It also marked the winding up of 125 th birth centenary celebration of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj which commenced last year. During this period, the Institute successfully organized a number of programmes in the campus and different parts of the country with special focus on younger generation. The following is a brief account of the important activities undertaken during the year. 1. One Year Post Graduate Diploma Course in Gandhian Thought The Post Graduate Diploma Course of this academic year commenced on the first week of July, 2015. Eleven students were admitted to the course, of which three from abroad and the rest from India. The students from abroad include one from Sudan and two from Nepal. The students from India were from the States of Manipur, Assam, Orissa, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The resource persons/faculty of the Diploma Course consist of Justice Shri C.S. Dharmadhikari, Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dr. Ramchandra Pradhan, Prof. Suresh Pandhripande, Prof. Jeevankumar and many others. This Diploma consists of 8 courses, each having 4 credits combining both practical and theoretical aspects and it follows the grading system. The theoretical part covers Gandhi’s life and central philosophy, political, economic, social thoughts of Gandhi and Peace studies. In addition, students would be required to prepare a dissertation on a subject under the broad umbrella of Gandhian Studies. The course also gives credit to practical work including spinning and agriculture, field work in villages, Gandhian and constructive organizations. Beside academic pursuits, it provides an opportunity to experience a disciplined way of life with prayer, yoga, meditation, and devotional music, day-to-day maintenance of a diary, manual and other works related to the management of the community. In the month of February, the students went on a field work/study visit in Chitrakoot area of Madhya Pradesh. They visited the Deendayal Research Institute (DRI) and Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidhyalaya and got acquainted with various social reconstruction and village development works in Chitrakoot. The academic activities of the course will be concluded by first half of April 2016. 2. Orientation Camp The Institute organised classes on Gandhian Thought in an 'Orientation Camp' of fifteen days held at the Sevagram Ashram for the newly admitted students of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences from 16 th to 30 th July, 2015. BRIEF REPORT OF ACTIVITIES

The year 2015-16 marked the completion of twenty eight years of activities of the Institute since its inception in 1987. It also marked the winding up of 125th birth centenary celebration of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj which commenced last year. During this period, the Institute successfully organized a number of programmes in the campus and different parts of the country with special focus on younger generation. The following is a brief account of the important activities undertaken during the year. 11.. OOnnee YYeeaarr PPoosstt GGrraadduuaattee DDiipplloommaa CCoouurrssee iinn GGaannddhhiiaann TThhoouugghhtt

The Post Graduate Diploma Course of this academic year commenced on the first week of July, 2015. Eleven students were admitted to the course, of which three from abroad and the rest from India. Dharmadhikari, Dr. Anand Gokani, Dr. Sathish Gogulwar, Prof. Ramchandra Pradhan, Dr. Ulhas Jajoo, Dr. Sugan Baranth, Dr. Soham Pandya, Dr. John Chelladurai, Shri Bharat Mahodaya and Dr. Siby K. Joseph. To acquaint the students with the life and methodology of Gandhi, a documentary viz. Mahatma: Life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was also screened on the occasion.

33.. SSttuuddeennttss aanndd SSoocciiaall AAccttiivviissttss CCaammpp aatt SShhaahhaajjaahhaannppuurr ((UUPP)) The Institute collaborated with Vinoba Seva Ashram, Bartara, Shahajahanpur in the

organization of 3 days students and social activists camp from 18 to 20 April 2015. The camp was held at the premises of the ashram at Bartara, Shahajahanpur. The main objectives of the camp were to acquaint the younger generation and social activists with life of Gandhi and Sarvodaya philosophy and to understand Gandhi’s approach to social service and village development. The resource persons of the camp were Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Dr. Ram Chandra Pradhan, Shri Ramesh Bhaiya and Vimlaben. Prayer, Shramdan, group discussion, cultural events and sale of Khadi cloths were some of the features of

