CATHOLIC ADULT EDUCATION: BAPTISM!

What is it? Why did sin-less Jesus get bap zed? What difference does it

make that I am bap zed? Come explore these ques ons with Br. Louis Khoury, OFM, on : Saturday, Feb 28, 2015; 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Both sessions will be held in the Parish Chapel and are free for all.

Lent [264.1] is the season of prepara on for Christ’s Resurrec on at Easter; it is for many Catholics a special

me for prayer, fas ng and renewed spiritual focus. The Essen al Lenten Handbook: this book provides every-thing you need for a richer experience of the 40 days be-fore Easter. It has contemporary and tradi onal re-sources for your spiritual journey. Biblical Medita ons for Lent by Rev. Carroll Stuhlmueller CP: is a classic that offers daily prayerful reflec ons on the readings of the Lenten season. A Lenten Pilgrimage by Rev. Richard Chil-son CSP: follows the journey of the candidates in the Rite of Chris an Ini a on. It encourages all to explore the meaning of the catechumenate and what it means to be fully Chris an. Chocolate for Lent by Hilary Brand: uses themes from the movie ‘Chocolat’ to promote deeper insight into self discipline, self giving, conversion, ac-ceptance and maturing in Christ. Even if you gave up Chocolate for Lent, this is a tasty treat.

L I V I N G T H E E U C H A R I S T There is s ll me to join us!

Living the Eucharist is a new Lenten re-newal program which deepens par cipa-

on in the Mass and involves Catholics in the evangeliz-ing mission of the Church. Living the Eucharist is an exci ng new parish-based re-newal experience designed to help parishes’ foster spir-itual growth and discipleship through a more profound experience of Sunday Mass. Living the Eucharist runs during Lent, and encompasses the full scope of parish life and spirituality through prac-

cal, concrete ac vi es and resource materials. It helps the en re parish— adults, teens, and families—grow in their faith and live as disciples of Jesus who carry out the Church’s mission every day.

Join us during Lent on: MONDAYS: Feb. 23, March 2, 9, 16 & 23.

Day Session: 2:00 p.m./Evening session: 6:30 p.m. Parish Dining Rm.

FROM THE PASTOR…

Mary Oliver’s poem, *The Messenger, holds a Stew-ardship message for Lent. She says, “My work is loving the world…let me keep my mind on what ma ers, which is my work, which is mostly standing s ll and learning to be astonished.” Mary goes on to talk about rejoicing and gra tude. She exhorts us to “give shouts of joy”, telling all of crea on, “over and over, how it is that we live for-ever.” Beneath the idea of ashes, of giving up, is hidden this idea of Lenten joy. Coming closer to Jesus. Standing s ll and spending me in prayer, in hope and in love of the Lord and the marvels of crea on. We are asked for forty days to open our hearts to focus more intently upon Christ and his promise to us. Everlas ng life! Joy eter-nal! These are not small, or empty promises. Jesus in-vites us to engage the world as lovers. To be the pres-ence of Jesus, praying and ac ng in ways that bring Christ’s love to others. The staffs of the Parish, Retreat Center and Franciscan School of Theology have been working hard to create programs for Lent that will help you on this forty day journey. My prayer for you is to take advantage of one or more of these during Lent. And if you would like to take a step towards solidarity with the poor and needy in the larger Church, please consider joining us in pledging to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. For those who have already given, my thanks for your generosity and love.

Yours in Christ

Fr. David

*The Messenger

My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird — equal

seekers of sweetness. Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.

Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?

Am I no longer young, and s ll not half-perfect? Let me keep my mind on what ma ers, which is my

work, which is mostly standing s ll and learning to be astonished. The phoebe, the delphinium. The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture. Which is mostly rejoicing, since all ingredients are here, which is gra tude, to be

given a mind and a heart and these body-clothes, a mouth with which to give shouts of joy to the moth

and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam, telling them all, over and over, how it is that we live forever.

DIOCESE MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY

The Diocese of San Diego is invi ng Catholics to imag-ine a world where mental illness has lost its s gma – and to help bring that world into being, one parish at a

me. The San Diego Diocesan Mental Health Ministry Network has been created to accomplish that goal. The Parish Advisory Board is looking for volunteers who would like to be a part of this process for Mission San Luis Rey Parish and to coordinate this effort with the Dio-cese. The Diocese is offering abundant training and support for all those who are interested, for both the Liaison & Leadership role now and for future volunteers. Interested in learning more? Please contact Laura Chun of the Parish Advisory Board at 760-726-2486.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England on August 1, 1907. Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebra on in the middle 1940s. The Scout Sunday tradi on was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scou ng, and to allow Scouts to live out their "Duty to God" pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a "Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their "Duty to God". These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith. Scouts are invited and encouraged to wear their uni-forms to their places of worship to bring awareness of the Scou ng program to other families and to celebrate this special day. If you would like more informa on about the Scout of America, please call Ben Russell at 760-473 9213

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fas ng may be a priority in your Lenten spring-cleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradi on recognizes that fas ng is a key to heightened spiritual awareness. You know this from your own experience. When you are engaged in a hobby, pain ng a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What you are do-ing so fills you that the intensity of the ac on is itself nourishing. In fas ng from food, or drink, or habitual be-haviors, you make room for what is truly important. Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will no ce traces of fas ng in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a no cea-ble drop in the number of infant bap sms as parents elect to wait un l Easter. This hints that fas ng is a prel-ude to feas ng, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare a er a long silence. In the same way, even a small fast—no cream in the coffee, no pepper in the soup, no radio in the car—can not only point to deeper hungers, but help us rejoice more fully in the feast when we break our fast together.

Lenten Journey with Bill Bischoff—Saturday, February 28, 2015. The me of the Lenten journey is an opportunity for le ng go. This me for le ng go is mirrored for us in the gos-pel accounts of Jesus' final journey to Jerusalem. During this journey we witness in Jesus' stories, miracles and most im-portantly his rela onships. He was preparing himself, and his followers in le ng go of everything in order to enter into his passion, death and resurrec on. Spend a day reflec ng on Jesus' journey as he models for us the ways of le ng go. He models how to let go of cares, bur-dens and sorrows, so we can use our Lenten journey as a place of healing and reflec on as we journey toward the peace and light of Easter. Cost: $45 per person, lunch included.

LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fas ng (the ea ng of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in between snacks) applies to those be-tween ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fas ng. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abs nence (the exclusion of meat for the en re day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abs nence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a me for us to voluntarily choose to do pen-ance and mor fica on as an expression of gra tude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an a empt to respond to the love that He so willingly gave to us.

AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA
