As long as I can remember I have loved horses, there soft coat their beautiful eyes & the

amazing stuff they can teach us about patience, love, respect and their amazing ability to

make us feel like we have the best friend ever! Snakevalley was where I was born & lived

with my 6 sisters & mum & dad, we had a couple of horses which we all shared, Tessy was

a black shetland with an attitude 5 times her size. Once we could catch her she was a

great pony to do anything with. Dad would have to catch her for us usually, as she would

charge at us & totally had us bluffed as we would head for the nearest fence & do the stop

drop & roll under the fence to get away from her! We moved out to Trawalla & had quite

a few more horses which we would ride from morning till late afternoon always bareback

as we never had a saddle, let alone a helmet & sometimes not even a bridle on our welsh

mountain pony called paleface. We trained her to turn when we would put up our right

hand for her to turn left & left hand to turn right & stop well just pulled a bit of mane,

simple really. We broke all our horses in that we bred which was always fun & they were

sold as good kids ponies. When I was about 10 dad had sent my black mare off to be

broken in as he bought her from the sales & he thought she was a bit to much for us to do.

The guy was going to keep her colt foal as payment for breaking her.Unfortunately my

beautiful mare died from colic while at the breakers. Approx 12 months later he sent the

colt back for me to have. Unfortunately he hadn't been handled so I had a terrified young

horse to deal with, but didn't take long to quieten him down & get him ready for me to

ride. The most satisfying thing you can ever do is to take an unhandled horse & turn them

into your best mate! Sadly we moved into Ballarat 2 yrs after & we had to sell all our

horses. I was the saddest girl in the world &was always looking for somewhere to be able

to keep a horse. Mum & dad new how much I wanted a horse so they found a paddock &

without me knowing went to the market & bought me a horse. I was so happy even

though she was a bit thin & had cuts & scratches on her legs from the truck. We fixed her

up & my friend Jacquie James & I would ride our horses everywhere, up Albert street,

even up Sturt street & around the lake . Such an amazing fun time! Until someone cut the

lock on her gate one night & let her out & she got hit by a car! I had a couple more horses

after her & then was busy with boys & work so no more horses for a quite a few years. My

next horse was when I was married & had my daughter & I went to the market one day &

came home with an appy mare another great horse she turned out to be. Then we moved

out to Smythes about 20 yrs ago & have not been without a horse since! I have had

quarter horses, thoroughbreds, Arabs & x breds they are all wonderful in there own way &

you can learn so much from each of them. I had never been to pony club so when the

riding club was being discussed I was one of heaps of people to be at the first meeting to

get it off the ground. I'm still a very happy member of the club & have learnt new ideas of

training from some great instructors. I have met some amazing people who share the

same interests. (riding horses, drinking wine & lots of laughs)!! Everything from ground

work to training under saddle, & bush riding, jumping competing is all great fun & I even

really enjoy massaging to make them happy horses so we can be a happy partnership.

Horses are an addiction of the best kind!!!

How to set up yourself to be successful at competitions –

Marianne Crawford

I was an expert at self-sabotage at competitions. They were so important to me and such a big deal I would make

myself ill with nerves. It was only a few years ago that I took on a better approach and now can compete with

happiness and joy.

1. Unless you are at ease at competitions, don’t compete until you and the horse are ready. If you need to

go to competitions to socialise, do just that! Go to the competition, socialise, ride around, pretend you are

going to compete, but don’t compete. Fortunately the HRCAV has not banned non competing riders at

their competitions as the EA has done. Just don’t get in the road of warming up and competing riders. If

your horse misbehaves, then move away immediately.

2. Ensure your horse will load at least a week before. Do all of you loading practice weeks or months before

you need to load on the day.

3. Prepack and pre plan all details possible the night before. If you need to check off things on a list then do

that. Don’t have a big to-do list on the day of the competition. Ensure you have precise directions if it is a

venue new to you.

4. Have a competition routine that suits your needs. If you plan to help others, ie plait, call tests ensure that

if they run late, that helping them will not make you late for what you need to do.

5. If possible walk your horse in hand around their arena and warm up area before tests start or during big

breaks. Take the newness out of the situation before you get in the saddle.

6. Timing the warm-up to perfection never happens, there are too many variables for which you can’t

manage! But be aware of all that you can fix. Is the ring running early or late? Plan for only slightly more

time than what you think you will need.

