Discovering an Island
TheislandLaGraciosaispartoftheNatureReserveChinijoArchipelago(declaredin1986),auniquetreasureoftheCanarianislandsduetoitsnaturalandculturalwealth.In1995theMarineReserveofthefishingareaofLaGraciosaanditsisletsofthenorthofLanzarotewasestablished.FurthermoreLaGraciosaispartoftheBiosphereReservesofLanzarote.
Withthisformofprotectionandrulesweendeavourtoconservethenatureandcultureofthisislandwithinthesocioeconomicdevelopment,notonlyforitsinhabitantsbutalsofortheenjoymentofmanytouristswhovisiteveryyear.
TheIndependentOrganisationofNatureReserves,owneroftheislandLaGraciosawiththeexceptionofitsurbancentres,watchesovertheconservationandtheintegrityoftheisland,joiningforceswithalltheotheradministrativeunits.Thisrequiresthecollaborationofallparts.
The Chinijo Archipelago and the Island La Graciosa
LaGraciosawasuninhabiteduntiltheendofthe19thcentury,althoughGreeks,Phoenicians,Romans,Arabs,Genoeseandpiratesreachedthecoasts.Thefirstcolonistsettleddownwhenasaltedfishfactorywasbuilt.FromthismomenttheinhabitantsofLaGraciosahavesurvivedthehardlivingconditionsofanislandwithoutdrinkingwater,strongwinds,difficultlandtocultivateandisolationfromtradecentres.Duringmanyyearsartisanfishingwastheprincipalactivityofitspeople,theyhadtocross“ElRio”(narrowstraitbetweenLaGraciosaandLanzarote)toselltheirfishandgetdrinkingwaterandotherfood.
Theremainingconstructionssuchasthewells,millsandcisternstocollectwaterorthespecialplacesforfishdryingareatestamentofthesehardlivingconditions.
Afterimprovementoflivingconditions,LaGraciosahasnowturnedintoauniquetouristdestinationandsourceofwealth,howeverthiscouldalsobeitsprincipalthreat.Respectingitsnaturalenvironment,thetraditionalactivitiesanditspopularcultureallowstheislandtoremaintheparadiseweknow.
La Graciosa and its people
TheislandLaGraciosa,withalmost27km²,isthebiggestandonlyinhabitedislandintheChinijoArchipelago.Anislandwithitsvolcaniclandscape,sprinkingofsandduneswhichcolourthelandinochreandred.Herewehaveanenormousbiologicalwealthwithexclusivespeciesoftheisland,forexampletheJopoofLaGraciosa,uniquetothisarea.FurthermoreotherthreatenedandprotectedspeciesliketheCanaryHoubaraBustardortheLizardofHaríaensurethatLaGraciosaisaspecialenclaveofgreatvariety,worthyofconservation.
Variousfactors,suchasthewatertemperature,theunderwaterrelief,rockyandroughareas,alongwiththegreatamountofnutrientshelptocreatealargenumberofdifferingatmospheres.Thevaryinghabitatspermitthegrowthofcountlessspeciesofmarinewildlife,manyofwhicharerareintherestoftheCanaryIslands.(Theseincludemarinerosemary,theblackmeagre,etc.).

Discovering an Island
TheislandLaGraciosaispartoftheNatureReserveChinijo Archipelago (declared in 1986), a uniquetreasureoftheCanarianislandsduetoitsnaturalandcultural wealth. In 1995 the Marine Reserve of thefishingareaofLaGraciosaanditsisletsofthenorthofLanzarotewasestablished.FurthermoreLaGraciosaispartoftheBiosphereReservesofLanzarote.
With this formofprotectionand rulesweendeavourtoconservethenatureandcultureofthisislandwithinthe socioeconomic development, not only for itsinhabitantsbutalsofortheenjoymentofmanytouristswhovisiteveryyear.
TheIndependentOrganisationofNatureReserves,owneroftheislandLaGraciosawiththe exception of its urban centres,watches over the conservation and the integrityoftheisland,joiningforceswithalltheotheradministrativeunits.Thisrequiresthecollaborationofallparts.
The Chinijo Archipelago and the Island La Graciosa

After improvement of living conditions, La Graciosa hasnow turned into a unique tourist destination and sourceofwealth,howeverthiscouldalsobeitsprincipalthreat.Respectingitsnaturalenvironment,thetraditionalactivitiesand its popular culture allows the island to remain theparadiseweknow.
La Graciosa and its people
TheislandLaGraciosa,withalmost27km²,isthebiggestand only inhabited island in the ChinijoArchipelago. Various factors, such as the water temperature, theunderwater relief, rockyandroughareas,alongwiththegreatamountofnutrientshelp tocreatea largenumberofdifferingatmospheres.Thevaryinghabitatspermitthegrowth of countless species of marine wildlife, many ofwhich are rare in the rest of the Canary Islands. (Theseincludemarinerosemary,theblackmeagre,etc.).

Onlyauthorizedmotor-operated vehicles andbicycles can drive onthe permitted roads.The maximum allowedspeedis30km/h.
Free diving is onlyallowedwithpermissionintheindicatedareas.Remember thatunderwater fishing isnotallowed.
Avoid loud noises andnoisy activities as thesedisturb the calmness oftheanimals,othervisitorsandtheinhabitantsofLaGraciosa.
