Anyone who wants to improve process reliability through increased machine
availability must start at the very beginning – and analyse the compressed air
supply in detail first of all. Particles, water and oil are the natural enemies of
prepared compressed air. They make life difficult for the components and cost
additional energy.

Poorly prepared compressed
air causes faults such as:
• Accelerated wearing of seals
• Oil-fouled valves in the control
section
• Dirty silencers
Possible effects for the user
and the machine:
• Lower machine availability
• Higher energy costs due to
leakages
• Higher maintenance costs
• Shorter component and sys-
tem service life
Proper compressed air
preparation is essential to pre-
vent faults on pneumatic com-
ponents. It extends the service
life of the Festo components
and systems. Fault free func-
tioning of the components re-
duces machine failures and
downtimes, significantly im-
proving process reliability.
4
Why compressed air preparation?
Up to 180 million dirt particles, up to 80 g of water, up to 0.03 mg of oil as well as
lead, cadmium and mercury can all be found in 1m³ of compressed air.

Focus on energy efficiency
Energy-efficient pneumatic ap-
plications can only be imple-
mented with high-quality
compressed air in accordance
with ISO 8573:2010. Optimally
sized intelligent service units
provide clean compressed air
and monitor the consumption
levels in the system. Using the
correct components for distr i -
buting the compressed air can
save a great deal of money.
To take advantage of this, Festo
has a three-part approach to
guarantee top quality com-
pressed air preparation: a com-
prehensive product range,
tailored services and support,
supplemented by a precisely
calculated innovation strategy.

Since 2010, this standard has
been binding for automation in-
volving pneumatics. Therefore,
to ensure that compressed air
preparation complies with the
standard and is energy efficient,
various parameters are essen-
tial.
You should clarify the following
questions in advance:
• How high is the maximum re-
quired flow rate?
• Do all consumers require the
same compressed air quality?
• What compressed air quality
is provided by the compres-
sor?

Compressed air quality under ISO 8573-1:2010
ISO 8573 is the designation for a group of international standards dealing with
the quality – or purity – of compressed air. They represent the key quality re-
quirements for compressed air and specify the maximum amounts of contami-
nants that can be present in the respective classes.
Druckluftaufbereitung_en_V15 30.06.2011 15:53 Seite 6
Direct contact with “non-dry”
foods (e.g. drinks, meat, veg-
etables etc.)
The compressed air is used for
transporting or mixing, or in
general production of the food.
It thus comes into direct contact
with the foodstuff.
In packaging machines
The compressed air comes into
direct contact with the materials
in which the foodstuffs will later
be packaged. The packaging
material thus becomes part of
the food zone. The following
compressed air quality classifi-
cations in accordance with
DIN ISO 8573-1 apply to both of
these cases:
Particles = Class 1
Water = Class 4
Oil = Class 1
Direct contact with dry foods
The compressed air is used for
transporting or mixing, or in
general production of the food.
It thus comes into direct contact
with the foodstuff. Increased re-
quirements apply in this case
since air humidity plays an im-
portant role here.
The following compressed air
quality classifications in accor-
dance with ISO 8573-1 apply in
this case:
Particles = Class 1
Water = Class 2
Oil = Class 1
Compliance with the com-
pressed air quality classes spec-
ified here is hugely important to
ensure the highest possible lev-
els of food safety and to protect
consumer health.
7
Pure enjoyment
Hygiene is a critical factor in the food and packaging industry – hardly surpris-
ing, as pure enjoyment depends on the ultimate in compressed air preparation.
As a result, the following applications have the highest requirements for the
compressed air quality:
Pure coffee enjoy-
ment – premium
quality in the cup
demands ab-
solutely clean
compressed air.

Clearly classified: Compressed air quality at Festo
For which applications are which compressed air quality
classes required – and which products are the right ones?
The table contains recommendations from the experts
at Festo, based on the limit values specified in ISO
8573-1:2010.
Designation under ISO 8573-1: [Particles:Water:Oil]The class that can be attained by compressed air prepa-ration depends on the quality of the compressed air afterthe compressor. The specifications apply to typical com-pressed air networks and make no claim of complete-ness.1) Significantly better classes are also possible with ap-
propriate air preparation after the compressor.
2) Pipe systems can increase the particle content of the com-pressed air (chips, rust ...), while liquid oil can be concentratedin certain paths of the compressed air distribution system. Spec-ifications apply at normal room temperature. If parts of the com-pressed air network are subjected to lower temperatures, themoisture class must be selected to ensure that the pressure dewpoint is 10°C below the minimum expected temperature.

Your choice: Metal or polymer
The D series service units are available in two designs: sturdy metal for standard applica-
tions and basic functions for decentralised preparation. Or polymer for reliable com-
pressed air preparation in non-critical environments, e.g. on moving machine components,
where a low weight is required. The polymer series is also the perfect entry-level model,
where flow rates of up to 1,200 Nl/min are required. Its core functions – made up of a
pressure regulator, filter regulator, combined filter regulator/lubricator – are compatible
with components from the metal version.

Energy efficiency thanks to sensors
Integrated sensors have a positive impact on
your energy balance and costs.
MS6 with integrated sensors
Diagnostics, preventive maintenance, remote
control and monitoring of pressure, flow rate
and differential pressure: These are the new
possibilities provided by the integrated
sensors.
The benefits to you:
• Reduced downtimes
• Minimised energy consumption
• Cost control due to consumption
measurements
• Easy monitoring of process parameters
• Planned maintenance intervals
Flow sensor SFAM
and MS
Integration into MS with no ad-
ditional installation work. The
two complement one another.
Characteristics: Highly dynamic
starting point of 1%, extremely
precise thanks to huge measur-
ing range of up to 15,000 l/min
for absolute flow rate informa-
tion with threshold values, and
very convenient adjustment of
the switching points.
18
Forward-looking: Integrated sensors and safety functions
The MS series sets new standards when it comes to enhanced safety, machine
availability and efficient energy usage. The background: The numerous func-
tions you can integrate with no problems.

Filter MS6-LFM-DP
Differential pressure measure-
ment with filter contamination
indicator for preventive mainte-
nance to provide improved com-
pressed air quality and
compliance with ISO guidelines.
This prevents an excessive pres-
sure drop through the filter,
which costs additional energy.
Soft-start/exhaust valve
MS6-SV
Reliable pressurisation and ven-
tilation integrated: The safety
functionality of the MS series
supports users in designing
safe, mainly pneumatic circuits.
The soft-start/quick exhaust
valve MS6-SV provides maxi-
mum safety for operators and
machinery in case of sudden
emergency stops in safety-criti-
cal areas of the system, thanks
to its fast and reliable exhaust
function.
The exhausting capacity is up
to 9,000 l/min (from port 2 to
port 3).
IFA certification in compliance
with DIN EN ISO 13849-1,
Category 4 Performance Level e.
Documented so that you can be
absolutely certain.

If you choose a ready to install
module instead of individual
components, you can save your-
self lots of work: For example,
selecting 27 items from the cat-
alogue, ordering them, storing
them, assembling the 27 parts,
integrating them into the sys-
tem and documenting the whole
process. These are just some of
the time and cost intensive ac-
tivities involved.
The advantages of “all inclusive”
– with pre-assembled modules
• Engineering know-how from
Festo specialists
• Order the entire system with
a single ID number
• Reduced logistics costs
• Delivery of a single item on
one date
• Fully assembled and tested
system
• Warranty on components
and function
20
Multiplying the advantages: With pre-assembled modules
Pre-assembled modules reduce purchasing costs, increase process reliability
and bring you added productivity. They save you time and money – up to 50%.
