The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels & Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture - I can see clearly now Certain events leave us with the sensation of scales falling from our eyes. May-be it’s a directed retreat or parish mission that shatters our complacency and brings us to tears. Or maybe it’s just life happening to us in all of its raw pow-er—in birth, loss, love, or pain—that promotes a clearer value of what’s really important. All in a moment, we sense what we need to do, or stop doing, to be true to what’s real. When those hours arrive, pay attention! Jesus is calling, a way is opening, and all that’s required is to say “yes.” Bring A Friend Sunday This weekend, October 27/28, we celebrate Bring A Friend Sunday. We wel-come all you visitors who are joining us today for our celebrations and invite everybody for a fellowship after mass. Let us journey together! Happy Sunday! All Saints/All Souls On the feast of All Saints, Nov. 1st, we honored all those great champions of faith who gave us such a wonderful example of how to live and love. Please join us for Masses this Thursday at 7:45am and 7pm. On the feast of All Souls, which this year falls on Friday, Nov. 2nd, we will re-member all our deceased loved ones. A special All Souls Mass will be cele-brated in the evening at 7pm. At this Mass we will remember all those who were buried from St. Francis in the past year. Who is in your heart? Who do you remember? Let your sainthood shine! Genesis says people are made in the image and likeness of God. The gospels say to see Jesus in one another. In other words, we are more like God than we might think. We can see God, not completely, but a lot, in human beings. That’s what saints, whom the church celebrates this week, do: They show us how to be close to God, how to be holy. They help us to see how God is like us and we are like God—and call us to be more like God, as they were. Answer that call. Imitate the saints. You can be one, too! RCIA Are you or someone you know interested in becoming Catholic? Are you curi-ous about our faith or missing sacraments? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults learn and join the Catholic Church. Please call the office (708-460-0042) for more information, as we begin our program later in September. Grand Raffle This weekend we continue selling our Grand Raffle tickets. We have great priz-es ($50,000) and at the same time this is a wonderful way of supporting our parish. Please check the bulletin for more details and buy a ticket in the narthex or at the office during the week. ONLY ONE MORE WEEK LEFT!

Saint Peregrine was healed of a can-cerous ulcer on his leg which was considered beyond saving. The fame of this event in 1325 spread rapidly round the western Church. Christians, and especially the sick, began to in-voke his name and seek his interces-sion for the relief of their suffering and even for a cure from sickness. The canonization of St. Peregrine in 1726 increased people’s devotion to him which spread to the universal Church. Our no-vena to St. Peregrine began 9/17 and will be held for 9 Mondays at 7 pm. All parishioners are wel-come to participate. St. Peregrine is the patron saint for persons suffering from illnesses of all types in particular cancer.

the pictures we were pro-vided of the house, it did-n’t look like a lot, but boy were we surprised when we pulled in on the first day! On each side, in-cluding the front porch railing and screened-in porch of the backyard, the siding and wood was cracked and chipped. I definitely felt God test-ing us because the weather was on and off with rain that week, so we had to paint what we could

quickly. In addition, the house was built into the side of a hill, so spot-ting someone on a lad-der was nerve wrack-ing! But with patience, extra help from another team, and lots of drop cloths, the house was completed by the last work day. After returning to the high school each day, my free time was spent either passed out on my air mattress or play-ing uno with the youth group. Program was always a fun time because of the games and activities the CHWC staff put together. At the end of program each night they also played a vid-eo of what each group accomplished at their worksites that day. This year’s theme was echo-ing God’s love for oth-ers. It was clear to see God’s love echoed not only in the videos of the hardworking groups, but everywhere at Catholic Heart. You are surrounded by so many people who are there for the sole purpose of spreading His love, which makes the whole experience so special. I’m blessed to have gone on this trip, and can’t wait until next year!

