1.1 What is Remote Desktop Manager ?

Description

Remote Desktop Manager is a small application used to manage all your remoteconnections and virtual machines. Add, edit, delete, shared, organize and find yourremote connection quickly. Compatible with Microsoft Remote Desktop, TerminalServices, VNC, LogMeIn, Team Viewer, Ftp, SSH, Telnet, Dameware, X Window,VMware, Virtual PC, PC Anywhere, Hyper-V, Citrix, Radmin, Microsoft RemoteAssistance, Sun Virtual Box and more.

It's only a wrapper and a manager around existing technologies. There is noproprietary protocol implemented in this application and all the communication areestablished using another library or software.

Where do I start if I don't know anything about remote connection ?

If you never used a tool like Remote Desktop Client (mstsc.exe), VNC or any other tool and you want toconnect to a remote machine, we suggest you to use LogMeIn. It's very easy to setup and it's free.

Supported protocols:

Remote Desktop Manager can be installed without any problem on a Terminal Server and on a thinclient.

1.3 Creating a new session

Overview

The first thing to do before you can use Remote Desktop Manager is to configure at least one session. There is many types of session and you must at least know the basis of each type before you can useit.

Remote Desktop Manager support these session types:

Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDP)Microsoft Remote AssistanceVNC (UltraVNC, TightVNC, RealVNC and embedded)LogMeInTeam ViewerFTP (Explorer, Filezilla and WinSCP)X WindowPutty (SSH, Telnet, RAW and rLogin)Dameware Mini Remote ControlRadmin ViewerCitrix XenApp (ICA)Symantec PC AnywhereMicrosoft Hyper-VMicrosoft Virtual PCMicrosoft Virtual ServerMicrosoft Windows Virtual PCSun VirtualBoxVMware Player, VMware Workstation, VMware ESXi and VMware vSphereCisco VPN clientSonicWall Global VPN clientAnd many more by installing other addons

Creating a session from the context menu

The easiest way to create a new session is from the context menu. On the main application window, simply right-click Sessions and select Add from the menu . You can specify the session type or atemplate to initialize a new session. The session property window will prompt you to customize yoursettings.

Creating a session with drag and drop

It's possible to drag and drop an .rdp file in the main screen. Remote Desktop Manager will ask you ifyou want to import the content and create a new session or create a session linked to the configurationfile.

It's also possible to drag and drop the LogMeIn desktop shortcut to create a LogMeIn session.

Creating a session by importing the configuration

It's possible to import a session by using the Import Computer Wizard or directly from a compatibleapplication. You can get more information Here

1.4 Configuring a session

Description

Each session type has his own specific settings, but some setting are common.

Name: This is the name of the session, it will appear in the session list. By default it's often the hostused for the remote connection.

Description: Contains a description of the session in plain text, rtf or from a web site.

Group / folder: This will be used to organize the session in different folder in context menu or in the treeview. You can find more information here

Display: Allow the session to be opened embedded in Remote Desktop Manager or not (externally). Italso allows the user to specify the monitor if the application allows it and if it's opened externally.

Security Group: In the Enterprise edition, the administrator can assign a security group to a sessionand allow only a subset of user to see this session.

VPN tab page: This section is used to configure an optional VPN connection to open before the mainsession is opened.

Sub connection tab page: This section contains the sub connection linked to the main session. It'spossible to share some variables like the host name. this is useful when you want to connect to thesame host with a different protocol. For example, the main session could be an RDP session you canalso configure a sub connection to access different share folder on this machine or an FTP site.

Information tab page: This section contains different type of information related to the session, forexample the machine specification or some useful notes. It's also possible to add custom information.

Events tab page: This section can contains a script or a command line to be executed before or after

establishing a connection. It could be used to execute a batch file or an external application that

prompt the user for more information, or also, to update a log on an external server.

Advanced tab page: This section contains more advanced settings related to the session, like the

internal data source ID and session ID. These values can be used to invoke Remote Desktop Manager incommand line to open the session or to do a batch modification.

1.5 Connecting to a session

Description

There's two possible connection modes for opening a session:

From a configured session in the data source. With quick connect.

Depending of the mode, Remote Desktop Manager can use a completely different application or library. This might explain why some behavior differ from one to another. For example: the external mode forRemote Desktop will use the Microsoft Remote Desktop's client (mstsc.exe) and the embedded modewill use the ActiveX.

Configured session

You can open the session by double clicking the session in the session list or by using the contextmenu. The session will use the default settings if it's double clicked and for more option use the contextmenu. From the menus it's possible to specify different connection option like:

Full screenEmbedded / External mode (click here for more details)Console or admin mode with the RDP protocolForce prompt of credentialsOpen with or without the configured VPN

Quick connect

By using the quick connect button , It's also possible to open a session ad-hoc by specifying thedestination and the session type. It's also possible to create a template and use it for the quick connect.you will specify the default setting you want and Remote Desktop Manager will merge them with thehost specified.

1.6 Embedded / tabbed mode vs external mode

Description

Remote Desktop Manager supports two types of sessions and some are not available depending of theselected session type:

External

Embedded / tabbed

External mode

A standalone session launches the administration session in the native application.

This mode usually launches the native application. For example, the native application for RDP is mstsc.exe. Most of the time, it's possible to specify the destination monitor. Also, depending of the sessiontype, the opened session view will be updated if Remote Desktop Manager can detect that a session isopened.

Embedded / tabbed mode

An embedded session runs within the confines of the Remote Desktop Manager window and shows tabsat the top of the window. This mode centralize the opened session in the application and it's easier toswitch from one to another.

1.7 Group / folder management

Description

Group or folder are used to organize your sessions in a logical way. It's possible to create groups andsub groups, but they are all sorted alphabetically. Groups can be created in two different ways:

By using the session propertiesFrom the session tree view

Creating groups from the session properties

Groups can be specified In the session properties. By filling this field with the group name you want,Remote Desktop Manager will generate the corresponding tree structure. Use the backslash ( \ ) tocreate sub group.

For example:

Office\Canada\Montreal

... will create 3 nodes in the tree:

OfficeCanadaMontreal

Creating groups from the tree view

By right clicking the root, a group or an existing session, a context menu appears allowing you to createa new group.

The "Add Group" dialog box will then prompt you to enter the name of the group and to choose hisparent group.

5.5 Security

Description

All passwords stored in the application database are encrypted using a strong encryption algorithm. Thismean that if somebody can access the data directly from the database, they won't be able to read it.

If you choose the option store password locally, Remote Desktop Manager will use the samemechanism than mstsc.exe (Microsoft Remote Desktop client) and the password will be stored in theWindow Credential repository. You can access it from "User Account" in Windows. You won't be able tosee the password and it's encrypted directly by Windows.

What is the Windows Credential Manager ?

The Windows Credential Manager allows you to store credentials, such as user names and passwordsthat you use to log on to websites or other computers on a network. By storing your credentials,Windows can automatically log you on to websites or other computers. Credentials are saved in special
