Considered an asset by the City of Raleigh, theNew Bern House is a food shelter and serves onaverage 120 people/day during the week, and 200people/day on the weekends. During the holidayseasons, the house serves around 7,500 meals.

“The New Bern House provides a family withstability during times of uncertain transition,”explained Nathan “Doc” Harley, Ph.D., assistantdirector of Helping Hand Mission. “We canhouse up to 65 residents, most are small families. The kitchen plays a vital role in this facility both for our residents and the homeless who we also serve.”

Helping Hand Mission purchased the housearound 1992 using money it had collected throughdonations. The house receives regular food dona-tions from various local restaurants and food organ-izations. The food is then reheated and served.

The New Bern House, a transitional home and food shelterthat is part of the Helping Hand Mission and an asset to the City ofRaleigh, received a whole house electrical update and kitchen ren-ovation through the Remodelers Council of the Home BuildersAssociation of Raleigh-Wake County.

The New Bern House prepares an average of 100-300 meals a dayfrom that kitchen,” said Harold Glazer, president and CEO ofH. Glazer Builder, Inc., and the project lead. “They did not have

any air conditioning in the kitchen and their electrical circuits throughoutthe entire house were very outdated. So the entire purpose of the remodelwas for functionality, regardless of the style.”

The large kitchen renovation included the addition of two commercialsinks, new cabinets, expanded pantry for food storage, new flooring, andelectrical and HVAC upgrades. The renovation also added four ovenranges, eight gas burners, three refrigerators and four microwaves.

The need for the community service project was brought to the atten-tion of the council through one of Glazer’s clients. The volunteer renova-tion took three weeks to complete and involved more than 20 companies. Those companies either donated time, labor or materials to the project.

What is Universal Design?

14 Remodeling Today Triangle • www.wakeremodelers.com • www.docremodelers.com

Universal Design is the design of products andenvironments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extentpossible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

What makes a home “universal?” It’s simple. Everyone can useuniversal design! It doesn’t matter if you are young or old. Youcould be short or tall, healthy or ill. You might have a disability.

Or you may be a prize-winning athlete. Because of universal design, people who are very different can all enjoy the same home. And thathome will be there for all its inhabitants even when their needs change.

Here are some of the more common universal design features:• No-step entry. No one needs to use stairs to get into a universal

home or into the home’s main rooms.• One-story living. Places to eat, use the bathroom and sleep are all

located on one level, which is barrier-free.• Wide doorways. Doorways that are 32-36 inches wide let

wheelchairs pass through. They also make it easy to move big things in and out of the house.

• Wide hallways. Hallways should be 36-42 inches wide. That way, everyone and everything moves more easily from room to room.

• Extra floor space. Everyone feels less cramped. And people in wheelchairs have more space to turn.

Some universal design features just make good sense. Once you bringthem into your home, you'll wonder how you ever lived without them. ■

4. Perceptible Information – The design communicates necessary information to the user effectively, regardless of ambientconditions or the user’s sensory abilities.

5. Tolerance for Error – The design minimizeshazards and the adverse consequences ofaccidental or unintended actions.

6. Low Physical Effort – The design can beused efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue.

7. Size and Space for Approach and Use –Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation and use regardless of user’s body size, postureor mobility.

The following principles of universal designwere drafted in 1997 by a group of designersand architects at the Center for UniversalDesign at North Carolina State University.

Over the years, I have heard about manyremodel ing projects that went wrongbecause the homeowners took advice fromunqual i f ied people. Although family, fr iendsand neighbors mean well , they usually don’thave al l the facts, knowledge and expertiserequired to make decis ions about homeremodeling and/or construction. It is vital lyimportant for homeowners to seek out quali-fied professionals when thinking about makingrenovations to their homes.

If there was ever a time to listen to someonewho knows what they are talking about, it’swhen you are planning a remodeling project,”

says Lewis Sadler, president of Sadler Construction.“Your home is your biggest investment and projectsdone correctly will help it last a lifetime, add valueand look beautiful.”

