1. DescriptionRIO600 is designed to expand the digital I/O ofABB’s Relion® series IEDs and to provide I/O forthe station automation device COM600 using theIEC 61850 communication. RIO600 allowsmaximum I/O flexibility and provides a seamlessIEC 61850 connectivity between the substationbinary input and output signals with IEDs ensuringimproved functionality and performance.
RIO600 helps in simplifying and decreasing thewiring inside the substation. The fully hardwiredtraditional medium voltage switchgear /substation control and protection system containsa centralized rack room approach resulting in
extensive I/O wiring, connecting devices forsignalling between the switchgear base andsignalling to and from the external systems forexample, to the RTU or other higher levelautomation systems.
RIO600 provides an additional I/O within theswitchgear itself, by using the Ethernet-based IEC61850 horizontal GOOSE communication. Thesignals can be transmitted within the switchgearand to the higher level automation systems.Similarly, signals from the upper level automationsystems can be executed through RIO600connected to numerical IEDs.
2. DesignRIO600 is built on the industrial hardwareplatform which provides the same reliability,performance, and real-time functionality as ABB
protection IEDs, withstanding extremetemperatures, electromagnetic interference andstringent industry standards.

RIO600 has modular architecture with specificfunctionality like inputs and outputs that are builton the modules. RIO600modules can be stackedon standard DIN rail to achieve the desiredconfiguration.
RIO600 consists of four module types.
• PSM_H - Power Supply Module• LECM - Communication Module• DIM8_H - Binary input module - 8 channels• DOM - Binary output module - 4 channels
Two power supplies can be used for redundancypurposes if there are less than 20 channels inRIO600.
3. Configuration examplesRIO600 can be configured to operate a maximumof 20 binary input/output signals using one powersupply module and up to 40 binary input/outputsignals using two power supply modules.
The user-specific configuration can be adapted asper application requirements by combiningdifferent modules.

4. Self-supervisionRIO600 has built-in self-supervision feature whichcontinuously monitors the state of the RIO600hardware and the operation of the software. Anyfault or malfunction detected is used for alertingthe operator. The dedicated LED is provided toindicate the failure. RIO600 self-supervision statusis also distributed to the IEC 61850 station bus asone data entry in the published GOOSE frame.One of the output contact of DO module can alsobe configured to indicate the status of RIO600.
5. CommunicationRIO600 supports the horizontal GOOSEcommunication of the IEC 61850 substationautomation standard.
RIO600 is designed to send and receive binary
signals to or from the ABB Relion® series IEDsand the station automation device COM600 usingthe IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE (Generic ObjectOriented Substation Event) profile.
RIO600 communication module includes agalvanic Ethernet RJ-45 port for IEC 61850GOOSE communication. The used cable typemust be at least Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)CAT5e.
Using the same Ethernet port, RIO600 can beconnected in parallel to PCM600 and a Webbrowser over the same communication bus.

The total length of the assembly can becalculated by adding together length of allmodules.
The length of the end clamp depends on theselected part. This mounting uses the Weidmullerpart EW 35 which is 8.5 mm wide.

The Protection and Control IED Manager PCM600is available in three different variants, that isPCM600, PCM600 Engineering and PCM600Engineering Pro. PCM600 Engineering Pro withthe RIO600 connectivity package is used forconfiguring RIO600 in offline or online mode toconnect to the other IEDs in IEC 61850 stationbus. When the Web-browser based user interfaceis used, RIO600 can be accessed remotely usinga Web browser (IE 7.0 or later).
The RIO600 connectivity package is a collectionof software and specific device information, whichenable system products and tools to connect andinteract with RIO600. The connectivity packagesreduce the risk of errors in system integration,minimizing device configuration and set-up times.
