What makes a good bartender?There are a few different types of bartenders. I would classify myself as aspiring to be a “speed and performance” bartender. I’m still a very new bartender, and there are so many other, well-seasoned bartenders here.

Which bartender(s) have had the most influence on you, so far?It would have to be the rest of the staff at Rise. I’ve worked in many dif-ferent clubs throughout my life and this team is made up of very good friends. That’s something I’ve never experienced anywhere else.

T he Riverwalk District, that swath of downtown riverfront real estate bordered by Lake Street to the east, Arlington Avenue to the west, and Second Street to the north, and home to

Reno’s theater and arts districts, numerous pub crawls and fine dining establishments, is ground zero for Reno nightlife. Even Gertrude Stein would work up a sweat experiencing all the “there” there. With nearly fifty bars, restaurants and entertainment venues in its midst, tourists and locals alike would be hard-pressed to find a more culturally rich enclave anywhere in northern Nevada.

“Music and dancing can be found all around our neighborhood at “Music and dancing can be found all around our neighborhood at all hours in the entertainment core of Reno – what could be more exciting than that?” asks Shannon Dobbs, owner of two Riverwalk establishments: 5 Star Saloon, the oldest and most celebrated gay club in Nevada, and Rise nightclub.

“Both locations thrive on the sense of shared culture and community evident in the Riverwalk District that can be seen nowhere else in Reno,” emphasizes Dobbs.

Sharing Fulton Alley with Dobbs’ Rise is The Reno Knitting Factory which changed the face of downtown concert life when it opened to a sold-out crowd to see The Roots on New Year’s Day 2010. Astonishingly, according to Pollstar, the concert tour industry bible, the Reno Knitting Factory placed in the Top 100 world-wide in tickets sales for venues under 2,000 seats two years running.

The Riverwalk District has helped Reno become the defacto “Pub Crawl Capital of the World,” with more costumed and themed drinking events than any other city of its size. “Having so many unique bars within walking distance makes the Riverwalk District a great environment for nightlife,” says pub crawl impresario Ed

Adkins, whose events, including the Zombie Crawl, Superhero Crawl, Valentine’s Vampire Crawl and Leprechaun Crawl, attract thousands of visitors to the district.

“You can go to five distinctly different destinations in a two block radius. Go to a movie; take a walk along the river; get a bite at a great restaurant with numerous cuisine options; grab a drink and then go dancing, Adkins muses.

The Riverwalk District’s long-running Wine Walk, held the third Saturday of each month, is held the third Saturday of each month, is one of downtown’s great street parties, and acts as a catalyst for the discovery of new bars, clubs and restaurants – which have been sprouting up all over the district of late. The new Reef Sushi and Sake, located in the Palladio at 50 North Sierra Street, just next door to Ol’ Bridge Pub and Campo (which Esquire Magazine recently named one of the Top 20 New Restaurants in America), and Chef Larry Dunning’s Rawr – inside West Street Market – are the latest additions to the area’s fast-rising dining corridor.

“With all of the infrastructure and cultural amenities, the art, the dining, the architecture, the theaters and entertainment, you’re going to start seeing more and more people choosing to live in the district, because so much is going on here,” says West St. Wine Bar owner and Riverwalk Merchants Association President Rick Martinez. An anchor tenant at West Street Market, Martinez sees the requisite framework developing for a mini boom in the near future. “It’s like a puzzle and people are seeing the pieces start to fit together and make a beautiful picture of this community.”

I magine being on the set of “Cheers” sitting right next to the rambunctious Rhea Perlman, cracking clever jokes at your expense and accepting beer after cold beer from a

much younger Ted Danson. Once that image is planted firmly in your mind, nightlife in Midtown can be clearly understood.

“Midtown has that neighborhood feel that makes you feel more connected,” said Kasey Christensen, owner of Süp restaurant in Midtown. “You can go in to a business and see the owner; it makes you feel closer to home. Spend some time with us and you’ll get to know some faces.”

Midtown offers a nightlife for all demographics. While minors cannot frequent bars, they can still get that Friday night-out experience at places like Süp which will begin hosting live musical performances on Saturday nights within the next couple of months.

Good Luck Macbeth Theatre Company is another destination that caters to all walks of life. Aside from theatrical shows, GLM also provides Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art school for those who want to exercise their creative outlet on the weekends. Whether you are looking for a catchy musical, improv or a tear-inducing drama GLM will make for an entertaining evening whether you are a regular theatre-attendee or not.

