Capex expenses for

network modernization

In an IMS centric scenario, i-RPS acts as a

centralized Transit Server that provides all

the routing and policy information needed by

the MGCF and IMS entities in order to allow

traffic control centralization and

harmonization in implementing a complete

Transit functionality.

In this heterogeneous environment, i-RPS harmonizes the routing and policy functionalities among the existing and

future environments. i-RPS full configuration is achieved through an effective Graphical User Interface together with a

massive provisioning option.

Success stories i-RPS is currently in field in some of the largest worldwide

convergent operators (i-RPS deployments in blue in the

map on the right).

Italtel supported a major operator in Brasil to realize cost

effective National Transit and Wholesale services,

optimized by virtualized Routing Policy Server i-RPS, with

minimized impact on IT Systems.

Since 2013, Italtel has accompanied a large German operator in the process of centralizing the control of emergency

calls with the virtualized Routing Policy Server i-RPS to get a significant reduction of operational costs. In 2014, Italtel

provided the operator with a single point of routing provisioning among its complex networks and database for both

Number Portability and Emergency Calls services by the deployment of a new i-RPS.

In 2015, Italtel deployed i-RPS in U.S.A and Europe, for a worldwide operator; in this solution, the Italtel Routing

Policy Server plays the role of a Centralized Routing Engine in an International Full IP network. In 2017, 8 Italtel i-RPS

have been deployed in a leading Brazilian Service Provider network to expand the transit network. In 2018, Italtel

deployed i-RPS in U.K. for a large British company playing the role of a Routing DB in their Next Generation Network

and Spain for a large mobile operator in the context of a convergent IP interconnection solution.