We have all heard about the arm chair attorney, accountant or doctor, but too many of us ignore theimportance of seeking professional advice for themany improvements possible for our homes. Thevarious professionals who can and will assist us inimproving our homes include architects, designers, builders, remodelers and landscape professionals. To ensure that the systems in our homes are kept

safe and in good condition, there are many service professionals including plumbing and heating specialists, electricians, as well as those who service our appliances and any other systemswe have in our homes.

Whether we need the services of an architect for structural analysis or for the design of a new orremodeled home, a builder, a remodeler or a servicecontractor, we are safer to use the expertise of a professional rather than that of a well-meaning,but uninformed source.

When it comes to getting professional advice,it is critical that you let your adviser know all thefacts of the situation; otherwise even a professionalmight lead you astray. Of course, anyone who is areal professional should strive to get all the relevantdata before giving their opinion. There are just toomany instances of unprofessional or unlicensedcontractors giving low-ball pricing and then cuttingcorners to make up the difference.

John Sperath, president of Blue RibbonConstruction recently had to bail out a customerwhen their project was abandoned by a non-licensed contractor. He reminds us of the importance of checking references.

“It is vitally important for homeowners to ask acontractor they are considering hiring for references,”he says, “and they need to call them. A good and reputable contractor should supply a list of 10 to 15references for prospects to contact. It is your home, your money and your sanity that is at tremendousrisk if you do not do your due diligence with regardto selecting a contractor.” (See the sidebar on page 18 titled “Evaluate a Home Remodeler’s References”from the Wake County Remodelers Council for a listof questions to ask references.)

Recently a client told me about a prospectdeciding not to use his services because theprospect’s financial advisor said to go with the“low bidder”. As we all know, that is a recipe for disaster and a prime example of not looking at all the facts.

To prevent any problems, ask each bidder for awritten estimate. When comparing estimates, besure each one is based upon the same set of plans, specifications, materials and scope of work. If aremodeler is suggesting any deviations, ask thatthey be presented as options separate from the mainproposal. Finally, ask how any changes you makewill affect the price. These tips will help you get themost complete quote possible and help you avoidany surprises down the road.

Before you sign a contract, ask the home remodeler to sharenames, phone numbers, and/or email addresses of some cus-tomers and take the time to see the home remodeler's work.

Ask to see jobs similar to yours. If you are doing a kitchen remodel, you want to see kitchens the remodeler has done. Does the quality ofthe work meet your standards? Ask the home owners:

• Would you hire this company again?• Did the home remodeler maintain a neat job site, provide regular

broom clean-up, and haul away debris including personal trash?• Did the home remodeler keep labor and materials delays to a

minimum so that your job could be started and completed on time and within budget?

• Did you find the home remodeler easy to work with? Did thehome remodeler keep you informed as the job progressed?

• Did the home remodeler supply you with paperwork in a timely fashion?

• How well did the home remodeler deal with the problems that arose?

Carol and Jim Weaver knew they wanted to modernizethe kitchen in their 1,300 square foot, single-story brick home. Builtin the late 1960s, the space was poorly designed and the workarea lacked any real functionality.

The original kitchen wasn’t designed in any reasonable fashion,”Jim says. “Prior to the renovation, the kitchen had a long bar andyou had to walk from the stove and sink all the way around it to

get to the table. “The room’s traffic flow was especially poor.To get a start on their project, Carol and Jim visited the local Home

Show for some ideas. While there, they found a local custom cabinetcompany, Cabinets by Horizon, and met Todd Lincoln, project managerat Lincoln & Associates, a residential building and remodeling contractor.

“Jim was in the military and we lived in a lot of different houses, so I knew what I wanted and what I didn’t,” Carol comments. “I shared myideas with both the cabinet designer and Todd. They then developedplans and we made decisions.”