“What I like about being part of Midtown is that it carries that energy and hope for an engaged and supportive community both professionally and personally,” said Chad Sweet, producing artistic director of GLM. “We are also a venue hosting independent and foreign films, the Spotlight Academy for Young Actors so even the kids can enjoy a little nightlife and a host of other special events both public and private. Anyone who spends an evening with us regardless of what they come to see will come back again and again.”

Keeping with the creative edge, Picasso and Wine on St. Lawrence Ave. opened their doors two months ago with the idea of combining two of the greatest things in life: art and wine.

Even if your drawing is a little rusty, it always looks better after a few glasses of Merlot. Picasso and Wine is a great place to spend a relaxed and memorable evening with friends who won’t judge your artistic abilities.

If you travel a few blocks South, you will find Brasserie St. James on Center Street. The Brasserie is in a historic building that adds to the ole-timey feel. Upon walking in to this brewery/restaurant, you will find nervous couples on their first date, old friends catching up over baked mac and cheese and beer connoisseurs debating the cause of global warming.

Right in the heart of Midtown sits Shea’s Tavern, owned and operated by the Shea family for over twenty-one years. Shea’s always has a band playing on their stage and there is rarely a dull moment.

“We promote a casual environment, somewhere to escape the world and let loose,” said Spencer Shea, co-owner of Shea’s Tavern. “We have a very eclectic clientele, the kind of place where you see a lawyer sitting next to a construction worker.”

The cool thing about nightlife in Midtown is that you can park at Chapel Tavern, have a couple drinks and admire the sophisticated décor, including a charred ceiling and rustic wooden tables. When you feel inclined, it is easy to stroll to the next stop whether it involves food, drinks or both. Whichever night spot you happen to walk into, you will feel that community vibe and while making new friends everywhere you go, and they’re always glad you came.

T he “old Highway 40” – or East Fourth street, as it's commonly known – is experiencing a transformation. once known as a place to

avoid, it's now evolving into one of reno's emerging nightlife districts.

on the East Fourth street merchants Association (or “E4”, as they call it), Ed Adkins (the organizer of some of reno's notable bar crawl events) is quoted as saying, “East Fourth street has a reputation, and we can’t ignore that or pretend it doesn’t exist. instead we want to embrace it and be proud of how we help make reno a great place. Fourth street isn’t pretentious, it’s got history and entertainment and it knows how to have fun.”

Although, technically, East Fourth street begins at the intersection of north virginia and Fourth, the entertainment and nightlife starts at Fourth and lake, with davidson’s distillery. From there, it extends eastward – slightly over a mile – with the last establishment being Fat daddyZ bar, before entering the city of sparks.

the East Fourth street merchants Association, headed up by cadillac lounge's richard vierra, has been working hard over the last couple of years to transform Fourth street into a place which “embraces the artistic, historic and cultural aspects” of the area, complete with “art galleries, bars, restaurants, concert venues, retailers and more.”

the heart of the district – or corridor – lies between lake and sutro streets, where the nightlife is as

varied as the people you'll find there on any given night. bars, restaurants, nightclubs and Fourth street's signature strip clubs are all there, for your pleasure.

Aside from a few, small clusters of activity, it can be a bit of a hike between establishments on East Fourth. during special events, though, pedicabs have been used to transport people from place to place, making for a convenient and safe alternative to driving.

the city of reno installed new lighting on East Fourth street a while back, resulting in a substantial change in atmosphere, making the district much more appealing to both visitors and merchants, alike. once vacant buildings are experiencing renovation and are being re-purposed to serve new lives as offices, retail businesses and eateries.

Following in the paths of reno's other “gentrified neighborhoods” – namely the riverwalk and midtown districts – the East Fourth street merchants hope to help shape reno's new reputation as a place which offers a variety of unique daytime and nightlife activities for both locals and visitors.

T he bars at Victorian Avenue aren’t new, hip or pretty. Rather, drinking here on a weekend night is like popping in on a sitcom about a big, weird, lovable family of bar owners and their kooky

neighborhood of regulars. Its welcoming, familiar, all-inclusive vibe is as local as it gets.

The vibe comes honest; most of them are family-owned establishments. But the tendency may be to call them “dives,” a gross underestimation that doesn’t do justice to the rich character of the community in this small, one-block collection of seven bars and restaurants that attracts a loyal, motley assortment of customers from the young to the very old, the tragically hip to the colorfully grizzled.

Things were just winding up when I started my Saturday evening on Victorian Avenue. Families and friends packed Cantina, Great Basin Brewery and Blind Onion for dinner and drinks, while a crowd of smokers was already congregating outside The Alley to wait for metal band She Has a Fashion Vice to play. A small group of hardcore regulars has already gathered at the Victorian Saloon, the district’s smoky grandfather.

