I’ve always been fascinated by aircraft, and closely affiliated with the Royal Air Force, so after completing an Industrial Placement (IP) with BAE Systems, I was really pleased they wanted to sponsor me through the final two years of my degree. I studied a Masters in Systems Engineering and have now joined the GDF scheme.

What’s most satisfying about my role is being able to apply what I learned at university to real world scenarios. As an undergraduate on the IP, I worked on a prototype aircraft; sometimes working long hours, but I loved every minute. I was lucky enough to be invited to the first flight of the aircraft later that year; an amazing experience that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Since joining the GDF, I’ve experienced a number of different working environments. For example, I started in a rig placement where there was a relaxed atmosphere and work was very varied. Then, in my export placement, the workflow was faster and more changeable. However, the one thing that is constant is that there’s a real feeling of people pulling together to achieve a final goal.

BAE Systems is held in high regard in the industry and the scheme is giving me the personal and professional development I’m aiming for. The availability of travel, flexible working hours and a decent salary definitely don’t hurt either. Even with early shift starts, I wake up in the morning keen to get into work. How many places can offer you that?

During university I did a placement year here at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence and later re-joined after graduating. I have always had an interest in business which developed further during my degree and wanted to be involved with consulting work, so joining BAE Systems suited my aspirations.

During my time in the organisation I have been involved with various roles (including roles I hadn’t previously considered) which has allowed me

to build a network of contacts and appreciate how the organisation and market work, as well as help me to discover where I want to take my career. My current role is high pressured but rewarding; I have responsibility for numerous project processes and documentations and seek improvements wherever possible. I work alongside senior stakeholders on client site and each day is different to the last.

BAE Systems is a CIMA Premier Partner, our CIMA training is delivered through BPP, a leading training provider, and we offer a comprehensive study package.

After successfully completing the first three years of the scheme and achieving the CIMA qualification, the FLDP continues with a two-year senior accountancy position, offering managerial experience, thus helping you to develop the skills you will require to move into a leadership role within our dynamic finance arena at the end of the five-year programme.

After graduating with an Economics degree, I took two years off to travel the world before joining the FLDP.

BAE Systems’ FLDP stood out for a number of reasons. It provided excellent experience across several areas of finance, the opportunity to work in multiple locations, plus great career prospects within the company. I was also really impressed by the study package and am proud to have completed my CIMA exams while fulfilling my daily responsibilities.

In fact, I’ve learned about so much more than just finance. The most challenging aspects have been time and deadline management; prioritising my monthly workload and becoming more efficient so that I can effectively perform the ad hoc tasks that pop up. I’m also developing great people skills, because working in a company as diverse

as BAE Systems means working with a variety of people. Learning how to get on and successfully work with everyone is both challenging and very rewarding.

As part of a multinational company at the forefront of its industry, the FLDP has genuinely allowed me to contribute to solutions for real world problems and I feel like I add genuine value to the business. Most notable is that I’ve been the Project Accountant for numerous urgent operational requirements to provide the MOD with upgrades to existing products, which help our soldiers on the ground.

It’s really inspiring and satisfying to be able to take on these responsibilities. People see my ambition and are willing to help me reach my goals. I consider every day as preparation for my future at BAE Systems.

Sigma Leadership Programme (Sigma)

The Sigma Leadership Programme is our three-year fast-track programme packed full of broad and deep experiences – across multiple business areas – that help aspiring leaders to succeed.

There are two streams within the Sigma programme – business and engineering. Each stream is tailored to enable you to develop the core skills and behaviours to be a business or engineering leader of the future.

This unique programme has only a few places available each year, which is why we carefully consider who we recruit; we need individuals with the potential to lead our company into tomorrow. That means you’ll need to be able to build strong relationships with people quickly, working collaboratively to get the most effective results.

The Sigma Leadership Programme offers no blueprint or structured path to follow, so you’ll also need to be driven and self-motivated to succeed.

Arranging your own roles, which will typically last between 6–12 months, you might find yourself undertaking an international assignment, or working at one of our customer sites. Through these hands-on, intensive secondments to different businesses and projects you’ll rapidly gain a diverse range of experience, knowledge and skills. You’ll also have accountability and responsibility to make a difference to our businesses.

Upon completion of the Sigma Leadership Programme, you’ll be expected to take on a substantive role at an executive level.

BAE Systems is the largest defence contractor in the UK and has a truly global footprint. That’s why, after obtaining a degree in Natural Sciences and an MSc in Oceanography, I joined the GDF in a Project Management role. A year later, I applied to the Sigma Leadership Programme and began my first Business Sigma role.

On Sigma, I’ve worked with teams in the US, Australia and UK understanding how to drive affordability on the biggest air defence programme in the world, and worked within our procurement team to leverage our economies of scale. Both our products and services are fascinating in terms of the scale and capability required to deliver them successfully.

The company also supports getting involved with local communities so last year I was closely involved with running an annual inter-school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) competition in Cumbria. The event was a great success, praised by both employees and locals.

I’m enjoying Sigma for the challenges, which combined with the freedom to move around the different UK businesses, undertake an international placement and experience a truly diverse range of projects really enable rapid development.

Also, there is support from managers, senior mentors and colleagues, which means there’s a lot of opportunity to reach my career goals.

Page 33: remarkable people doing work that matters - BAE Systems€¦ · Fast fact Our vision is to be the premier global defence, aerospace and security company At BAE Systems, we provide

I’m currently studying Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology and Genetics). I applied to do a 12-month Industrial Placement, between the 2nd and 3rd year of my degree, to learn about and practise Supply Chain at BAE Systems Naval Ships. When BAE Systems offered me this placement, I was ecstatic, especially considering how many people applied, and what a great opportunity I had lying ahead of me.

The Supply Chain Placement involves working across an array of different stakeholders to broaden my knowledge as a whole and to see the wider picture. Specifically, my placement involves working in four different areas, for three months each, which include working in, and with, Type 26 Programme Supply Chain, Operations, Queen Elizabeth Carrier and Supply Chain Function. This means that I have the chance to be mobile, meet more people and further my experience and learning, whether working in an office or on foot at one of the sites. Throughout my current Supply Chain Placement, I have been given challenging

tasks, such as aiding in the progression of tender processes which will result in awarding contracts to suppliers, and also generating innovative ideas that have future impacts on the way BAE Systems works, in order to increase effectiveness and efficiency. The parts I enjoy most about my placement and working at BAE Systems are that every day is different, which requires me to be agile, and that there are copious opportunities.

Everybody I have met has been friendly, welcoming and happy to help, which is great, as I didn’t know anybody in Glasgow before I moved for the job. My Line Manager and Placement Manager provide constant support and frequently arrange 1:1 meetings, to ensure that I am getting what I want out of the placement, which they are very flexible around. I exponentially learn more every day, from the complications of Supply Chain to everyday computer skills, where I continue to develop and learn new competencies that I will be able to utilise throughout my future. I believe there is no limit to my learning at BAE Systems.