Aside from the seeming-ly end-less car ride, the mission trip this

year was a blast. This was my second year doing the trip, and I was excited to see how Catholic Heart changed around the fun in program and other activities. Last summer I played with little kids at a boys and girls club, so I de-cided to take on a new challenge this year. My group was assigned the job of painting the whole exterior of a family’s house. THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord's kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God's love and care for us. "Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoic-ing, / carrying their sheaves" (Psalm 126:5-6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great ban-quet of God. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Like the ads placed in grocery store windows advertising sales, we had such signs placed in our windows to an-nounce our presence and the opening day. We also had some publicity in the local papers. I invited family and friends; I was afraid the storefront might be empty! There was one Mass on Saturday and one on Sunday; with a re-spectable number at each. In the Niehaus Room, there are signa-tures of most of those who were present at the first Masses. I judged the opening as a success because people returned the next weekend! One regret – the first Mass was videoed; but that tape has now been lost to history. The space had to be furnished. The liturgi-cal items were taken

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

I write this article Octo-ber 19th for the October 28th bulletin. I am a week late because last week, the 20th and 21st of October, were the dates of our first Masses in the storefront. As I have written earlier, that “opening weekend” was one of excitement and anxiety. I was anxious about who might attend. There had been limited publicity – a few weeks prior I spoke at all the Masses at St. Michael’s and St. Eliza-beth Seton. I invited all present at the Masses, but particularly those within our boundaries, to become a part of the new parish; at least come and see. I placed information in their bulle-tins. I targeted these parishes because these were the parishes the Archdio-cese directed their boundaries were to be changed. Of course, all parishioners were grand-fathered into their cur-rent parish.

from a warehouse that the Archdiocese had which contained items from church that had closed. A personal thought- the chairs we had to pur-chase. I wanted the space to have an inviting atmosphere. I took a chance with the chairs. Rather than traditional metal folding chairs, I went to the Mart and se-lected the turquoise chairs. I thought they provided a welcome and temporary look – made a storefront look good. Those chairs are still in our building – they still look good. I don’t want to be wasteful, but I won’t be disappointed, after all these years, when they finally wear out. It is amazing to me how quickly these years have passed. We have been blessed and now 28 years later we are a thriving parish communi-ty.

soul. I was inspired and encouraged by their strength and faith. CRHP was an opportuni-ty for me to grow in my relationship with God and others. Through CRHP, I experienced a different level of “knowing” the women of St. Francis of Assisi Par-ish. I cherish the rela-tionships and bonds I have formed with the women of CRHP, each a blessing in my life and hold a special place in my heart.

My name is Ann Carroll and I would like to share my reflection of CRHP (Christ Renews His Par-ish). Since becoming a parishioner at St. Fran-cis of Assisi Parish in 1995, I have always been involved, especial-ly because getting in-volved was a way to get to “know” people. I was asked, numerous times, to attend CRHP and continuously re-sponded, no! FEAR of the unknown and ex-tending myself beyond my comfort zone, as well as excuses stopped me. Until I opened my heart to the “nudging” of God and witnessed the rela-tionships and bonds of friendship among the women of CRHP, did I

commit and respond YES to attending CRHP. If you, like me, think there is something missing in your life, I would strongly encour-age you to take a chance, step out of your comfort zone and consider attending CRHP. During the 30 Hour CRHP Experi-ence, women give wit-ness of the importance of God in their every-day life and how God has touched their lives, their very heart and

One disappointment over the years is a de-cline in attendance. Some parishioners who were active simply seem to drop off the radar. This is a problem not

unique to St. Francis. In the next weeks, I will offer some thoughts. I did receive a few sug-gestions about future articles. They require

some reflection; but I do plan to use them. Again, any thoughts for future reflections. Please email me [email protected].

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first repre-sentative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today's Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver

Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gal-lows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contem-plative prayer and "spiritual hospitality" in the Benedictine tradition.

Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the commu-nity in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 mar-tyrs. A Web site visit is possible at www.tyburnconvent.org.uk.