“Oh, the Victorian’s been around for-ever,” says Melisa Laws, a bartender at O’Ski’s Pub & Grille, the Irish pub at the easternmost end of the strip. “That’s where we all go when we close down. They always hang around and wait for us.”

Laws says it’s so much like family at Victorian Avenue that a while back, when she had no childcare for two weeks, she ended up keeping her kids with employees on the block, who were all happy to oblige.

“Oh, it’s definitely like family here,” seconds Drew Cesar, the Victorian Saloon’s lead bartender. “I mean, since I’ve been here, we’ve only closed for two days that I know of, and one was for the wedding of two regulars we all know down here. None of us wanted to miss it, so we all closed that day.”

“I was a professor of literature at Humboldt State,” calls a voice from the end of the bar, apropos of nothing. Here is the source of my earlier “colorfully grizzled” comment. He’s been eavesdropping on my conversation. He gets up to join us, twitching and pulling up his pants.

“So we have things to discuss, you and I,” he continues. “You write. I write. You see?” He sniffs satisfactorily. In my whole family scenario, this would be the crazy uncle.

Next door at The Alley, the crowd is young, and on this particular night, has a rockabilly sensibility.

In its third year, The Alley sits on the former site of Vixens. Owner and music promoter Johnathan Chapin makes sure The Alley plays host to some of the best musical acts on tour, running the gamut from country artist Shooter Jennings (son of Waylon Jennings) to Reverend Horton Heat, Agent Orange, All-American Rejects and Built to Spill. Locals’ favorite bands like Saddle Tramps and Asphalt Socialites appear regularly.

On the other side of The Alley, Irish pub Paddy & Irene’s, the newcomer on the block, is very slowly but steadily building a following. Is O’Ski’s troubled that another Irish pub has joined its ranks? Nah. Melisa Laws says they all support each other here, root for each other.

Cantina will soon add another newbie to the mix. Owner Justin Quinton purchased the old Pacific Pawn building next door, had it razed, and will open an outdoor cafe with a Latin-influenced menu in its place. Completing the European vibe, dinner guests will be treated to live music and foreign films projected onto the side of the brick building.

By now, a crowd has formed at O’Ski’s. The dance music is cranked, all the tables are full, and I’m settling in with my second Irish coffee, one of the best I’ve ever had, and feeling very much at home.

B uilt in 1925 as a single bedroom home adjacent to the V&T Railroad (the tracks were about 15 feet from the house), the building at 1074 South Virginia Street ultimately became

known as the Zephyr Bar in 1979 - named after the Zephyrs, a local rugby team.

A classic “dive bar”, frequented by many over the years, the Zephyr succumbed to hard times and closed its doors after 30 years. The property's owner, Archie Granata, decided it was time for a re-birth of the Zephyr, so he and son K.J. began an extensive renovation in 2011. The concept? Re-position the Zephyr as “home of the craft cocktail”, catering to the professional crowd.

A bar is only as good as its bar staff, so Archie and K.J. set out to find someone who could fit the bill. That someone turned out to be Boyd Allen, who started out in the culinary industry in New York City, working in kitchens with a variety of chefs, where he learned about the importance of ingredients and taste. After stints as a bartender in places like New York, the Virgin Islands and Las Vegas – during which time he won some notable cocktail competitions. Boyd found himself in Reno for a job at an area ski resort. After meeting K.J., he saw the Zephyr as an opportunity to continue his profession of 25 years.

Ingredients play a huge role in the process of making the best, hand-crafted cocktails. “I start with fresh, local ingredients.” Boyd states. “When you start with fresh, you can't go wrong. Not using any refined sugars is a big deal for me, too. I use other ingredients which, unlike refined sugar, don't give you a hangover. I would never use anything that comes out of a paper bag. All my juices are fresh squeezed fresh, every day. I crush apples to make my own Applejack, then I mix it with other ingredients and use it to create cocktails.”

Boyd's approach to making great cocktails is much like that of a master chef. He and K.J. spend hours preparing ingredients each day. Fruit, nuts, purees, juices. . .it's all part of their ambition to create only the finest hand-crafted drinks. “You have nine thousand taste buds in your mouth, but you have a million olefactory sensors in your nose.” says Boyd. “So it's an all-encompassing approach to anything, much like food. The first thing that's going to hit you is the smell. For me, from the glassware to the way it hits your lip, to the top of your tongue and to the finish, all of those things play a huge part in what I do. You have to tinker with every single recipe, and you have to taste it with a straw before it goes over the bar. Period.”

