AND SEEMINGLY REVEALED THAT THEY ARE SPYING ON

    HACKTIVISTS

    By Dell C

Youve probably already heard of Anonymous, the worlds most infamous group of cybertrolling

hacktivists. They frequently make headlines for crashing websites and looting corporate and

government servers. Usually these hacktivists come together in defense of others, such as Julian

Assange, the people of Gaza, victims of police brutality, or even victims of rape. But now,

Anonymous has turned its eyes on a personal rival. This enemy has its own cybersquad of secret

spies who, according to Anonymous, spend the majority of their time in chat rooms collecting

intelligence about them. With this latest release of stolen data, Anonymous has just pulled back

the curtain on their foe: the Bank of America.

On February 25 @AnonymousIRC, an Anonymous Twitter account with over 280,000 followers,

began posting teasers about a massive Bank of America data leak. The first post declared, If

you spy on us, we spy on you. What followed was 14 gigabytes of private emails, spreadsheets,

and a text analysis and data mining program called OneCalais. The emails in the release

originated from Cyber Threat Intelligence Analysts who identified themselves as employees of a

company called TEKsystems. TheTEKsystems websiteappears to be nothing more than a

staffing agency and seems wholesome enough. Theres definitely nothing that screams we are

cyberspies! Its safe to assume these analysts were hired by Bank of America, regardless of their

TEKsystems titles, because according to the leaked emails that Anonymous released, each of

them were using @bankofamerica.com email addresses while filing their reports.

Having a team on staff to protect a corporation from potential cyberthreats is nothing new. This

isnt what caught the attention of Anonymous to begin with; it was the methods being employed

by Bank of America to gather data. Each of the 500 plus emails pilfered reads like a surveillancereport, most of them reporting on the activities of online activists from Anonymous to Occupy Wall

    Street.

In oneemail, TEKsystems reveals that IRC chat users were discussing a document on the US

House of Representatives website, house.gov, which listed companies that had officially given

their support to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). In the IRC chat, one of the users says, Do

these organizations know what theyve started? Follow the money. In the email, the Bank of

America security analyst responds to this unrest privately, writing, Included among those named

are two of our critical suppliers: MasterCard Worldwide and Visa, Inc. This has been the only

mention of this document at this time, and it has not hit Twitter as of ye t.

Inanotheremail, a TEKsystems analyst identifies an Anonymous Twitter account known as

Anonymousown3r and then shares a document that appears to show the users real identity,

along with his IP address. The analyst states, [the IP address] is listed in Brazil... This was also

confirmed by a security analyst 86_g (Twitter). This isnt the only private information Bank of

America was handling. Anotherreportdiscusses a different Twitter account, DestructiveSec,

and their conflict with hackers known as TeaMp0is0N. The analyst write s, TeaMp0is0N is

claiming victory over the feud between the two groups and has provided a d0x of DestrutivSec

[sic] in the form of a passport photo with comments: Yes! Submit them! Also, report to the feds.

Get em arrested as well #RunRabbitRun.

Its fair to note that a large number of the emails appear to be addressing legitimate threats to

Bank of America, such as databases of stolen credit card numbers, or plans by activists to crash

a website by flooding it with useless traffic via a denial of service attack. Other reports detail live

protests meant to take place at actual Bank of America locations.

The stolen data was spread through various Anonymous accounts, but one group in particular

took responsibility for its release. Theyre called Par:AnoIA, and I had the opportunity to

interview one of their members. They preferred not to be identified by name or even by gender.

The first thing Anon wanted me to know was, Par:AnoIA is no hacking group. We are a

publisher much like any other media outlet. The main difference is that we publish data and

information as received. According to Par:AnoIA, information is given to them, and their sources

intentionally remain anonymous. The information, Par:AnoIA says, wasnt hacked at all. It was just

sitting on an unsecured server readily accessible by anyone who knew where to look. This is a

common issue that they believe endangers the personal and financial information of millions of

consumers.I asked Par:AnoIA, who was busy indexing Bank of Americas emails to ease search capabilities

of the leaked information, what they had found most interesting about the data released so far.