the camp. Shri Jagannath Yadav, SDO, Shahajahanpur, was the chief guest at the valedictory function. The total number of participants was forty one. 44.. SSttuuddeennttss CCaammpp aatt GGiirriiddiihh,, JJhhaarrkkhhaanndd Under the joint auspicious of Institute of Gandhian Studies, Wardha and Giridih College, Giridih, a camp for students from all over Jharkhand was organized from 25th to 27th August, 2015 in the premises of Giridih College. The objective of the camp was to introduce to the younger generation, the life and methodology of Gandhi and its contemporary significance in dealing with various issues including terrorism and Naxalism. The forty five students representing different regions of Jharkhand were registered for the camp. In addition, a number of students from various departments of the college also participated in the camp. Prof. Ramjee Singh, former Vice Chancellor, Jain Vishva Bharati, Ladnun, Rajasthan inaugurated the camp. The resource persons who delivered lectures on various themes include Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Dr. Ram Chandra Pradhan, Dr. N. K. Ambastha, Dr. Ali Imam Khan and Shri. Pravin Kumar. Prayer, Shramdan and other Gandhian elements of the programme were a new experience for the campers. All the campers and the faculty of the college were highly appreciative of the camp. The camp attracted wide media coverage. 55.. AAlluummnnii MMeeeett

As decided in the Alumni Meet of 2013, the Institute has been regularly hosting the Meet on first Saturday and Sunday of September every year. It was also decided in that Meet

since the days are fixed there is no need for formal communications from the Institute and students themselves will take the initiative for the programme. Accordingly, the Alumni Meet was held on 5th and 6th of September 2015. The 5th September being the Teachers’ Day coincided with the Alumni Meet. Therefore, before the commencement of the programme the P.G. Diploma students along with former students who came for the meet took the initiative in honouring the teachers as a mark of respect to them. The programme commenced with welcoming of the former students and presentation of a brief report of the activities of the Institute in the preceding year by Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of the Institute. The first session was followed by brief introduction of participants and Shri Bharat Mahodaya presented his vision of the future of the Institute. In the sharing session, all of them underlined the fact that the Institute has played a vital role in their own careers as well as their formation as concerned citizens. It was also pointed out that the guidance they received from the Institute opened a new vista before their eyes and broadened their vision. It also helped them in picking up the right career. The participants presented a brief resume of their present activities and their future plans. Some of them also suggested the need for creating new platform comprising the former as well as the present students including some concerned people from sister organizations to launch a major campaign to take Gandhian idea to the youth of the country in a big way. The P. G. Diploma students of the current batch also presented their vision of future plans. It also provided them an opportunity for exchange of ideas with their seniors. The total number of participants was thirty. There was a unanimous view that such meeting should be continued as it is very useful for all parties involved in the process. 66.. MMaahhaarraasshhttrraa UUnniivveerrssiittyy SSttuuddeennttss'' CCaammpp The residential Gandhi Vichar Camp for University Students from Maharashtra was held at the Institute’s campus from 7th to 12th September, 2015. The camp was conducted in Marathi and Hindi, and the participants were from all parts of Maharashtra region. The total number of participants was 63 representing 15 districts of Maharashtra. Of which, ten of them

were Post Graduate students. The Post Graduate Diploma students of the Institute also participated in some of the sessions. Prayer, community work, agriculture, visit to the ashrams and constructive organizations in and around Wardha, preparation of the handmade soap, group discussions, exhibition cum sale of Khadi cloths/books on Gandhian Thought and cultural events along with academic sessions were the unique features of the camp. The resource persons who addressed the

camp were Shri Ashok Bang, Dr. Ramchandra Pradhan, Dr. Somnath Rode, Ms. Aparna Pallavi, Dr. Ulhas Jajoo, Dr. Tarak Kate, Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Dr. Soham Pandya, Shri Shamsuddin Tamboli and Dr. Siby K. Joseph. All the participants appreciated the camp very much and they expressed the view that the camp helped them to understand the contemporary significance of Gandhi and they got the inspiration to spread the Gandhian values in their respective institutions. 77.. IInntteerrnnaattiioonnaall NNoonn--vviioolleennccee DDaayy aanndd RReellaatteedd PPrrooggrraammmmeess

