REMOTE AND FLEXIBLE LEARNING FROM TERM 2
STUDENT HANDBOOK
Following advice from the Victorian Government on Tuesday 7 April, Greensborough College will be moving to remote
and flexible learning from Term 2 beginning Wednesday 15th of April.
This is a step all Victorian government schools are taking to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). This
means that all students who can learn at home must learn from home. This is a very clear directive from the
Victorian Government based on the advice of the Chief Health Officer.
The Department’s latest advice on coronavirus can be found at https://www.education.vic.gov.au/coronavirus
At Greensborough College, we are committed to working with you to support your wellbeing and make your
learning experience the best we possibly can. STAY HOME, and stay connected to us via Compass where we will
continue to keep you up to date with school news via the News Feed.
We aim to run regular scheduled classes using a combination of Compass Lesson Plans, Online Textbooks or Programs
and WebEx from Year 7 to Year 12. WebEx is an online meeting platform similar to Skype. Instructions on how to use
it are provided below.
Learning support materials will be made available on Compass. Each scheduled class will be outlined in the lesson plan
and teachers will advise if the lesson will be conducted via WebEx.
If you do not have a computer device or internet at home, we will be in contact with you to discuss whether your child
needs to borrow one and how your child can receive materials.
DAILY SCHEDULE FOR STUDENTS:
All students will follow the Greensborough College Term Two timetable.
Access COMPASS every weekday and check News Feed.
Students will be ready to learn at 9am every day, with workbooks and other relevant stationery at hand
and log onto their devices to open Compass.
Each period will commence at the scheduled period start time and recess and lunch times will remain the
same.
However students will need to take breaks from working on screen, so lesson times have been shortened-
32 minutes for Years 7-10 and 40-50 minutes for Years 11 and 12 (including Year 10 students undertaking
a VCE subject)
Lesson plans for your classes will be uploaded each day on Compass and must be checked for each
session. Follow the teacher’s instructions and complete the work that has be outlined for the session.
Please see steps below for how to access lesson plans on Compass.
Your teacher may also save notes, Powerpoints, videos etc. under Resources and post updates in the
Class News feed.
Students are expected to complete class work and any homework tasks in preparation for their next
timetabled class. All work needs to be submitted via Learning tasks on Compass or as requested by the
teacher.
Do your best to meet timelines and due dates and take responsibility for own learning. You are expected
to continue completing work to a high standard.
When indicated in the lesson plan, engage with teachers and classmates at the scheduled class time using
WebEx. Be dressed for the day in clothes appropriate for video conferencing- no school uniform is
required!
Students will be a safe, responsible and ethical user whenever and wherever they use their device and
whilst communicating with their teachers. Students will follow the teacher’s instructions whilst working
remotely.
At times you may require extra assistance, please connect with your teacher and they will get back to as
soon as possible. Remember that you need to address your teachers appropriately when communicating
with them via email or online platforms.

A GOOD STUDY ENVIRONMENT
Get some peace and quiet. You will need a quiet place to work without distractions from things like television
Avoid games. Consider uninstalling any computer games to avoid temptation. Or keep the games on a different computer in the house.
Turn off your mobile phone. Let friends and family members know the hours that you will be "at" school.
Beware surfing the black hole of the Internet. It is easy to lose track of the time as you wander from site to site.
Consider ergonomics. Adjust the height of your chair, keyboard, and screen so that you are comfortable. Forearms and thighs should be level and parallel to the floor. Wrists should not be bent while typing.
Set up good lighting and comfortable seating. Lighting in the room should be at least as bright as the computer screen to avoid eye strain.
HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
During the course of the day we are advising students to take a normal recess and lunch and have healthy snacks and a healthy lunch. We are also advising students that this is a good opportunity to have some physical activity. This could look like the following:
Go out in the back yard and do some stretches
Kick a ball around in the back yard
Take yourself and a family member around the block for 15 mins (remembering that public parks are officially closed)
If you notice that you are feeling stressed or anxious, take some time out to calm down, then talk to a teacher,
classroom support staff member or someone in the family about what is happening. Helping them to understand the
situation may reduce your anxiety.
Maintain open channels of communication with the College and your teachers. Keep connected by staying in touch
with family members and friends via telephone or online platforms.
Where additional support is needed, please see Compass Well-being link that will be posted shortly.
MANAGING SCREEN TIME AND ONLINE SAFETY
Make good digital choices and use information and communication technologies responsibly. Follow the GC
Acceptable User Agreement.
use only the online tools recommended by our College or the Department of Education and Training (DET)

• Check for and open Attachments
• Check if you need to submit the task through COMPASS:
Click on the to upload your file
• You can ask a short question to your teacher by clicking on the “Feedback” tab • Put your question in “Conversation”. The teacher’s response will come up when they have replied.
If you want an overview of all tasks set by all your teachers, click and select Learning Tasks
Think of ways you could also help each other by communicating with friends outside of learning time. You might be
able to discuss ways to approach certain questions or tasks.
HOW DO I COMMUNICATE WITH MY TEACHERS?
Teachers want to help you to succeed and will answer your questions. Teachers will be available to connect with you
during working hours (9am to 3pm).
Teachers may connect with you via Webex as a class or on individual or small group basis.
You can also use COMPASS to email your teacher, from your home page. Follow the steps below to email your
teachers.
STEP 1: From the COMPASS Home Page, click on and select the subject
STEP 2: On the Dashboard, click on Email Teacher
STEP 3: Use appropriate style and language for school. When communicating with teachers and other staff, you
should write in full, grammatically correct sentences and with a respectful tone. Because of the distance, it's
tempting for some students to say things out of anger or frustration that they would never say to a teacher in
person. Teachers are professionals. Treat them with the same respect and courtesy that you would at school.
Checking emails:
• Go to School Favourites
• Select School Email: (Office 365)
• Check Inbox
If you are logging in for the first time: [email protected] (you can find this on your profile on COMPASS)

Contact your teacher and let them know you are unwell today, and ask what you will miss
What if I'm "late" to class and it is running on WebEx?
When you join the class, contact your teacher via the message section to let them know you're there. "Sorry I'm late
to class" - then ask if you have missed anything when it is appropriate to do so. Don't worry-your teacher will
understand you may have technical difficulties or sibling issues.
My computer/WiFi won't work. What do I do now?
First try shutting down and restarting. If that doesn't work, email IT support from your Greensborough email
address) (you can access this from Compass) at [email protected]
What if I can’t submit my work for the day?
Contact your teacher and let them know you have not been able to complete the work due to technical difficulties/
home issues/ difficulty completing parts of the task. Suggest when it will be completed or ask for help.