Its amazing to learn that there are paid analysts actually reading public chat roo ms. We were

quite aware of the fact that Anonymous are likely monitored, but we were thinking more along the

lines of automatic logging. The data not only shows that there were actual people monitoring the

channels (and Twitter) 24/7, but they send shift reports to Bank of America with their findings.

Alistof thousands of keywords was included in the released data, presumably to aid Bank of

America in data mining. According to Par:AnoIA, The keyword list is just ridiculous. It has

become a running joke to use the keywords in every sentence now, rendering it useless. The

ridiculousness of the keywords frankly cannot be overstated. Among the words Bank of America

was searching for, I found homosexual, demonology, and Buck 65. The last is the name of a

Canadian hip-hop artist. However there are also terms like OccupyWallStreet, Internet KillSwitch, and Interrogation.

Par:AnoIA was still reviewing the bulk of the data when I spoke with them, but there were a few

items that seemed to stand out, such as the installation files for the text-analyzing software

OneCalais. Included was an additional code for OneCalais that Par:AnoIA claimed was likely

used to customize the program for Bank of Americas use. OneCalais is software sold by

ClearForest, a Thomson Reuters company based in Israel, and according to Par:AnoIA, Israel is

where the server they took all this data from sits. According to Par:AnoIAspress release, an

additional 4.8 Gigabyte of data containing detailed career and salary information of thousands of

executives and employees from various corporations all around the world was extracted from the

server. The folder the employee data was located in was labeled Bloomberg, which Par:AnoIA

believed might link to the multinational media corporation of the same name.

I asked Par:AnoIA whether they were concerned about the consequences of releasing the Bank

of America intel ,or putting a copy of what is likely a very expensive piece of software like

OneCalais online for anyone to access. The Anons replied, Yeah the thing is, the download of

the data *might* be illegal, but no one has claimed it. That would mean confirming its authenticity.

Either way, its a win-win for us.

Disclaimer: Bank of America has not admitted that the data Anonymous released belongs to them,

nor have they admitted that they are working with the third-party technology company,

TEKsystems. Their statement on the matter was merely that "a third-party company was

compromised... This company was working on a pilot program for monitoring publicly available

information to identify information security threats." Adding thattheir own internal systems

    were not compromised.

The source of this release has confirmed that the data was not acquired by a hack but because it

was stored on a misconfigured server and basically open for grabs, Par:AnoIA said. Looking at

the data it becomes clear that Bank of America, TEKSystems and others (see origins of reports)

gathered information on Anonymous and other activists' movement on various social mediaplatforms and publicInternet Relay Chat(IRC) channels.

The Anonymous collective said the data was actually retrieved from an open, insecure server in

Tel Aviv, Israel, but also managed to obtain a full version of ClearForests text analyzing

software called OneCalais, which was stored and openly accessible on the same server.

Among the leaked documents, Anonymous discovered that TEKSystems had compiled reports

last year about hackers and so-called cyber threats,as well asonline activitysurrounding theOccupy Wall Street movement. Anonymous dismissed all of this research as sloppy, random

    and valueless.

Apparently a keyword list was used to match for items of interest on IRC, Twitter and other

social media, Par:AnoIA said. While the list has over 10.000 [sic] entries only 1,125 keywordsseem to be genuine, the rest are simply Wikipedia references.

In addition to the overwhelming amount of research about Bank of Americas antagonists, the

Anonymous group also discovered an extra 4.8 gigabytes of detailed career and salaryinformation of hundreds of thousands of executives and employees from various corporations all

around the world. Anonymous noted that the folder was named Bloomberg, while the entries

were tagged with reuterscompanycontent, which could mean Bloomberg LP and/or Thomson

Reuters could have been involved or targeted as well.

What it was doing on the Israeli server is up to anyones guess, Anonymous added.

But above all, Anonymous hopes to use this data dump to spotlight these misguided efforts to

hamperonlineactivism, but also show how corporations like Bank of America are payingforthese operations to take place.

