Safety Precautions

KNOW YOUR FASTENING BASEMATERIAL

1. ALWAYS know the thickness andtype of base material into which youare fastening. NEVER GUESS.Test the base material by using theCenter Punch Test. The CenterPunch Test is performed by using ahammer to test drive the particularfastener to be used into the mate-rial. If the point penetrates easily, the material is too soft. If the pointbecomes blunt, the material is toohard. If the material fractures, cracks or shatters, the material istoo brittle. Test fastenings shouldalways be made starting with thelowest power load (Gray-Level 1)and proceeding with the ordershown. Operators and bystandersmust ALWAYS wear goggles andear protection that meet or exceedCE standards.

2. NEVER attempt to drive fastenersinto very hard or brittle materialsincluding, but not limited to castiron, glass, tile, stone, brick, or hard-ened steel. Materials of this typetend to shatter and create hazardfrom flying particles.

Safety Precautions4. NEVER drive fasteners into thin or

easily penetrated materials unlessit is backed by concrete or steel. When in doubt, such as when basematerial is concealed, conduct aCenter Punch Test. Check continu-ally to avoid fastening into unsuit-able material, especially in olderbuildings.

5. DO NOT fasten thru or within 13mm(1/2”) of predrilled or pre-punchedholes.

6. DO NOT drive fasteners into con-crete less than three times as thickas the intended fastener penetra-tion, within 76mm (3”) of the edge, within 76mm (3”) of another fas-tener or within 76mm (3”) of a failedfastener.

7. DO NOT drive fasteners into steelbase material less then 5mm(3/16”) thick, within 51mm (2”) of aweld, within 13mm (1/2”) of theedge or within 25mm (1”) of anotherfastener.

8. When fastening into masonry walls, always drive into horizontal mortarjoints, NEVER into vertical mortarjoints. BE CAREFUL, a poorly laidjoint may permit too much penetra-tion, and/or unsatisfactory holdingpower.

6. Fasteners are a permanently in-stalled fixture. An act of demolitionis required for their removal. Appro-priate safety precautions must betaken.

Safety Precautions

2. Remington Powder Loads areavailable in four power levels withgray (1) being the lowest powerlevel and yellow (4) being the high-est power level. Always start withthe lowest power level (gray-level 1)and increase until a proper fasten-ing is made.Always use Remingtonpowder loads or loads manufac-tured to specifications outlined inthe P.A.T.M.I. “Technical Data Per-taining to Powder Loads (Boost-ers)”.

4. NEVER carry fasteners or otherhard objects in the same pocket orcontainer with powder loads.

5. A color blind person must take extraprecautions to prevent the chanceof mixing the powder loads of vari-ous levels.

3. NEVER use powder loads in fire-arms.

Safety Precautions

7. NEVER use fasteners longer than63.5mm (2 1/2”). NEVER use com-mon nails. Remington Power Fas-teners are manufactured from spe-cial steel and heat treated to pro-duce a very hard, yet ductile fas-tener.

8. NEVER pry a load out of the cham-ber. Prying can discharge the loadcausing serious injury.

9. ALWAYS insert the fastener first, then the powder load. If work isinterrupted for any reason, AL-WAYS remove the powder loadbefore removing the fastener.

Why A Fastener Holds

CONCRETE:As a general rule, penetration should beapproximately 25mm to 32mm (1” to 1 1/4”) into the base concrete. Make surethe concrete is at least three times asthick as the intended fastener penetra-tion. Never have the fastener pointprotude thru the concrete.NOTE: Concrete needs to cure for 28days before maximum fastening holdingpower will be achieved.

STEEL:In steel, the point of the fastener mustpenetrate completely through for high-est holding power. If not, the springaction of the steel pushes back on thepoint and tends to force the fastener out.

Recommended application are between5mm to 8mm (3/16-5/16”) steel.

Safety Precautions

Overdriven Fasteners

An overdriven fastener results when toostrong of a powder load is used causingthe piston to extend past the muzzle.Move to the next lightest powder load.Repeated overdrive will damage yourtool. By avoiding overdrive, you can ex-tend the life of your tool considerably.NOTE: NEVER fire the tool without afastener. This can damage the tool and/or cause possible injury to the operator.IMPORTANT: If the tool does not openafter firing and the piston is overdriven, see Piston Overdrive, page 18.

LOADING THE POWERHAMMER1. Insert the proper fastener into the

muzzle, round metal head first.Push fastener until the point is evenwith the end of the muzzle.

2. Grab the muzzle and pull forwarduntil it stops. This sets the pistonand opens the chamber area.

3. Insert the proper Remington Pow-der Load into the chamber, whileholding the muzzle downward. Besure to keep holding the muzzledownward and away from you. Thepowder load will not seat fully.

4. Push the barrel into the housinguntil it stops and hold in the closedposition keeping the muzzlepointed down. This keeps the pow-der load from falling out of the cham-ber.

FIRING THE POWERHAMMER1. Place the muzzle of the tool against

the work surface, hold at 90°, DoNot Tilt.

2. Hold the grip with one hand andpush down, compressing thespring. The groove around the bar-rel and outside of the housing at thechamber area MUST line up (asshown) for the tool to operate prop-erly. If the grooves DO NOT line up,check that the powder load has notfallen out of the chamber.

3. ALWAYS keep the chamber open-ing away from the wrist to avoidcontact from escaping gas.

4. Using a one pound hammer, HITTHE FIRING PIN SQUARELYWITH A SHARP, STRONG BLOW.Hold the hammer as close as youcan to the tool head to improve youraccuracy. For best results, work at alevel below shoulder height.

5. If the powder load does not fire withthe first blow, wait 30 seconds, ejectthe powder load and start overagain. NOTE: A LIGHT HAMMERBLOW WILL JAR THE DRIVE PIS-TON OUT OF PROPER POSITIONCAUSING LESS POWER ANDPENETRATION OF THE FAS-TENER.

NOTE: The labor regulations of manycounties require that the operator of thistool on a job site be thoroughly trainedand certified for compentence prior tooperating this tool.

6. After the fastening is made, removethe tool from the work surface. Grabthe barrel and pull forward rapidly. This ejects the spent load and setsthe piston in the firing position.

7. NOTE: THE TOOL CANNOT BEFIRED IN THE OVERHEAD POSI-TION.

PISTON OVERDRIVEIf the tool does not open after firing andthe piston is 13mm (1/2 ”), or more out ofthe muzzle:1. Place the muzzle end of the tool

against wooden work surface andhold grip with one hand.

2. Hit the firing pin with a hard hammerblow several times and force pistonback into muzzle.

3. Eject the powder load. (See step 6of Firing The Powerhammer).
