The goal is to quantify the payback on money spent on improve- ments. For example, if you pay $50,000 for a new kitchen, how much of that expense can be recouped when it comes time to sell? For the second consecutive year, Cost vs. Value data show that the value of remodeling is up for all 35 projects included in the survey. The current cost-value ratio is up more than 9%, with 15 projects improving between 10% and 28% compared with 2013. This trend signals an end to the long slide in the cost-value ratio, which began to fall in 2006 and didn’t begin to rebound until last year. Significantly, for the first time in four years, improved resale value of residential housing had more of an influence in the cost-value ratio than construction costs. A modest 2.2% increase in average national construction costs was more than offset by an 11.5% improvement in average national resale value. This reverses a trend that began in 2010–11, when construction costs dropped dramatically, but resale values dropped even more, driving the ratio down. Replacements—especially door, window, and siding projects—once again outperformed larger discretionary remodeling projects, when judged solely by national ranking. Entry Door Replacement (steel) is once again ranked first, as has been the case since this project was introduced in the 2009–10 report. Every year Remodeling Magazine surveys hundreds of contractors, realtors, and appraisers from major

cities across the country, compiling data to determine the cost of various types of remodeling projects and

their impact on the resale value of homes. The goal is to quantify the payback on money spent on improve-

ments. For example, if you pay $50,000 for a new kitchen, how much of that expense can be recouped

when it comes time to sell?

ratio is up more than 9%, with 15 projects improving

between 10% and 28% compared with 2013. This trend

signals an end to the long slide in the cost-value ratio,

which began to fall in 2006 and didn’t begin to rebound

Significantly, for the first time in four years, improved

resale value of residential housing had more of an

A modest 2.2% increase in average national construction

costs was more than offset by an 11.5% improvement in

“Truth, like light, blinds. Falsehood, on the contrary,is a beautiful twilight that enhances every object.” - Albert Camus

BLUEFIN TUNA is often served at high-end sushi bars, but the numbers of these magnificent fish are dropping fast. Plus, big fish are high in mercury." To rein in your share of the overfishing disaster currently un-folding—bluefin stock is down by more than 96 percent from unfished levels—order a vegetarian roll instead.

The problem with CONVENTIONAL COFFEE stems from manipulating this shade-loving plant that produces beans into one that's grown in full sunlight and requires substantial use of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers. Biologically rich forests are cleared in favor of coffee crops, which devastates tropical species, especially migratory birds. Order organic java to cut out the pesticides, and choose shade-grown to protect rainforest biodiversity. The way you take your coffee matters, too. At Starbucks, a black cup of coffee has a carbon footprint of about 30 grams, whereas a venti caramel latte has one of about 420 grams.

CHEAP BURGERS are produced from factory-farmed beef. This often requires replacing tropical forests with fields of genetically modified corn and soy, which are laced with pesticides that pollute local waters. It takes 10 to 14 pounds of grain-based feed for a cow to gain 1 pound of flesh. When possible, choose grass-fed beef.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED CORN violates many sustainability boundaries—destroying habitats, depleting soils, breaking nutrient cycles, polluting air and water and contaminating native maize varieties. Additionally, this type of“monocrop” puts our bee populations at risk and creates “superpests.” Finally, much of this type of corn is used to produce high-fructose corn syrup, which takes a huge toll on the land, requiring more pesticides and fertilizers over time as soil is depleted.

PALM OIL is one of the largest causes of rainforest destruction, and its use has ballooned by over 500 percent over the past 10 years — it’s now in about half of all packaged goods. This oil can be produced only in tropical areas. Huge swaths of ancient rainforest in Indonesia and Malaysia have been bulldozed to plant new palms (over 8

million acres already). As a result, the orangutan may be on its way to extinction. To avoid palm oil, read the ingredients on packaged goods, especially cookies, crackers, and instant-noodle soups.
