Distributed Generation and Island PowerIn some island countries, or countries without a reliable national grid, power generation may have to be placed close to where the load or demand is located. In such cases, fuel and logistics may also be challenging. Generators will have to run continuously. A “grid back-up” may not be available and this places a premium on reliability.

In these cases, because logistics may be challenging, it may be tempting to use a lighter-duty, more power dense high-speed engine generator. However, high speed engines (1200-1800 RPM) require more maintenance and have to be severely de-rated in order to run continuously. They are also less efficient than medium speed engines.

Medium speed engines (450-900 RPM) are heavier and less power dense. They do not have to be de-rated to run continuously because they are built for base load applications. While the logistics of locating them at difficult sites may be more challenging, once put in place they will run for decades as long as proper maintenance instructions are followed.

Medium speed engines such as the MaK and EMD have been used in countless distributed generation and island power installations worldwide. Typical projects are in the 5-50MW range although some are larger. Fuel options for these units are shown in the following chart.
