HOURS AND LOCATIONS

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

LETTER FROM DIRECTORDear Friends,

“We’re all in this together.” The phrase rings true at every level for Columbus Humane—from the tippy top of our mission of bringing people and pets together all the way down to tackling the everyday challenges of running a fast-paced, lifesaving animal shelter. Collaboration is more than a core brand value, it’s our practice. Take a look at just a few ways that we partner to bring success to the people and animals of Central Ohio:

Cruelty Investigations Our agents rely on complaints made by concerned citizens throughout our community. We are able to protect abused and neglected animals and get them to safety; as well as hold abusers accountable, because of the kind actions taken by those willing to report. Our investigations team also routinely partners with other local law enforcement agencies like Columbus Division of Police, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, local health departments and departments of Agriculture at the State and national levels.

Veterinary Services As a supporter, you know Columbus Humane partners with The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Continued on Page 3....

We’re proud to host every fourth year veterinary student for a two week rotation in surgery and medicine in our hospital. Did you also know that we partner with local nonprofit rescue groups to provide low cost adoption readiness services for their animals like spay/neuter, vaccinations and more? Additionally, we partner with local feral cat colony caretakers to reduce the population of free-roaming cats in our community by offering free spay and neuter services for these cats. If you know of a rescue group or feral cat caretaker that can use our help, please let us know!

Volunteers Providing almost 35,000 hours annually, our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. We also offer one-time service opportunities to groups. Check out page 4 to learn more about the work of these incredible people.

Of course, everything that we do here at Columbus Humane is made possible by our partnership with YOU! Generous gifts make up the overwhelming majority of our funding. That means you provide everything from the food and veterinary care right down to the belly rubs. You make Columbus Humane.

Many thanks for your partnership,

Rachel D.K. Finney, CAWA Executive Director

COLLABORATION IS MORE THAN A CORE BRAND

VALUE, IT’S OUR PRACTICE.

We are so fortunate at Columbus Humane to have some incredible

numbers working in our favor:

In 2017, we had 484 active volunteers spending 33,788 service hours assisting over 8,000 animals! Our volunteers are tremendous people who add so much value to the organization through animal enrichment, transports, fostering, photography, office work, events and DOG WALKING! We simply could not do this work without their commitment to our animals. Each and every one of them embodies our core values: Innovation, Collaboration, Expertise, and Endurance.

Our innovative animal enrichment program – Freedom from Boredom – was implemented last year to give all of the animals in our care opportunities to stretch mentally, physically and emotionally with the intent of preventing behavioral decline. This program, which involves interactive toys, time out of the kennel, and quiet time through various activities, is only as successful as the staff and volunteers that implement it. “We are always looking for new activities that cater to the different needs of each dog in our care, especially our long term residents. These are the dogs that inspired recent additions to the program, such as read-a-book kennel enrichment and canine massage. By having a variety of enrichment options, our dogs get personalized attention, making their stay at Columbus Humane as enjoyable as possible,” said Kara Holland, volunteer. And it is not just for dogs! Our amazing cat care volunteers work hard to make sure our kitties get lots of love outside of their cages.

Our volunteers also use their expertise to help with more than direct animal care. They generously provide hours to help us organize special events, silent auctions, taking photos

Columbus Humane’s volunteer program is bar none. To have more than

450 people dedicating almost 35,000 hours

in one year to take care of animals every day of the week is an amazing thing to see.

Schoedinger Pets is proud to partner with

Columbus Humane on this remarkable

program, where highly trained and committed

volunteers give love and support to the animals

who need it most.

Volunteering isn’t new to me – I have donated my time, energy,

and expertise to variety of organizations throughout the years, but as a new volunteer to Columbus Humane, I have discovered how empowering

this experience has been for me! Sure, I expected

that warm and fuzzy feeling from spending time with the

animals, but what I didn’t expect was to be pushed, in a sense, outside of my comfort

zone a bit and succeed.

of our adoptable animals, greeting guests at the shelter and even spend some time helping out in the office! If you can think of a task, we can think of a volunteer who has helped us out with it.

Not only do volunteers help with routine tasks, they never turn down a call for help when it is needed most. There have been multiple instances throughout the year when volunteers have jumped at the chance to collaborate with staff on emergency situations – from flooding to cleaning carriers to help with a hoarding case.

As we draw closer to National Volunteer Appreciation Week in April, we wanted to acknowledge and thank every single of one of our volunteers for their dedication, their selflessness and their endurance. The smiling faces that our animals and our staff get to spend time with on a day to day basis keep us all moving forward.

As we shared with you in our last newsletter, our renovation is happening. We are breaking up the construction into multiple phases so stay up to date with all of the changes and what you can expect when you visit on our Facebook page and in our monthly e-news. We anticipate the renovation to be complete in October 2018.

CHANGES ARE HAPPENING!

Do you know an Eagle Scout who goes above and beyond for animals in his community? Well, we do! Bryce Thompson spent countless hours building and distributing almost 20 feral cat houses, working with our humane agents to place them in the community. He also raised over $1,000 for our animals! Thank you Bryce! You are an example to us all.

Safe Haven is a program we are tremendously proud of and humbled by, here at Columbus Humane. Safe Haven provides shelter, food, medical care, and most of all, LOVE for the pets of those dealing with domestic violence situations. Research tells us many do not leave abusive situations if they are afraid of what will become of their pets. We are honored to partner with CHOICES, Central Ohio’s domestic violence shelter, to administer this program and to plan for animals to be incorporated in their new shelter.

BUSTA RINDSFound as a stray back in August 2017. Busta was adopted in September 2017 by loving parents who are working with him to become a therapy pig and are happy to report, “Busta is a magical unicorn of laughs and drama!”

SASSYSassy was brought in by humane agents through a search warrant. Sassy is a small, sweet, fuzzy dachshund mix that could not defend herself against her abuser, but got lots of love and attention at Columbus Humane and was adopted in October 2017.

PUFFYSurrendered in July 2017 when his loving dad lost his home. Puffy was pretty stressed and went on a hunger strike, but with lots of love and attention from all of our staff, he rebounded and was finally adopted in all of his glory in time for Christmas.

GRACIE (FORMERLY QUEEN)Surrendered in December 2017. Gracie is loving her new forever home and her family has shared that her newly discovered talents include, “knowing the tax code better than our last accountant and loving the music of classical pianist Glenn Gould.”

THOR Thor was brought in by our humane agents in September 2017. He became a perfect example of how well our animal enrichment program works for some dogs. He was adopted by a volunteer’s family and they reported he was the best “first day” dog they’ve ever had.

REUNITED!Our kitty friend, Boots, had been missing from his home for two months, when his owners checked Pet FBI Ohio and saw our feline friend had been brought to Columbus Humane! The reunion was a happy one!
