Cooling Down Schools - Nanakuli HSThanks to Broadway Singer Loretta Ables Sayre who graciously set a goal of raising money to buy 250 fans for Nanakuli High School. She works with the Nanakuli Performing Arts Academy as a vocal coach and has a personal interest in helping the students in Nanakuli.

Cooling Down Schools - Nanakuli ElemAfter classrooms were given their fans at Nanakuli High School, the remaining fans were shared with Nanakuli Elementary. Nanakuli High School and Elementary are scheduled for electrical upgrades. Nanakuli Elementary has one building that is air conditioned and uses white roofs on the portables to stay cool.

Cooling Down Schools - NanaikaponoNanaikapono is a centrally air conditioned school that has windows meant for A/C. Last year their A/C unit was desperately in need of repair. Principal Knight has shared that they have been getting a lot of support from DOE facilities regarding repairs and that this year they have not had the A/C break down. They are still in need of an upgraded central air system.

Cooling Down Schools - Ka WaihonaKa Waihona has PV solar panels on most of their building and air conditioning in all of the classrooms. They are a charter school and lease their land from DHHL. They receive school funding support from the charter school commission, OHA, Kamehameha Schools, and other sources.

“Cool Our Keiki”There will be a rally on September 10th at 9am in front of the DOE building on Miller Street by Gigi Jones who started a FB group called “Cool Our Keiki”

Make some signs and come down and show your support. We will be meeting from 9-11 am and again from 3-5 pm.

This is a statewide effort. We will be marching for ALL of the schools in Hawai'i. If you are on another island and would like to post pictures of your support, we would love to see that! If you would like a sign made and carried on your behalf, please let us know. We will try to have a sign for each island!

Endless Summer Resort

Meeting with Chad Waters (September 25, 2015)I will meet with him to do a community presentation in regards to his new upcoming project.

Kolekole PassOn July 10th, 2015, Navy, Department of Defense, and Department of Emergency Management agree to amend language to the Memorandum of Agreement for the use of Kolekole pass in the event of an emergency.

On July 23rd, I took a tour of the pass and we drove 3 vans and truck from the entrance to the Army gate. It is driveable. A one way option may work.

On September 3, 2015, Department of Defense gives the update that the October signing of the MOA - Memorandum of Agreement is on track barring any unforeseen circumstances. They DOD and the Army are in favor of opening Kolekole on a more frequent basis. I will be meeting with Navy Facilities, Admiral Fuller, Congresswoman Gabbard, and other regarding the Navy portion of the road that needs maintenance.

❖ I’ve met with the Food Giant/Nanakuli Super owners and they are open having the bus stop in front of their property closer to the crosswalk

❖ DTS is in favor of moving the bus stop down so there is no midblock crosswalk❖ DOT is over placement of bus stops and Pratt Kinimaka is working with Ed on this

option

Synchronization of LightsLights have been synchronized from Piliokahi to Auyoung in January. The lights have been lengthened from 3:20 (4pm-6pm) to 4:00 minutes of green (3pm-7pm).

Manual Synchronization is not a one time event. Only electronically controlled systems set to traffic patterns can adjust and even those need to be reset. Nimitz has the only remotely controlled system set to traffic patterns. (Info from Panos Prevederous)

Major Kendro from D8 has sent officers out to monitor the intersections. The Nanakuli/Farrington and Haleakala/Farrington lights are not set to 4:00 minutes of green. Haleakala and Helelua have run up to 7 minutes of green when there are no cars. Motorist are abiding by the No Left Turn at the park. Turns in Ka Waihona does not appear to be a contributing factor. Lights fall out of sync for less than a complete cycle before the go green again.

Meeting with Ty Fukumitsu (808-768-8387) Sept. 18, 2015.

Synchronization of Lights Solutions1) Get Ty to resync the lights and ensure AT LEAST the 4 minutes from 3-7pm for the

Nanakuli and Haleakala Lights.2) Have the resync happen frequently enough until we can get a computerized system

that coordinates with the other lights.3) Freeway Service Patrol for the stretch from Kapolei into Nanakuli. The stalling of

vehicles in the afternoon hours can have hours of consequences. I am working with DOT and a local towing company to explore the possibilities.

4) Studying a longterm solution as suggested in the Transportationist.org: ALWAYS GREEN TRAFFIC CONTROL.

Always Green Traffic Control

Haleakala 4 way stopI met with Kalei Young however he is not over infrastructure for Department of Hawaiian Homelands. This would be an issue for Norman Sakamoto at DHHL. I am meeting with them in regards to acquisition of the bridge to nowhere and will ask about the 4-way stop. Meeting with Norman Sakamoto from DHHL (Sept. 15, 2015)

Bike PathWe have done 3 community clean ups on Pa’akea in preparation.

Waiʻanae Coast Comprehensive Health Center is donating the design. HECO donated the signage for “No Dumping”. Local 368 (they did the Malaekahana Bike Path) has donated the quotes. Mikilua Farmers have donated the service and help with posting signage. Hawaiian Dredging will help to do the prep work. PVT and Pineridge will be donating the wrap or the material that goes under the asphalt. Grace Pacific will donate the hauling of the asphalt and the labor.

We are looking for a bike path non-profit that can be the financing holding entity for the purchasing of the asphalt.
