THURMAN STATION WILDERNESS HERITAGE

CORRIDOR SHOWCASE, JULY 27, 11 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

Three Towns, One Goal. Thurman Station - We struggled to f indust the right name for the Showcase, says Thurman Station

Association president Perky Granger. We wanted it to bothdescribe the event and also pinpoint our location in this corridor

so rich in traditions of trains, trade and tourism. The event (itsname often abbreviated as, Thurman Station Showcase) will

present a cast of approximately 40 folksmostly fromWarrensburg, Stony Creek and Thurmanrepresenting

businesses, arts and organizations whose goods and services reflect

he heritage of the area and illustrate the rich creativity of thehree-town region surrounding the station. Geared for visitors of

all ages, some arriving by train and others by car, the Showcase

will be held at Thurman Station, 1883 Stony Creek Road, Thurman.Guests will find sales and samples of local foods, such as naturally

produced maple goods, meats and nationally-acclaimed cheeses;restaurant and B&B specialties to tempt the palate; and artistic

creationssuch as paintings, jewelry, rustic wares, gardenaccessories and hand-spun yarn to please the eye. Many

exhibitors plan demonstrations, some interactive, such as waterdowsing , craft projects and Warren County Soil and Waters

model river complete with flowing water, which shows howrivers evolve and change, especially when man meddles. The

Adirondack Museum will exhibit information about the stampsonce used to identify owners of logs sent downriver, and will host

a stamping activity; Milda Burns of North River will tell of thedrives, once supervised by her father. Nancy Kimball, wildlife

rehabilitator, will bring birds of prey and tell about their habits

and role in the regional wildlife scene. Local history will berepresented by Warren County Historical Society, WarrensburghMuseum of Local History and the John Thurman Historical

Society all with publications and photos, including the WarrenCounty Bicentennial traveling exhibits for each of the three towns.

Saratoga & North Creek Railway will host a table, as will FirstWilderness Heritage Corridor.

While visitors browse the vending areas at the Station and acrosshe road at Adirondack Ambiance, Dan Berggren and Ed Lowman

will perform regional folk music (11 3), and actor Phil Jessen ofHartford, well-known in our area for his portrayals of Abraham

Lincoln, will present a monologue while reenacting early Thurmanresident Stephen Griffing, on whose 1800s farm the Showcase

will be held (12:30). Kate Sullivan of Froggy 101.7 will broadcastive from the Showcase from 11 to 1. Raffle tickets will be available

for three items: a rustic gift basket stuffed with local productsand certificates, valued at over $200; an all-cotton quilt made by

Avis Russell; and the post and beam frame for a garden shed,handcrafted by Andy LeBlanc of Barn Works, all to benefit

Thurman Station Association. Both Russell and LeBlanc will beplying their craft at the Showcase, and other vendors will have

NINTH ANNUAL CARDBOARD BOAT RACE HudsonCrossing Park presents its 9th Annual Cardboard Boat Race onSaturday, August 10th (rain date Sunday, August 11th) at FortHardy Park Beach on Route 29 in Schuylerville from 8am to 3pm.

The first race launches at 1pm and best photo opportunities arebetween 12pm and 2pm. Admission is free for spectators. Pre-

What do you do with an abandoned railwaystation? Demolish it? What could it possibly be

good for?

Well, Bob Kellogg, President of Warren Tire was

looking for a location that could service

Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Fair Haven, Comstock,

North Granville, Hampton, Granville, Poultney,

Fort Ann and other nearby areas.

When a Realtor suggested the abandoned rail-

way station in Whitehall, Bob was concerned

about the soundness of the building. So, he had it thoroughly inspected and when it

was deemed safe, he converted it to a 4 bay tire sales and service center, which is

scheduled to open August 1, 2013. This makes the 16th Warren Tire Service Center in

the area. The first center was started by Bobs father, Wayne Kellogg, at 92 Warren

Street in Glens Falls in 1983. The second center was opened in Clifton Park, a move that

helped launch the company into a major competitor in upstate New York.

As mentioned above, Bob serves as President of the company, Wayne is CEO, Bobs

sister, Denise Potter, is Vice President and Don Villa is General Manager. Together they

have grown the company to the 16 stores, with tire sales in excess of 60,000 units

annually. They started out with Goodyear and added many other brands, including:

Michelin, Dunlop, BF Goodrich, Kelly, Continental, General, Uniroyal, Firestone,

Bridgestone, Perelli, Yokohama and Nokian.

Their store in Whitehall will be handling all those brands for all kinds of vehicles, such

as trucks, cars, tractors, ATVs and more!