We release the received files in full to raise awareness to this issue and to send a signal tocorporations and Governments that this is unacceptable, the Anonymouspress release

    concluded.

Anonymous recently hacked the Federal Reserve on Feb. 6, and threatened to publish private

personal information about a number of Goldman Sachs employeeson Valentines Day, but did

    not.

Anonymous Hackers Hit Bank of AmericaAccording to the leaked data, the bank hired TEKSystems to monitor public channels for possible

    threats.

    ByJeff Goldman| February 28, 2013

Members of Anonymous recently published data that allegedly exposes Bank of America's practice of spying on

    hackers.

"To start with, we present you about 320mb of internal reports and and emails assembled for Bank of America by a

sub-contractor named TEKSystems (who in turn are a subsidiary of the Allegio Group whose founder also owns the

Baltimore Ravens)," the hackers wrote. "These reports and emails assembled 'intelligence' from sources like public

channels on Anonymous and other IRC networks like Anonops, Voxanon and Cryto, as well as other social media.

We were geniously [sic] amused by the fact that there are actually paid analysts sitting somewhere, reading the vast

amount [of] garbage that scrolls by in large public channels like #anonops and #voxanon."

"A press release [PDF file] from Par:AnoIA (aka Anonymous Intelligence Agency) states that the data 'clearly shows

that the research was sloppy, random and valueless,'" write Business Insider's Michael Kelley and Geoffrey Ingersoll.

"The cache also includes the source code for OneCalais, the group claims, a natural language processing (NLP)

system from Thomson Reuters subsidiary ClearForest," writes Information Age's Pete Swabey. "The implication is

that the system was used to analyze the data collected about potential hackers."

"The released archives, totaling well over 6GB, apparently also include salary and bonus details on hundred of

thousands of executives and employees from various corporations all around the world, including Google supremo

Eric Schmidt -- although his income is publicly known," writes The Register's John Leyden. "The Anonymous

Intelligence Agency claimed the swiped records were lifted from a 'misconfigured server' hosted in Israel that was

'basically open for grabs' rather than seized using security exploits and conventional hacking."

Anonymous has released 14 gigabytes of data which the organization says proves Bank of America went to the

trouble of hiring an intelligence firm to spy on troublemakers last year. According to the allegations, the bank engaged

web intelligence outfit TEKSystems to keep an eye on Occupy Wall Street protestors, hackers, and other private

citizens. Anonymous also claims the information isn't a result of a hack as it was stored on a misconfigured server

and "basically up for grabs." The list of phrases Bank of America's "spies" were looking for apparently included "keg

stand" and the Wikipedia page for Dr. Seusss "I Wish That I Had Duck Feet." Now there's money well spent. [Source]

IDG News Service - Bank of America blamed a data breach on another company that

revealed internal emails related to monitoring of hacktivist groups including Anonymous.

A group affiliated with Anonymous, which calls itself the "Anonymous Intelligence

Agency: Par:AnoIA" released what it claims is 14GB of data belonging to the bank and

other organizations, including Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg and TEKsystems.

Email correspondence in the data suggests that TEKsystems was a contractor working

for Bank of America and charged with monitoring public activity by hacker networkstargeting the bank.

In a statement, Bank of America did not confirm it was working with TEKsystems, an IT

consultancy that is part of the Allegis Group. But it said the source of the data came

from a third party. Bank of America said its own systems were not compromised.

"In this instance, a third-party company was compromised," Bank of America said

Wednesday. "This company was working on a pilot program for monitoring publicly

available information to identify information security threats."

Officials with TEKsystems and Allegis group could not be immediately reached.

In a news release, Par:AnoIA said the data came from an unsecured server in Tel Aviv.

"The source of this release has confirmed that the data was not acquired by a hack but

because it was stored on a misconfigured server and basically open for grabs," the

    group said.

Large corporations have become increasingly interested in monitoring social networks

and hacker forums for indications that they may come under attack. Companies that

specialize in that kind of monitoring have also been targeted by groups such asAnonymous.