7. Ensure you are in charge of yourself before you mount. Take all of the doubts out of your mind. You are

there to ride, this is something that you do several times a week, it is just at a different venue. Ride to

show off what you do at home, forget about what others could think, it is your ride!

8. Take charge of your horse before, during mounting and all riding. Horses are herd animals and need a

strong leader. You must be that strong leader, if you can’t be their strong leader you aren’t ready to

compete.

9. Give your horse confidence by asking him to do things he can do. Constantly ask him to move forward,

stop, go, sideways, turn, circle. Don’t just ride laps hoping to lull him into complacency, make him

respectful and responsive to all of your aids. You don’t want a dull, relaxed horse, you want a respectful,

obedient horse… or do you?

10. So, how do you train your horse at home? Do you train him to be a dull, relaxed horse, or do you want a

respectful, obedient horse? This topic will be the next instalment.

Marianne has just retired from teaching at the University and is now available to teach fulltime atyour venue or her arena.

Have you ever heard of a horse with HEAD SHAKING SYNDROME,

Well I never did until I bought Hercules - OCT 2013.

Hercules had a slow start at my place for a few reasons , I did not have a saddle to fit him , he would not float easily, he was

very sore and needed a chiro asap. All these things took time , so I let him settle in to the diet change as well as getting use to

the 2 other horses we had and just did ground work with him .I had Max to ride in the mean time, so I was not fussed ,Herc

was young and there was lots of time to ride . First was the chiro who came to my place , then some floating training. Now I

can go to the saddle fitter and find a saddle, now we are on the way, or so I thought . I noticed that when I rode Hercules that

he pulled the reins out of my hands all the time .So of to the trainers for a few weeks to see if it was just a manners issue.

The first 6 months went slow and we did not get any further than a walk as every time we trotted the head would start , some

days better than others , some days not. So back to a walk and try again , I started looking up head shaking syndrome on the

internet and yes this was what Hercules was doing. Not to the extent of some but yes it was head shaking. I was wondering

what I had got myself in for now , this was going to be my easy horse , a lovely big 17.1hh Clydie cross 6years old open canvas.

He was such a sweetie in all other ways I could not just give up on him. So we just kept working on him with training etc.

Things started to change when I went to a comp with max at Grampians GGG in May 2014 and saw a horse with a nose net on,

I approached the owner and asked about the nose net as I had seen this being used via the internet for H/S. Kerry was very

helpful she answered most of my questions and gave me a bit of encouragement to keep working with Hercules.

Kerry gave me the number for Lucy from Gotcha equine , I looked gotcha equine up [ www.gotchaequine.com.au ] and spoke

to Lucy about Hercules, she gave me a plan.

# take him off grass at night.

# put out hay nets on the fence to keep him walking around to eat at night.

# give him a detox [from grass toxins] from gotcha equine.

# give him minerals/vitamins supplements from gotcha equine.

# take him off all grains and bring his food back to basic [chaff only]

I did all these things as well as lucy giving me a dietary plan for him . I did notice a

change once I put these things into place – he was more settled and not as impatient .I

purchased a nose net for Hercules thinking this small bit of net could not make such a change ,but I was wrong, it did make a

difference and I was given a site to look up from a massage lady around winter last year 2014, www.hmta.com.au I looked it

up and called Kerry Marsh , I thought it would not hurt to see what was going on inside Hercules , it was not expensive [ as I

was paying a lot for the things from Gotcha equine, which are a on going expense. Kerry was very nice and gave me a 9 page

report on all levels of minerals for herc .I went off gotcha equine and followed up the diet program and supplements from

HTMA . I have found it so much easier to follow . Herc is still on minerals & vitamins but now he is only getting what his body

needs , not H/S any more and I have been so lucky to have found how to help Herc cope so much so that to you when you see

Hercules ridden or in a yard he is just a normal horse who wears a nose net .

Our H/S is different to others in many ways . Hercules only shows signs of H/S while ridden and when stressed. Seasons , wind

,sun do not play a part in H/S for Hercules it was all about him lacking all the correct minerals and vitamins when he was young

and growing up, so it was a lacking of theses which started his journey.Since getting Hercules we have had a lot of help from a

lot of people to make sure we are on the correct path –from massage [monthly], vet /chiro [monthly] ,trainers, and owners of

H/S horses , gotcha equine , and HMTA. We have come a long way but still are not 100% right .it is a long road but one I am

happy to do for Hercules and myself.

Thanks Jacquie smith
