Area boundaries are approximate. Revision Date: July 18, 2017. This 15,590-acre wildlife habitat management area is five miles southeast of Hyattville and is co-managed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the State of Wyoming. These lands were acquired in 1979 for the purpose of providing crucial big game winter range. About 250 mule deer winter here along with about 500 elk. Follow the rugged Hyattville Logging Road from Hyattville through Renner up to the Bighorn National Forest for beautiful scenery. There is a variety of vegetation types at varying elevations from 4,000 feet to almost 8,000 feet. You will find sagebrush grasslands, mountain shrubs, and ponderosa pine forests. Renner Reservoir, a 72-acre, man-made impoundment at the upper end of Ziesman Canyon, also contributes to the scenic beauty of this area. Geology enthusiasts will be interested in the rock formations that look like "biscuit dough". If you like to hunt, there are deer, elk, chukar, cottontail rabbits and blue grouse. The juniper draws of the upper (east) portion of Renner hold mule deer during the fall hunting season. In the late summer, look for sage-grouse hens rearing their chicks in the open sagebrush parks. The reservoir is stocked with largemouth bass, and the fishing is good (the reservoir is currently dry for our dredging project). Canada Geese, ducks, shorebirds, songbirds and many small mammals live here. Whether you hunt, fish, bird watch or like to take photographs, you will enjoy a visit to Renner. Camping limit is 14 days. The upper (east) portion of this area is closed each year from January 1 through May 31. The lower (west) portion is open all year.
