Religion & Theology The core message of all Biblical texts – in one volume

Egbert Ballhorn et al. (Eds.) 73 Overtures [73 Ouvertüren] Book beginnings in the Bible and their message Gütersloher Verlagshaus 704 pages October 2018

Egbert Ballhorn has a PhD in theology and is professor for the Old Testament at the Technical University in Dortmund. He is the vice-president of the Katholisches Bibelwerk e.V. Georg Steins has a PhD in theology and is professor for the Old Testament at Osnabrück University. He developed the internatio-nally acclaimed programme of a "canonical-intertextual reading of the Bible". Regina Wildgruber has a PhD in theology and is a bible scholar and universal church delegate in the diocese of Osnabrück. Uta Zwingenberger has a PhD in theology and is a bible scholar.

The beginning of a book can be tricky! If it is good the reader is its prey, for once caught up in the first pages we cannot put the book down. What is true of modern literature also holds true of the books of the Bible: their beginnings have the potential to make the entire scripture accessible.

Fifty notable bible scholars have opened up this potential. Starting off with the beginnings of the books, this volume offers vivid insights into all the 73 books of the Bible. Thus the central themes of the biblical canon are made clear and comprehensible. This is a work that opens the Bible to us, not only as a religious treasure trove but also as a unique part of our cultural heritage.

Religion & Theology Small children, big questions

Albert Biesinger / Helga Kohler-Spiegel / Simone Hiller Why Do We Have Sundays Off? [Warum haben wir sonntags frei?] Let's find out about religious festivals Children ask and experts answer Kösel 160 pages 4c throughout, with ca. 50 illustrations November 2018

Albert Biesinger, born in 1948, is a professor of religious studies at the University of Tübingen. Much in demand as a speaker, he has written successful spiritual and religious-education books. www.familienkatechese.de Helga Kohler-Spiegel, born in 1962, is a professor of religious studies and holds an executive position at the Office for Catechesis and Religious Education in St. Gallen, Switzerland. In addition, she works as a psychotherapist in her own paediatric practice. Simone Hiller, born in 1983, is a research assistant for the chair of Religious Studies at the University of Tübingen.

The best questions are asked by children, often putting grownups into quite a spot. What does the Holy Spirit look like? Why is Jesus's Mummy so important? And why did Jesus have to go up into heaven when he had already been brought back to life?

In the new volume of the popular series with children's questions the focus is on religious festivals. 17 experts answer questions even many adults have probably wondered about: vividly written, thought-provoking and wonderfully illustrated.

Religion & Theology The Bonhoeffer family in a new light

Jutta Koslowski (Ed.) From the Life of the Bonhoeffer Family [Aus dem Leben der Familie Bonhoeffer] The records and notes of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's youngest sister Gütersloher Verlagshaus 992 pages With a 16-page image section October 2018

Jutta Koslowski, born in 1968, is a Protestant pastor and lecturer in ecumenical theology and interreligious dialogue at the Ludwigs-burg University of Educa-tion. She has published several books on these topics. She is also a mem-ber of the International Bonhoeffer Society.

There are still new aspects of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life to be discovered, more than seventy years after his death, as can be read in the memoires of his youngest sister, Susanne Dreß: her biography covers their childhood during the German empire, World War I and up to the Nazi regime, followed by the period of post-war rebuilding, and it reflects the tremendous changes that took place in this period. Her style of writing is unique and vivid, and she paints a clear picture of the family Dietrich Bonhoeffer came from. Thus the familiar image is given many new and unknown facets. A document of major historical value that makes for gripping reading.

"Two things were important for me: absolute honesty without making a heroic epic of it." Susanne Dreß

Religion & Theology Humour is a manifestation of religion

Willibert Pauels Laughing, Suffering, Love of Life [Lachen, Leiden, Lust am Leben] The liberating power of religion Gütersloher Verlagshaus 224 pages September 2018

Willibert Pauels, born in 1954, studied catholic theology and worked as a deacon until 2006. In 2013 he revealed that he had been suffering from depression for years. He says that with medical support and medication he has it under control.

