HighlightsWork program bids (W14-6) close 2 April 2015
Work program bids (W14-7) close 2 October 2014
Cash bids (W14-20) close 5 February 2015• Gas province with numerous multi-Tcf
accumulations
• Shallow to deep water depths, 100–500 m
• Proven Triassic horst plays and Cretaceous structural and stratigraphic plays
• Regional and intraformational claystone seals
• Proximity to infrastructure and pipelines to Karratha gas plant
• Special Notices apply, refer to Guidance notes
Release Area W14-6 is located north of, and adjacent to, the Goodwyn gas accumulation on the Rankin Platform. It is, at its closest, 150 km northwest of Dampier and extends onto the eastern Exmouth Plateau. Release Area W14-7 straddles the central Rankin Platform, between the Echo/Yodel, Iago, and Wheatstone gas accumulations and is, at its closest, 140 km northwest of Dampier.
Release Area W14-20 comprises a single graticular block in the vicinity of the Iago, Wheatstone, Pluto and Brunello/Brokenwood/Brulimar gas accumulations, 160 km northwest of Dampier and 65 km north of Barrow Island. This Release Area is considered mature in exploration status and is available for cash bidding.
AUSTRALIA 2014 Offshore Petroleum Exploration Acreage Release 2
The Rankin Platform is a northeast-trending structural high, situated on the southeastern side of the Exmouth Plateau, separated from the Dampier and Barrow sub-basin depocentres by major extensional fault systems. The Rankin Trend includes the Gorgon, Julimar, Iago, Goodwyn, Perseus and North Rankin gas accumulations, which access hydrocarbons sourced from Triassic fluvio-deltaic sediments of the Mungaroo Formation, as well as Lower–Middle Jurassic sediments in the adjacent Barrow and Dampier sub-basins. The accumulations are top-sealed by the regional Lower Cretaceous Muderong Shale, as well as intraformational claystones within the Berriasian–Valanginian Barrow Group, Forestier Claystone and equivalents, the Toarcian–Callovian Athol and Legendre formations, and the Triassic Mungaroo Formation, resulting in stacked hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs. A number of gas pipelines connect the Rankin Platform gas accumulations with the onshore gas plant at Karratha.

Petroleum systems elements
Rankin Platform and eastern Exmouth Plateau
Sources • Triassic fluvio-deltaic sediments of the Mungaroo Formation (gas-prone)
• Lower–Middle Jurassic marine and deltaic Murat Siltstone and Athol and Legendre formations (gas-prone)
Reservoirs • Triassic fluvio-deltaic sandstones of the Mungaroo Formation
Seals Regional seal
• Lower Cretaceous marine claystones of the Muderong Shale
Intraformational seals
• Lower Cretaceous distal marine claystones of the Barrow Group (Forestier Claystone equivalents)
• Upper Jurassic condensed marls and claystones of Dingo Claystone equivalents
• Intra-formational fluvio-deltaic claystones of the Mungaroo Formation
Traps • Tilted Triassic fault blocks and associated drapes
• Lower Cretaceous stratigraphic traps
Infrastructure and marketsThe Release Areas are in the vicinity of a number of gas platforms and the Okha floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. Numerous gas pipelines connect the Rankin Platform gas accumulations with the onshore gas plant at Karratha, including the Northwest Shelf 42” Trunkline and the recently commissioned Pluto Gas Pipeline. Additionally, the proposed Wheatstone Pipeline to Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area (ANSIA) runs through Release Area W14-20.
Critical risksGas charge is pervasive throughout the Rankin Platform, so for Release Areas W14-7 and W14-20, trap geometry, reservoir occurrence and quality are the main risks. Reservoir quality is enhanced in the shallower Triassic reservoirs, and sandstone distribution is a risk for the Upper Jurassic and higher plays which rely on discontinuous sandstones within fine-grained deep water deposits. Gas flushing is a major risk to the preservation of any early oil charge. For instance, hydrocarbon indications in Carey 1 (2008), within Release Area W14-20, were interpreted to be residual oil. For Release Area W14-6 a lack of gas charge may also be a risk, with no gas discoveries being made in the northeastern Exmouth Plateau.