HB Gary Federal, a California security consultancy, was compromised by Anonymous

in 2011 after the company had researched the real identities of some Anonymous

members. That breach disclosed emails describing a proposal to help Bank of

America's law firm, Hunton and Williams, discredit the whistle-blowing site WikiLeaks.

For its part, the banking industry has drawn the ire of Anonymous since it cut off

payment processing of donations to WikiLeaks.

Par:AnoIA's data dump includes a batch of more than 500 emails with brief reports on

the Occupy Wall Street movement and hacking groups such as TeaMp0isoN and

UGNazi. It also contained briefings on public releases of credit-card numbers. The

sources for the information were public sources, including Twitter, Pastebin and The

Pirate Bay, according to the emails.

The data also included a special file listing of four intelligence analysts who authored

some of the emails, including three who work for TEKsystems and one who formerly

    worked for Bank of America.

All four have deleted their LinkedIn profiles, but the profiles still appear in Google's

cache. One analyst's profile was live as recently as three days ago.

Par:AnoIA said its release also includes the application OneCalais, which collects

unstructured information from news stories, blogs and research reports. The software is

made by ClearForest, an Israeli company owned by Thomson Reuters. Officials with

Thomson Reuters and ClearForest could not be immediately reached.

The compromised data also contained salary information on executives, although much

of it appears to be publicly available.

They unveiled some 14 Gigabytes of data, code and software that allegedly shows thatBank of America and others are contracting other companies to spy and collect informationon private citizens, adding the overall quality of the research is poor and potentially false.

Hacktivists said they didnt need to break into any BofA accounts as all the documents werestored on a misconfigured server and were effectively open for grabs.

Leaked data reveal that TEKSystems assembled reports on Occupy Wall Street onlineactivity and hackers in 2012.

    Voice of Russia, SALON

    http://english.ruvr.ru/2013_02_28/Anonymous-group-claims-Bank-of-America-monitored-activists/

Par:AnoIA leaks 14 GB of data from Bank of America

    28 February 2013

Par:AnoIA (Potentially Alarming Research from the Anonymous

Intelligence Agency) has released 14 GB of data that it claims

was lifted from the Bank of America.

In a statement yesterday Par:AnoIA announced that the content comprises data related to Bank of America,

Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, TEKSystems (http://teksystems.com) and ClearForest (http://clearforest.com),

and that it contains data, code and software.

According to Anonymous, the leak is noteworthy because it includes salary information of thousands of

executives not just BOFA employees from various corporations around the world; and that BOFA has

been using a third-party contractor (TEKSystems) to collect data on private citizens while the quality of the

intelligence collected is poor and potentially false.

Perhaps most notably, however, this was not an Anonymous operation nor even a hack. The source of this

release, says the statement, has confirmed that the data was not acquired by a hack but because it was

stored on a misconfigured server and basically open for grabs. The server is physically located in Tel Aviv,

Israel. Anonymous conjectures that its location may have some relation to ClearForest, an Israeli company

whose OneCalais text analysis software was also found in the lifted data, along with a module apparently

    tailored for BOFA use.

An unexpected bonus, says Anonymous, was 4.8 Gigabyte of data containing detailed career and salary

information of hundred of thousands of executives and employees from various corporations all around the

world. Anonymous conjectures that the data may originate from Bloomberg (the name of the folder that

contained it), or Thomson Reuters since much was tagged reuterscompanycontent. Either way, What it was

doing on the Israeli server is up to anyones guess.

The irony is not lost. It has been known for some time that the banks have been involved in anti-Occupy

activities but BOFA now seems to have provided the Occupy Movement with a trove of data on some of the

1%. Whether the data privacy regulators in countries where their own citizens are among the executives

whose details have been exposed will take an interest in this breach remains to be seen. Infosecurity has

asked the ICO in the UK for a comment, and will update with any reply.

