Unfortunately in your area the blue recycling bin contains around

of non-recyclable items, referred to as contamination(i.e the wrong thing in the wrong bin)Which could result in the whole load collected in your recycling truck being rejected and not recycled

20%Other areas in Nottinghamshire have achieved less than

5%of contamination in their recycling bins, so we need your help to assist the good work your neighbours are doing to reduce the levels in your area to less than 5% and ensure the right items are in your recycling bin.

in your areaThe project

Recyclable items are collected from your home by your local council and taken to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). They are then sorted by a mix of machines and people and taken to reprocessors to become something new.

This guide has been created to help you reduce the amount of wrong items (contamination) that accidentally go into your recycling bin.

7 GlassIn some areas, these are separately collected by your local council. Otherwise, they can be taken to your local Recycling Centre or ‘bring’ sites found at some local supermarkets.

7 Old toysThe size, shape and material these are made from can cause problems during the sorting process. If there’s still life in them consider donating them to charity or take them to your local Recycling Centre.

7 NappiesDisposable nappies and sanitary waste is not recyclable at all and need to go into the general waste rubbish bin. If you’d like an alternative try ‘real nappies’.

7 FoodFood is a problem as it spreads easily and can contaminate a whole load of recyclables. See the Love Food Hate Waste website for information on how to reduce food waste.

7 Plastic trays e.g. meat trays, fruit punnets and ready meal traysThese are difficult to recycle because of the type and colour of plastic used and often because they are contaminated with food. You can limit the amount of plastic trays that you throw away by choosing items with minimal packaging.

7 General rubbish such as crisp packets, cling film, plant pots, coat hangers, polystyrene. To find out what to do with a range of waste items please visit the waste A-Z on the waste pages of the Nottinghamshire County Council website.

By putting wrong items into your bin, it can affect the other items in the recycling load collected, which can mean that the good work of all your neighbours could be ruined and the whole load could go to general waste rather than recycling.

What is contamination?

7 Foil and foil traysIf foil and foil trays can’t be reused, please put them in your general waste bin. Even if foil items are rinsed, it is difficult to remove all food residues and these can contaminate or ‘spoil’ other recyclable materials, especially paper.

7 TextilesThe Materials Recovery Facility is not able to sort clothes and textiles but these can be reused and recycled at charity shops and Recycling Centres.