The family is extremely proud of their tire stores, and they are equally proud of their

service centers which accompany each store. Their service centers provide full service

for all makes and models of vehicles. So, the Whitehall service center will be happy to do

oil changes, alignments, adjust and replace brakes, do NY inspections, provide mufflers,

do full diagnostic tests, figure out that pesky check engine light, and provide just about

every other repair or accessory you may

need or want.

CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS- Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to

exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at home at the 2013 Warren

County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 10th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. Inaddition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the

New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range

from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources,

vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for

specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University

Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thurs-

day. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the

fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged based on

the capability of the youth, and not by comparing one youth and/or exhibit against another (re ferred

to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will

be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain

appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhib-

its must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 10th from 9:00AM to 4:00PM at the

THE CCC CONTINUES TO REACH FOR THE STARS. The Salem Courthouse Community

Centers newest club, the Salem Astronomers, is in its second year and continues to grow in popularity.

Under the direction of Bill Frederick, the club has attracted much interest and has a growing

membership. The club meets at the CCC at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of each month with the

objective of sharing a common interest in astronomy and learning more about the cosmos. Bill is a

hands-on club director emailing members daily wi th updates so they can navigate their way through

the night skies. Guest speakers of interest are invited regularly, and Bill has offered members the

opportunity to observe the night sky using the powerful telescope at his home. New members are

NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washing-ton County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores inWashington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in trans-portation are documented by period photographs and artifacts.Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers whoalso remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences.Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the ChamplainCanal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south toAlbany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved toaccommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways todispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included woodenboxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, nocorrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothingof plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and dis-

tance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general storeswould take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cartwith horse could be rented by an individual or small businessfrom a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoachescould carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and somemail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general storesprovided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stockingthe General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednes-days and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through No-vember. GHOST CARAVAN REGISTERING GUESTS FOR TOUR OF THURMAN SITES; Thurmantation Association (TSA), announces that registration is now open for participation in its August7th Historical Hauntings of Thurman Ghost Tour: A Journey through Time ($20). This ghostaravan will meet at Thurman town hall and wend its way to four sites in that town where paranormalctivity has been experienced and recorded by Sally Feihel of Adirondack Spectral Investigations.

Feihel, who organized her group to provide free help to property owners who seek explanations for

therwise inexplicable happenings in their homes, will lead a morning and afternoon tour that day.The morning group will assemble at 10 a.m. at Thurman town hall, and guests will follow Feihel inheir own vehicles to four sites where they will hear about the investigat ions conducted there and bencouraged to open themselves up to the sensation of lingering presences. Ride sharing is encouraged,ue to limited parking space at sites. The afternoon group is asked to arrive at town hall by noon,nd from noon to 2 p.m. both groups will be served light refreshments and see a demonstration of thevidence-collecting equipment used by Feihel and view some of the recordings taken at area sites.

The afternoon tour will caravan out at 2 p.m., returning at 4. Feihel encourages those interested toign up early, and will offer a discounted fee of $15 for those registering at Thurman Stationhowcase on July 27 (1883 Stony Creek Road, Thurman, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or a discount of $3

RE: ORAL HISTORY PROJECT The Warren County HistoricalSociety will be conducting oral history interviews during the RuralHeritage Festival and Youth Fair at the Warren County Fairgroundsin Warrensburg, NY on August 10th. The Warren CountyHistorical Society is searching for individuals who would like toparticipate and are specifically interest in talking with individualswho have some knowledge in three specific areas: World War II Memories: We are looking for individuals whohave memories of The Home Front during WWII (1941-45). Doyou remember Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the election of 1944, andFDRs death? Also do you remember V-E Day and V-J Day,rationing, victory gardens, movies, songs, etc.? Fairs in Warren County: We are interested in talking withindividuals who remember the various County Fairs inWarrensburg and perhaps other locations through the 1960s. Churches: We are looking for individuals who have an interestin the importance of churches in the development of a community.It would be especially interesting to learn why a particularcongregation formed in a particular community, and what influencethe people of the church had on the community, and the role ofthe church in creating a gathering place for people to meet forsocial events. Historical Society has secured the services of auctioneerextraordinaire Martin Seelye to hold an old fashioned country

auction at the second annual Rural Heritage Festival & YouthFair, to be held on Saturday, August 10 at the Warren County

Fairgrounds in Warrensburg. The society is looking for donationsof such items as: antique farm & garden tools; period kitchen &

glassware; small farm machinery, old toys and games; postcardsand photographs; period and regional craft work, to include old

lacework and linens, braided and woven rugs, quilts; traditionalAdirondack work such as baskets, furniture, lampshades, and

quilling; old baskets, fishing gear & flies, etc. If you would like tosupport the historical society by contributing items for the raffle,