KITCHEN RENOVATIONSThe new kitchen’s footprint changed dramatically.Doorways were widened and other universal design amenities were added throughout.Horizon provided new custom wood cabinets and Lincoln & Associates took charge of the project construction from demo to electrical toplumbing, carpentry and lighting. The design also included a center island and granite countertops.

“A designer from Horizon came over and took photos of the kitchen, took measurementsand talked with Carol about what she wanted,”Jim says. “She showed us how everything wouldlook on the computer and the end result is justwonderful. And the cabinets and appliances fitlike a glove.”

The renovated kitchen touts all new Bosch stainless steel appliances including an LP cooktop. The rest of the appliances are all electric, includingthe oven, refrigerator, freezer, microwave and venthood.

The renovation took approximately 3-1/2months. In addition to the kitchen itself,Lincoln & Associates needed to go through the floor and under the house to correct adrainage problem. Also, because codes hadchanged since the house was built, they had toreinforce floor joists to support the weight of thegranite countertops.

The end result of the project is a beautiful newkitchen. “It’s much nicer and much more usablethan before,” Carol exclaims. “We’re very happywith it.”

Importantly, the project was completed on timeand on budget. In fact, the Weavers were so happywith the project, they had Todd Lincoln and histeam renovate their master bedroom suite

A NEW MASTER SUITEThe original home had four small bedrooms witha bath and a half. This 600 square foot additiongreatly added to the size of the master bedroomand included a fully updated bathroom with aglass walk-in shower, a marble vanity and customcabinetry.

“We tiled the floor and the shower is a walk-inwith a bench,” Jim says. “We’re both senior citizensso we can sit down if we wish. There is a regularshower head coming out of the wall and there is asecond hand-held shower near the bench that youcan use if you are sitting down.”

Both Carol and Jim are extremely pleased withthe results of their remodeling projects. “It feels likea new home,” Carol says. According to Jim, “Itwas exciting to see it all come together. The periodof time you deprive yourself of the comfort turnsout to be great in the end.”

SELECTING YOUR CONTRACTORAfter meeting Lincoln at their local Home Show, the Weavers researched other firms, had him outfor an interview and felt he was the best fit fortheir job. They feel their due diligence paid off.“Their carpenter is unbelievable,” Jim says. “He’sa true artist.”

ADVICE TO OTHER HOMEOWNERSAfter completing two remodeling projects in a relatively short period of time, Carol and Jimhave several tips to share other homeownersthinking about remodeling.

“We found that the custom cabinets we hadbuilt with the features we wanted cost us approxi-mately the same amount as if we had installedprebuilt cabinetry,” Jim says. “And we’re sure the quality is better.”

“Shop around and look at different optionsbefore making any final decisions,” Carol advises.“Decide what you like and then get help fromthere.”

“Be flexible,” Jim advises. “We decided wewould be flexible ahead of time and, as a result,we never got upset. There are delays, there aredays that it rains and they cannot get there. Wedecided we were not going to complain and wedidn’t. From our standpoint, our project wentvery smoothly,” he says. ■

The backyard deck has been our home’s focal point foroutdoor l iving for many years. Many of us fondly remember havinga family cookout, a friendly gathering or just sitting and sipping acool drink on the deck.

Because it is the transition area between the comfort of our homesand the beauty of our yards, we often spend a significant amountof time and money on the design and construction of our decks.

Regardless of whether you opt for a modest 10’ x 10’ platform or a moreelaborate multi-level structure, however, the first decision you need tomake is the material from which you will build it.

Here, for your consideration, are several of themore common choices:

WOODThe original and still most common deckingchoice, wood is natural, strong, and easy to install.Because it can splinter, warp and rot, it needs tobe cleaned annually and re-stained every few yearsto keep it looking its best. The most affordablewood option is pressure treated wood. Typicallymade from Southern yellow pine grown on forestplantations, one of the most popular brands isYellaWood®.