In consonance with United Nations General Assembly resolution of 15th June 2007, the Institute of Gandhian Studies has been observing 2nd October, birthday of Mahatma Gandhi as the International Day of Non-violence. As a part of various programmes of the International Day of Non-violence, the Institute under the banner of the International Non-

violence Day Committee took the initiative to disseminate the message of non-violence and to create public awareness on various issues like growing violence, female infanticide, communal disharmony, environmental issues, alcoholism and cleanliness. A meeting of individuals committed to non-violence and representatives of various organizations and institutions was organised on the 21st September, 2015 at the Seminar hall of the Institute to chalk out the details of the programmes. Another meeting was organized on 28th September 2015 basically to ensure participation of school children in the International Day of Non-violence programme.

On the 2nd of October, the Committee organised a Padyatra from Gandhi Statue in the Wardha town to Gandhi’s Ashram at Sevagram. Many public personalities, representatives of many organisations and institutions participated in the programme. Ms.Jihan Azrag from Sudan, a student of the Institute garlanded the Gandhi statute and Ms. Bhavana Uike a student of Shrikrisnadas Jajoo Grameen Seva Mahavidyalaya, Pipri, Wardha flagged off the rally. The programme ended with a public function at the Sevagram Ashram.Shri Jaywant Mathkar, President of the Sevagram Ashram welcomed all persons who participated in the rally, guests and others to the function. Dr. Abhay Bang, Founder Director, Society for Education, Action and Research in Community (SEARCH), Gadchiroli delivered the key note address. His keynote focused mainly on Hindu Muslim Unity and prohibition. He called upon the people of Wardha to tell the Government what we need is ‘Gandhi for Today’ and not ‘Gandhi for Tomorrow.’ For that government should take initiative for complete prohibition in Wardha by scrapping the individual permits which allow the addicted and medically approved persons to possess and drink their quota of liquor. The function was chaired by Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute. Dr. Shriram Jadhav, Secretary of the Sevagram Ashram, proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was attended by more than 1500 people. In the afternoon of 2nd October, a collective spinning programme was organised in the premises of the Institute. On the same day a new environment club viz. ‘Nisarg’ was also established primarily to create awareness and concern about matters relating to environment.

The film club of the Committee screened a number of documentaries and films to

create awareness among people on various issues of which the society is confronting throughout the year. The Institute observed the 25th of November as Environment Awareness day. It was observed with discussion on the importance of basil plant, plantation of five traditional plants in the campus and discussion on environmental issues. The programme was attended by more than fifty five persons. 88.. RRaavviinnddrraa VVaarrmmaa MMeemmoorriiaall LLeeccttuurree

Shri Surendra Kumar, Former Secretary of Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi and activist of Bihar Andolan delivered ninth Ravindra Varma Memorial Lecture on 9th of October, 2015 on the topic J.P’s Ideological Journey from Student Movement to Total Revolution. Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of the Institute, gave a brief introduction about the programme and the life and contributions of Shri Ravindra Varma, founder Chairman of the Institute. Shri Surendra Kumar began his memorial lecture by highlighting the contributions made by Shri Ravindra Varma as young leader of student and youth movement and his active

involvement in the freedom movement of the country and later in JP’s movement. He said “JP was actively involved in the Bhoodan movement throughout the country with focus on Bihar and UP in the context of increasing Naxal menace in these States. Later in view of Naxal threat in Bihar, he concentrated on Mushari Block in the Muzaffarpur district of the Bihar State. He realized that only through channelizing youth energies a radical change could take place in the society. Therefore, he started the student movement. It finally took the shape of total revolution.” Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute presided over the meeting. The