When faced by the hypothesis of many atheists that educated people must be sick in the head to still believe in God, Willibert Pauels wonders, "Am I crazy? Why can't I stop believing in God?" This is the question he examines in Laughing, Suffering, Love of Life. The main focus is on the really big questions like: "Does God exists? If so why does He allow all the suffering in the world? What about death?"

Pauels addresses these issues in his familiar easygoing way. He is less concerned with studies, statistics and stringent arguments, but rather with what has had a hold of him since his childhood: the experience of a longing for God, knowledge of the feeling that God is close and also that God is distant.

Religion & Theology Personal experiences of a Zeit journalist

Tillmann Prüfer Heaven Knows. Does It? [Weiß der Himmel ...?] How I stumbled over the issue of life and death and was suddenly sitting in church Gütersloher Verlagshaus 192 pages October 2018

Tillmann Prüfer, born in 1974, is one of the chief editors of Zeit magazine. He has been awarded several journalism prizes and written a number of bestselling books.

Tillmann Prüfer is a noted Zeit journalist who in this book addresses the issues of life, dying, death and meaning. A difficult period in his father-in-law's life involving illness and death caused the convinced atheist to confront the question of faith. Foundations of his previous life begin to totter, he begins to doubt, learns to pray, starts going to church regularly and finally reflects his thoughts in a monastery. This book describes the author's authentic search.

"All of a sudden I was in a situation in which I was in urgent need of faith and optimism."

Gerd Theißen Doctrines [Glaubenssätze] A critical catechism Special edition Gütersloher Verlagshaus 352 pages July 2018 / first published in 2012

Gerd Theißen, born in 1943, is emeritus professor of New Testament theology at the University of Heidelberg. He is seen as one of today's most creative exegetes and, by using a sociological and psychological approach to examine the Biblical tradition, developed a theory regarding early Christianity. His book The Shadow of the Galilean has been unrivalled for more than 30 years as a narrative work on Jesus.

These dogmas are different: in the form of questions and answers, sometimes reflectively, sometimes metaphorically, sometimes poetically the meditative texts trace the three basic articles of faith – God, Christ, Holy Spirit. The doctrines are brief, easy to understand and inspirational and they invite readers to discover a biblically based critical faith in the freedom of Protestantism.

A profound and authentic textbook about the major issues of life.

Meditation & Buddhism Trailblazer for Zen in the West

Hugo M. Enomiya-Lassalle My Path to Zen [Mein Weg zum Zen] Kösel 180 pages With 70 b/w illustrations October 2018

Hugo M. Enomiya-Lassalle, born in 1898, was a Jesuit priest and Zen master. He went to Japan in 1929 and administrated the Jesuit building of the catholic Sophia University and championed social issues. Lassalle lived in Hiroshima and survived the nuclear bomb thrown onto the city. He became a Japanese citizen under the name Makibi Enomiya. His life and works have been a lasting source of inspiration for Willigis Jäger, Niklaus Brantschen and others.

In the 1950s, Jesuit Hugo M. Enomiya-Lassalle, who lived in Japan for many years, began to mediate and build a bridge between Christian and Buddhist spirituality.

When he died at the age of almost 92 in 1990, he left behind not only more than 4,000 students but also writings that helped Zen meditation to become greatly popular in the West.

Meditation & Buddhism How love becomes strong through meditation

Alexander Poraj AlOne [AllEin] Zen or overcoming loneliness Kösel 176 pages June 2018

Alexander Poraj, PhD, born in 1964, studied Catholic theology in Freiburg and in Granada, Spain. A Zen master of the Zen lineage "Empty Cloud" and "Cloud of Unknowing – contempla-tion lineage of Willigis Jäger", he is spiritual leader of the Benediktushof and chairman of the "Occidental-Oriental Wisdom – Willigis Jäger Foundation".

Very often, the state of being in love is of but short duration. There are disappointments that often lead to separation. If, however, you can appreciate and enjoy the moment you will find happiness that is largely independent of external circumstances, independent also of your partner.

Learning this particular experience is part of Zen meditation. Over and over again people meditating are conscious of this feeling of happiness and trust in the gift of the fullness of the moment. This is solace and a new opportunity for love relationships.