K.J. has learned some things from working with Boyd. “I do whatever I'm told.” says K.J., who attended bartending school and was a bartender in Las Vegas, before returning to Reno in time for the re-opening of the Zephyr. “That was nothing. They didn't teach me anything, just working with a bunch of food coloring, things like that.” he states. His vision for the Zephyr was to have a classier place, with no smoking inside, and the result is exactly that.

Cocktails are a focus at the Zephyr, yet beer aficionados can find over 100 bottled beers behind the bar. “We also carry a few bottles of wine,” says Boyd, “but cocktails are our specialty, and that's what we're becoming known for.”

Recent changes at the Zephyr include a new color scheme on the outside of the building, windows on the Virginia Street side and the addition of a pool table. A spacious outdoor patio, complete with a fire pit, complements the bar. The biggest change, though, involves the name. Passersby will still see the classic “Zephyr” sign outside, but it'll be known as “The Z Bar”, officially.

Change, after all, is good. Very good, indeed.

W ouldn’t it be great, if. . .? That seemingly small question asked by the right person can lead to big things. And that’s just what’s happening to craft spirits thanks to a

few visionary Northern Nevadans who had enough gusto to act on an idea and who also happen to have a taste for fine vodka.

You wouldn’t be alone if you don’t immediately equate the high desert with premium vodkas. But here in the Comstock, we’re home to a number of craft vodkas fueling discerning imbibers’ demands for a higher level of sophistication. Trends reveal that while folks may drink less, but they are drinking better—evidenced by the surge in super-premium and ultra-premium vodka sales. Couple this with the “buy-local” movement and it’s no wonder these vodka-loving entrepreneurs are seizing the moment with their own take on a classic spirit.

tahoe Blue Vodka

It was during a Hawaiian vacation that Tahoe resident Matt Levitt thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a hand-crafted vodka that helped preserve Lake Tahoe?” And so it began. Tahoe Blue Vodka’s small batch distillation produces one of the smoothest, no aftertaste vodkas around. Drinking Tahoe Blue Vodka is like eating produce from a Farmer’s Market—it just tastes better. Founded two years ago, Tahoe Blue Vodka is produced by a family-owned distillery in the Bay Area which worked closely with Levitt to craft a unique blend of grapes, grain and sugarcane—as opposed to the more traditional single grain vodka. Not only does it taste good, but Tahoe Blue Vodka also does good by donating a portion of all proceeds to organizations that help keep Tahoe Blue. The vodka has already been recognized with awards at International Wine and Spirits Competitions and retails for $27 to $32 per bottle.

tinytiniJamie Asmis was at a local restaurant when she ordered her favorite specialty martini. Unfortunately, it was so poorly mixed she couldn’t drink it, especially considering the calories she’d be consuming. That experience inspired her to create a reduced calorie ready-to-drink specialty martini. The result is the first and only one of its kind—TinyTini. Many specialty martini drinks have upwards of 600 calories and require four to five ingredients. On the other hand, TinyTini is only 35 calories per ounce making a 3.5 ounce martini under 130 calories. Since its ready-to-drink, you don’t need additional ingredients and the resulting cocktail is consistent. Brought to market in 2012, TinyTini currently offers four flavors: chocolate, pear, cotton candy and pomegranate. Crafted in Denver, CO, TinyTini retails for $14.99—enough to pour six specialty martinis.

Gera Vodka Of the four partners involved in bringing Gera Vodka to the market, one just happened to be visiting his homeland, Lithuania, when a distillery there called Alita asked if he’d help bring their vodka to the US. The spirit, now known as Gera Vodka, had just received an elite international patent called OCTAL for its eight step distillation process. During one of the steps, oxygen is infused into the Eastern European grain liquor to remove impurities. The result is one of the finest vodkas in the world—recognized as such by the International Review of Spirits which gave Gera Vodka the only Platinum Award and 96 points two years running. Knight International, located in Reno, is the owner of the brand rights in US and is now shipping internationally. Distributed by Encore Beverage, it retails between $9.99 and $24.99, depending on size.