The leak includes a list of more than 10,000 words, phrases, and (seemingly arbitrary)Wikipedia entries everything from "jihad" to "keg stand" to "I Wish That I Had Duck Feet"used to find items on forums like anonops and sites including Facebook,Twitter (and

    Tweetdeck), pastebin, and various blogs.

A press release from Par:AnoIA (aka Anonymous Intelligence Agency) states that the data"clearly shows that the research was sloppy, random and valueless."

But the emails include "Daily Cyber Threat Highlights" that list events and stories from allover the world.

And the data dump adds a new element towhat is knownaboutpublicandprivateentitiessurveilling protestorsof Occupy Wall Street.

We knew that web intelligence firm Ntrepid mapped online relationships between anarchists and the

leaders of Occupy. These documents reveal that TEKSystems assembled "intelligence" reports on bothOccupy and hackers for (at least) the first 11 months of 2012.

Anonymous insists it was not a hack:

"[T]he data was not acquired by a hack but because it was stored on a misconfigured server and basicallyopen for grabs. Even more alarming, the data was retrieved from an Israeli server in Tel Aviv."

professionals at the bank, containing intelligence collected from hacking-related chat rooms and

social networks. This includes a long list of keywords including the pseudonyms of known hackers.

The cache also includes the source code for OneCalais, the group claims, a natural language

processing (NLP) system from Thomson Reuters subsidiary ClearForest. The implication is that the

system was used to analyse the data collected about potential hackers.

Thirdly, the leaked files also include "4.8 Gigabyte of data containing detailed career and salary

information of hundred of thousands of executives and employees from various corporations all

around the world," the group claims. This appears to include salary details of Google chairman Eric

    Schmidt.

The 'Anonymous Intelligence Agency' says that a source found the data on a server hosted in Israel.

"The source of this release has confirmed that the data was not acquired by a hack but because itwas stored on a misconfigured server and basically open for grabs," a press release from the group

    claimed.

"Even more alarming, the data was retrieved from an Israeli server in Tel Aviv neither the source

nor we have any idea what the data was doing there in the first place."

ClearForest is based in Tel Aviv.

Bank of America declined to comment on the news. Information Agehas invited both Thomson

    Reuters and TEKSystems to comment.

Anonymous has released 14 gigabytes of information allegedly implicating Bank of America and

others in a massive spying operation. Hacktivists claim the data dump reveals that Bank of America

(BofA) hired at least one web intelligence firm to spy on hackers, social activists and many other

    private citizens.

A statement issued Feb. 27 claims the release of data, code and software shows that Bank of

America and others are contracting other companies to spy and collect information on private

citizens. The statement goes on to report that the overall quality of the research is poor and

    potentially false.

The statement indicates the data dump contains detailed information about thousands of executives

and employees from various corporations around the world, including salary information.

Included in the data dump is 320 mb of internal reports and emails assembled for Bank of America

by a sub-contractor named TEKSystems. These reports and emails assembled intelligence from

sources like public channels on Anonymous and other IRC networks like Anonops, Voxanon and

Cryto, as well as other social media, according topar-anoia.net (aka Anonymous Intelligence

    Agency).

Hacktivists claim the release was not a hack because it (14 gigabytes of data and code) was stored

on a misconfigured server and basically open for grabs; and, the collected data was stored

insecurely and could have been retrieved by anyone.

The self-styled Anonymous Intelligence Agency (Par:AnoIA) leaked 320MB of emails and otherinformation that suggests the banking giant is running an online intelligence gathering operationagainst hacktivists.

The cache includes memos from IT contractor TEKsystems to the bank's security staff, reportingchat room and social network reconnaissance. The data dump also supposedly includes the source

code for OneCalais - a natural language processing (NLP) text analytics and data mining packagefrom Thomson Reuters subsidiary ClearForest. The story goes that the software was used to makesense of data harvested from chat rooms.

"We were amused by the fact that there are actually paid analysts sitting somewhere reading thevast amount garbage that scrolls by in large public channels like #anonops and #voxanon,"Par:AnoIA said in a statement accompanying the leak. "Even more amusing is the keyword list thatwas found, containing trigger words like 'jihad' or 'homosexual'."

