The Renold precision steel roller chain is ahighly efficient and versatile means oftransmitting mechanical power, which, in thefield of industrial applications, has almostcompletely superseded all other types of chainpreviously used.

The illustration below shows component partsof the outer link and of the inner link of aRenold simple roller chain.

As illustrated, the Renold precision steel rollerchain consists of a series of journal bearingsheld in precise relationship to each other bythe constraining link plates. Each bearingconsists of a bearing pin and bush on whichthe chain roller revolves. The bearing pin andbush are case hardened to allow articulationunder high pressures, and to contend with theload carrying pressures and gearing actionimparted via the chain rollers.

All chains are classified according to pitch(the distance between the centres of adjacentbearing pins), roller diameter and widthbetween inner plates. Collectively, thesedimensions are known as the gearingdimensions, as they determine the form andwidth of the sprocket teeth.

Standard links

The chain parts and connecting links illustratedare only indicative of the types available.Please refer to the appropriate product pagefor the parts relevant to individual chains.

These are complete assemblies for use with allsizes and types of chain. The unit consists oftwo inner plates pressed on to the busheswhich carry the rollers. (Inner links for use withbush chains have no rollers).

For use with all sizes and types of chain whereoptimum security is desired. The link is suppliedwith bearing pins riveted into one outer plate.The other outer plate is an interference fit onthe bearing pins, the ends of which should beriveted over after the plate is fitted.

Press fit connecting links should only be used once; new links must be used to replace dismantled links. (See 'Riveting Chain Endless'for full instructions).

A connecting link supplied with two connectingpins riveted into the outer plate. The outerplate is a clearance fit on the connecting pinsand is secured in position by a split pin throughthe projecting end of each connecting pin.

Used on short pitch chains only. Supplied withtwo connecting pins riveted into the outerplate, the clearance fit connecting plate beingsecured by means of a spring clip, No. 27,which snaps into the grooves in the pins.

The standard connecting link for ANSI seriesdetachable chains, also used on riveted chainswhere high speeds or arduous conditions areencountered. Supplied with two connectingpins riveted into the outer plate, the otherouter plate being a press fit onto the pins andsecured by split pins after assembly.

Press fit connecting links can only be usedonce; new links must always be used to replacedismantled links.

Cranked links

Apart from the specialised chains where thecranked link is an essential design feature,cranked links are used only where the chainlength must be an odd number of pitches. Thispractice is not recommended; all drives should,wherever possible, be designed with sufficientoverall adjustment to ensure the use of aneven number of pitches throughout the chain.DO NOT USE CRANKED LINKS ON IMPULSIVE,HIGHLY LOADED OR HIGH SPEED DRIVES.

A single link with cranked plates pressed onto abush and roller assemble at the narrow end. Aclearance fit connecting pin (No. 128) is fittedat the wide end and is secured by a split pin.

Double cranked links are available for most sizesand types of chain. The unit consists of aninner link (No. 4), with cranked links retainedpermanently in position by a riveted bearing pin.

Screw operated extractors break chain by forcingthe Renold end softened bearing pins out of the outer link plates. For other brands of chain, the rivet swell must first be ground away.

Outer Link: for high speed drives or drives operating in arduous conditions aproperly riveted outer link (No 107) mustalways be used for optimum security, in preference to any other form of chainjoint. The use of other connectors andcranked links (No 12 and No 30) mustalways be restricted to light duty, non-critical applications, in drives where anodd number of pitches is absolutelyunavoidable. Wherever possible, drivesshould have sufficient overall adjustmentto ensure the use of an even number ofpitches throughout the useful life of thechain. A cranked link joint should only beused as a last resort.