YellaWood® brand products are treated with awood preservative process that has been certified byScientific Certification Systems as anEnvironmentally Preferable Product based on Life-Cycle Assessment when compared to alkaline cop-per quaternary or chromated copper arsenate (cca).

In fact, builders can earn up to 19 points towardNational Green Building Certification throughNational Association of Home Builders (NAHB)Research Center simply by building withYellaWood® brand products.

Redwood and cedar have natural defenses againstrot and insects, but are softer woods and can bedamaged by heavy traffic. Like all woods, the sunwill fade their natural color to gray unless sun-blocking finishes are regularly applied. When caredfor, they will last up to 20 years.

Tropical hardwoods like mahogany and Brazilianred wood are quite durable and quite expensive. They can last up to 25 years, but they are difficultto work with because they are so hard. They arealso resistant to insects and decay.

COMPOSITE DECKINGComposite decking products are building materialsmanufactured using a mixture of plastic and woodfiber. Composite decking materials are popularbecause they require less maintenance than woodand often use recycled materials. Brands like Trexand TimberTech composite decking can be moldedwith a wood grain and come in a variety of colors.

Easy to install, composite decking is virtuallymaintenance free. It won’t rot or split and it resistssun, water and insect damage. Most products feature limited warranties of 10 to 25 years.

PVC DECKINGVinyl decking made from cellular PVC is the ultra-low maintenance choice as a decking material.Products from Azek, Trex, TimberTech and othersare resistant to stains, mold, insects and fading.Typically less expensive then composite decking, many products in this category have a limited lifetime warranty.

ALUMINUM DECKINGPowder coated aluminum decking can be used to create a water tight floor for your deck. Thisunique material will never splinter, rot or rust.Aluminum decking is strong and lightweight.Because the aluminum decking—LockDry is a popular brand—forms a gapless surface when it’sinstalled on a second or third level deck, the areaunderneath remains dry on a rainy day.

REMODELING YOUR DECKFrom a pricing perspective, wood is the most

affordable decking option. It is significantly lessexpensive than composites, but wood does need tobe regularly maintained.

Customers renovating wood decks who haveexperienced the splintering, cracking and grayingthat can occur will, however, often keep the originaldeck structure in place, but replace the wood deck-ing surface with composite deck boards and railing.

For customers who do not want to do regularmaintenance or who are planning to stay in theirhomes for a significant period of time, low-mainte-nance products may be the way to go. ■

After living in their home for 15 years, our clients decided their transi-tional home needed some updating. Their home is set on a beautiful lotoverlooking a small Umstead Park lake, and they wanted to take betteradvantage of the views. A modern addition with storefront windows gavethem the views they desired, and a reconfigured floor plan provided themwith not only more useable space, but also a better use of the existingspace for their family. When the existing dining room was converted toa new office, a spacious open concept dining room and familiy roomwere added. The master bath was enlarged and redesigned with more contemporary fixtures and cabinets. All the carpet in the home wasreplaced and hardwood floors refinished. In the kitchen, new espressostained oak cabinets were installed, and all the countertops werereplaced with granite. A custom glass bar top sitting above the oversizedkitchen island provides an ideal area for entertaining. A laundry chute tothe new basement laundry room is conveniently hidden in the wet barcabinetry. All railings both inside and out were replaced with Feeneycable rail to give the home a more modern look.

The owners of this 1960s split level were looking for some better outdoor living spaceand a place to park their vehicles out of the weather. Having seen our projects at previ-ous Home Tours, they contacted us about the possibilities of a design to incorporate theirneeds. We started with the idea of putting the screened outdoor living area above thegarage and included a cantilevered deck across the back of the addition. We also removedthe back wall of the main level to expand the dining room & renovated kitchen.

We are proud to be participating in our 12th Remodelers Home Tour and look forward to seeing you there. For more pictures and contact information please visit ourwebsite at www.renovationspecs.com.