The Anons alleged that the "overall quality of the research is poor and potentially false".

"The data clearly shows that the research was sloppy, random and valueless. Apparently a keyword

list was used to match items of interest on IRC, Twitter and other social media," it claimed in itsannouncement [PDF].

The released archives, totalling well over 6GB, apparently also include salary and bonus details onhundred of thousands of executives and employees from various corporations all around the world, including Google supremo Eric Schmidt - although his income is publicly known.

The Anonymous Intelligence Agency claimed the swiped records were lifted from a "misconfiguredserver" hosted in Israel that was "basically open for grabs" rather than seized using security exploitsand conventional hacking. Par:AnoIA claimed it received the info wad via an unnamed source. Howthis handler got hold of the data - especially the salary information - remains unclear.

The information disclosure, dubbed Operation Keyword, was followed by the release of arough'n'ready video by Anonymous in which the financial giant is accused of acting against theinterests of US homeowners.

Bank of America has previously been linked to attempts to gather intelligence on members ofAnonymous and associated organisations, most notably the proposals put forward by formerHBGary Federal chief exec Aaron Barr.

Barr proposed a disinformation campaign against WikiLeaks in the run up to the planned publicationof Bank of America documents by the whistle-blowing website. He also planned to expose membersof Anonymous. In retaliation, members of the collective hacked into HBGary Federal's systems, defaced its website, took over Twitter accounts and exposed 68,000 emails, including a presentationput together by the company along and two other data intelligence firms for Bank of America in 2010.

Hackers affiliated with the group Anonymous have released 14 gigabytes of information they

are tying to Bank of America and a web intelligence firm the bank hired last year to spy on

hackers and activists last year, Business Insider reports.

The trove of information is said to include information about Occupy Wall Street activists, who

camped out at Dewey Square in Boston's Financial District, among other locations around the

country, and directed much of their venom and verbal abuse at Bank of America (NYSE: BAC),the largest bank in Massachusetts.

However, the hackers were not impressed with what they found, and say they released the

information to show the banks and the security firms ineptitude.

Emails such as this onepurportedly detail how employees of TEKSystems actively watched

hacker forums and social media sites for any remotely relevant pieces of "intelligence,

according to the BI report, and kept files on what they found.

Among the terms TEKSystems was reportedly tracking? "Keg stand," and "I Wish that I Had

Duck Feet," the popular children's book by Theo LeSieg, aka Dr. Seuss.

A Bank of America representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

An Anonymous group, identifying itself as Par:AnoIA (aka Anonymous Intelligence Agency) has released

14 Gigabytes of data, code and software that it claims shows how Bank of America employed security

firms to monitor hackers and activists.

In a Wednesday press release, Par:AnoIA stated that the data shows that Bank of America and others

are contracting other companies to spy and collect information on private citizens. The release also

notes, however, that the overall quality of the research is poor and potentially false.

The data was not obtained through any hack, but was stored on a misconfigured server and basicallyopen for grabs.

Leaked documents reveal that TEKSystems assembled reports on both Occupy Wall Street online activity

and hackers throughout 2012. But the hackers group called such intelligence sloppy, random and

    valueless:

Apparently a key word list was used to match for items of interest on IRC, Twitter and other social media.

While the list has over 10.000 entries only 1125 keywords seem to be genuine, the rest are simply

    Wikipedia references.

This aspect of leaked information is reminiscent of internal DHS reports obtained revealing the agencysmonitoring of Occupy in late 2011. At the time I noted my shock at the cursory and complacent nature of

the document. This is spying? The sources cited for Occupy information are almost entirely mainstream

media reports (from the AP, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, Reuters and others).

FBI documents obtained earlier this year through FOIA by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund revealed that

an FBI program specifically dedicated to the partnership between the FBI, DHS and the private sector

monitored the Occupy protests, providing information and tips to corporate partners on interacting with and

    combating Occupy groups.
