Cultural hegemony and Gender Hysteria...

Nona Shahnazarian is a social anthropologist who is a Senior Research Fellow at The Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, National Academy of Sciences, Yerevan, Armenia. She is also affiliated with the Center for Independent Social Research, St. Petersburg, Russia. In 2017, she was a Visiting Carnegie Fellow at the University of Stanford. She has published extensively on the issues of gender, war, migration, memory and Diaspora in the Caucasus, including a book chapter National Ideologies, Survival Strategies and Gender Identity in the Political and Symbolic Contexts of Karabakh War (2010), as well as a monograph in Russian In the Tight Embrace of Tradition: War and Patriarchy (2011). Her most recent contribution The Republic of Armenia (with Kristin Cavoukian) is issued in The Palgrave Handbook of Women’s Political Rights (2018). She runs the regional office of the Paris-based Women in War Think Tank in Yerevan since 2015. Being a member of The Global Network of Women Peacebuilders jointly launched by international and local institutions in Yerevan since 2017, she is active in the regional peacemaking initiatives.

Cultural hegemony and Gender Hysteria: A Battle of Words and Worlds Since late 2012, the terms “gender” and “gender equality” in the Armenian discursive space have become enveloped in undertones of tremendous negativity and even used as insults. The backlash in this area has a strong transnational aspect. “Anti-genderism” (as we might call it) in the region and in Armenia specifically is largely—but not exclusively—connected with Russian soft power influences. When Armenia entered the Russia-led Customs Union in 2013, gender issues became another argumentative node in the Europe-Eurasia, West-East ideological confrontation. Conservative elements in Armenia, which already had leanings toward traditional gender roles and identities, began to strongly claim that gender discussions are the product of the Western values agenda and therefore correlate with moral and demographic decline. The escalated discourses and sweeping negativity toward gender issues have been buttressed by Kremlin geopolitical strategies and tools—the aim being to steer post-Soviet states away from Western political and social standards and back toward the “Russian” worldview. These pushback tactics and results have implications for future political developments in Armenia and the region.

Vahé Oshagan: Between Acts

Hrayr Anmahuni Eulmessekian est né à Beyrouth et a été formé au lycée arménien Djemaran Nshan Palanjian. Après de courtes études de premier cycle en mathématiques et biologie au Collège Haigazian, il a été édudiant à l’Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts. EN 1984, il s’est installé à San Francisco, où il a achevé un Master en beaux-arts au San Francisco Art Institute, en se spécialisant dans le cinéma expérimental. Ses œuvres ont été exposées, mises à l’écran et diffusées à San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Erevan, Art Dubai, Sharjah Biennale, Pratt Manhattan. Il a été Editeur invité à ArteEast 2014 (Spring 2014) sur le sujet : ‘Les artistes arméniens du Liban et la guerre civile’. Il est fondateur du San Francisco Armenian Film Festival, ainsi que de Desnelle Collective à New York. Il vit actuellement à Los Angeles. www.ehrayr.com

Vahé Oshagan: Between Acts is a literary biography of the pre-eminent writer and public intellectual of the modern Armenian diaspora. The film infuses the traditional documentary with visual, sound-text, and scholarly interpretations of Oshagan’s poetry and prose. It features readings and commentary by Oshagan of his own poetry, as well as analyses by well-known literary critics Krikor Beledian, Krikor Chahinian, Marc Nichanian; and electronic compositions by Ohannes Salibian. Originally commissioned in 1994 by the Hamazkayin Cultural Association, Western Region, USA. It was part of the cultural events celebrating Oshagan’s fiftieth jubilee that took place worldwide in 1994-1995. Since then, several changes and additions have been made to the original. The upscaling and English subtitles of this final version have been made possible through generous grants from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Hamazkayin educational & cultural association.

Au moment où l’Arménie a intégré l’Union douanière eurasiatique dirigée par la Russie, en 2013, les

questions de genre ont été investies comme un enjeu dans la confrontation idéologique entre les

valeurs de l’Europe et celles de l’Eurasie, de l’Ouest et l’Est, ce que l’on peut associer à la stratégie

géopolitique de la Russie dans la région.

Initié en 2013, le projet compte 25000 mots et expressions concernant des domaines très variés, avec

de nombreux défis linguistiques et culturels. Grâce aux soutiens reçus (Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian,

Labex EFL, IRD), le dictionnaire est en accès libre. La présentation donnera une grande part aux

utilisations concrètes possibles en classe ou en usage individuel.

Biographie littéraire de V. Ochagan (1922-2000), écrivain et intellectuel majeur de la diaspora

arménienne. Réalisé en 1994, le film (56 mn) vient de sortir en DVD. La table ronde abordera l’apport

littéraire de Vahé Ochagan et de sa figure d’intellectuel dans la diaspora arménienne.