Black dot Vodka George Buddy, of Black Dot Vodka, has had a love of vodka for many years. Typically, vodka is distilled with potatoes, rye or wheat. But what sets Black Dot apart is its century-old recipe using a yellow corn base that’s smoothed out with a hint of cherry. It’s a standalone, super smooth vodka for those who like it straight. Black Dot is a collaboration between award-winning Wisconsin-based craft distillers to produce proprietary, rewarding vodka. Buddy explained that he and the other founders of Black Dot aren’t celebrities, rappers, or 12th generation distillers. “We’re just four industry lightweights with a never-ending passion to make and share a fine cocktail,” he said. Black Dot is sold throughout Nevada for about $25 per bottle.

When planning a night on the town, take some time to plan for getting home at the end of the evening. Planning ahead could save you trouble, your job, possibly $15,000 to $20,000 and, maybe, your life (or the lives of others).

Practice PreventionDUI is a very preventable crime, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen. If you know you’re going to be drinking alcohol at an event, take the time to figure out not just how you’re going to get there, but how you’re going to get home.

Nationwide, .08 blood alcohol content means you’re legally impaired. You can be stopped for a moving or nonmoving violation, which means if you decided not to drive and pulled over to sleep, you’re still in the vehicle with the ability to drive. You can even be arrested for up to two hours after you stop driving if your BAC still shows .08.

What haPPens nextIf you are stopped for driving under the influence, try not to panic. Be polite and cooperative but don’t volunteer anything. Don’t state you’ve been drinking or how much, and don’t volunteer to take field sobriety tests. The only test you’re required to take, by state law, is the breath test, says attorney Walter Fey. For any other field sobriety tests, ask whether it’s a request or a directive. If it’s a request, you can refuse.

Fail the breath test and you go to jail. First DUI, or first in seven years, is treated as a misdemeanor. If you’ve already had two or more, you’re looking at felony charges.

Once you’re booked into the jail – mug shot, finger prints – you’ll find a list of bail bondsmen, says Brian Johnson, owner, Able Bail Bonds. The court can choose to release you on your own recognizance, which means checking in daily or weekly with the court, or require you to make bail. The court may also require an ignition interlock (breath test) installed in your car (at your expense).

If you post bail you’ll pay 15 percent of $2,000 for your first DUI, $5,000 for your second, and the third, a felony, starts at $15,000.

There are two proceedings with DUI – criminal court, and DMV administrative proceedings. It’s imperative to hire an attorney to represent you because courts are not allowed to reduce the charges in a DUI case.

Most legal defenses are based on procedural error, according to Fey. Maybe the breath test was performed wrong or the blood test was refused by the driver and administered anyway.

While your defense is being assembled by your attorney, you may obtain a restricted license that allows you to drive to work. Attending a victim impact panel and/or DUI school may convince the court to view you in a better light. In addition, attorney Joey Gilbert says, if you’re not willing to take action to help yourself, he’s not willing to work with you.

Back to schoolYou can also be court-ordered to attend DUI school, which can last anywhere from an eight-meeting course to one year. Counselors work to help participants understand and solve the problems their alcohol use is creating. Many participants only enroll under

protest, but the counseling is reasonably priced and offers a chance to get back on track.

“The challenge for the client is to find a counselor they can connect with and who cares about them,” says Richard Klain, certified alcohol and drug counselor. “A lot of the time they think we’re in it for the money. I want them to understand I’m here for them.”

the $10,000 night outA DUI can cost a lot in time and money. First DUI conviction carries a $750 fine in Washoe County, with automatic revocation of license for 90 days and, if there isn’t a sober passenger onboard, your car will be towed and impounded.

Getting your license reinstated isn’t automatic. Your auto insurance rates will skyrocket and some carriers will drop any member who gets a DUI, leaving only the option of very expensive insurance. You’ll need an attorney, and you may have to post bail.

Once you’re found guilty in court, you face fines of up to $1,000 for a misdemeanor and $2,000 to $5,000 for a felony. There are court costs and DUI school fees, and up to six months in jail (or community service).

“For people with jobs like law enforcement or with the airlines, a DUI won’t be looked upon in the best light,” says Gilbert. “For the everyday person it’s going to be a big inconvenience. But you were on the road in a manner which could harm or kill someone.”

A little advance planning or, failing that, a $40 cab ride, is by far the cheaper alternative.

We make a large selection of butters, bitters, and non-re� ned sweeteners. � e two bene� ts of these all natural and non-re� ned sweeteners is they enhance the � avors of the base spirits and have no congeners.

At � e Z Bar we say “from our kitchen to your glass” and we mean it. We work really hard to ensure every drink is clean, crisp and extremely well balanced.

Our cocktails change often. Sometimes our patrons are disappointed that the cocktail they love is out of season. We would rather disappoint by not making the requested cocktail than by making a disappointing cocktail.