On 4th November, 2015, a special meeting was organized at the Seminar Hall of the Institute at 4.00 p.m. to conclude 125th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj during the year 2014-2015. Shri Agus Indra Udayana, Ashram Gandhi Puri, Bali, Indonesia and recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj Award for promoting Gandhian Values outside India for the year 2011 was the chief guest of the programme. In his address, he stated that the life of Jamnalal Bajaj is a source of inspiration especially for the younger generation. “I am proud that I am a student of Institute of Gandhian Studies and recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj International Award. The Institute is a real tribute to the life of Jamnalalji.” Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute, in his address narrated the life and unique personality of Shri Jamnalalji. Two articles written by Dr. Siby K. Joseph on the life and ideals of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj were circulated among all participants in the programme and he also spoke on the occasion. Prof. Suresh Pandhripande, formerly Head of the Department of Gandhian Studies, Nagpur University presided over the function. The programme was attended by more than fifty participants. In the morning, a programme was organized at Gitai Mandir on the occasion. The students, faculty and staff members also participated in the programme organised at Gitai Mandir. 1100.. The Institute joined hands with Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, Mumbai, in welcoming Jamnalal Bajaj Award Winners- 2015 at Wardha on 2nd December, 2015. The award winners visited the Paunar and Sevgram Ashrams, and other important places in Wardha. A felicitation function was arranged at the Seminar Hall of Jankidevi Bajaj College of Science, Wardha at 4.30 p.m. Shri Sanjay Bhargava, Chairman, Shiksha Mandal, Wardha, welcomed the guests and Shri. Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute, gave a brief introduction about the programme. A documentary depicting the life and work of Jamnalal Bajaj Awardees was screened on the occasion. Dr. Minoru Kasai, Professor Emeritus, International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for promoting Gandhian values outside of India; Ms. Anne Ferrer, Founder Member, Rural Development Trust, Anantpur (Andhra Pradesh) and recipient of the Award for Development and Welfare of Women and Children; Shri. Man Singh Rawat, Sarvodaya Sevak,

Haldukhata, Kotdwara, (Uttarakhand) and recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contribution in the field of Constructive Work Shri. P. Vivekanandan, Founder, Sustainable-agriculture and Environmental Voluntary Action (SEVA) Virattipathu, Madurai (Tamil Nadu) and recipient of the Award for Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development were felicitated on the occasion. The dignitaries were duly introduced by Dr. Abdul Bari, Ms. Humera Kazi, Shri Govind Lakhotiya and Shri Atul Sharma. In their brief talks, the awardees shared their experiences in the respective fields. Shri C. Y. Deshpande of Bajaj Science Centre, Wardha proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of the Institute conducted the programme. The programme was attended by more 200 people representing educational, Gandhian and constructive organizations and institutions in Wardha. 1111.. LLeeccttuurree ooff PPrrooff.. On the occasion of visit of Prof. Minoru Kasai, Professor Emeritus, International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan and recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for promoting Gandhian values outside of India for the year 2015; a special lecture was arranged at the Seminar Hall of the Institute of Gandhian Studies on 3rd December, 2015.The theme of lecture was Gandhian Revolution in the World. In his lecture, he narrated his first encounter with Gandhian values. It was in the year 1959 when he heard Martin Luther King Jr.’s preaching in the Princeton University Church. Gandhian revolution was born and spread through King in America. Though King was assassinated the spirit is still alive that is why

In his talk he highlighted Gandhian Revolution in the world with special focus on America, the Philippines, South Africa and Japan. He described Gandhi as one of the most advanced revolutionary leaders of the world. Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of the Institute, introduced Prof. Minoru Kasai and welcomed all the awardees. The lecture was followed by interactions with Jamnalal Bajaj award winners for the year 2015. Shri Bharat Mahodaya,

The annual residential Gandhi Vichar Camp for University students was held from the 23rd to 30th of December, 2015. Prayer, community work, visit to ashrams and constructive work organizations in Wardha, screening of films, group discussions, library work and cultural events were the unique features of the camp. The Camp was conducted in English and Hindi and lectures were delivered by Shri C. S. Dharmadhikari, Dr. Ramjee Singh, Dr. Ramchandra Pradhan, Dr. Shubhada Pandey, Prof. Jeevan Kumar, Shri Shamsuddin Tamboli, Dr. Tarak Kate, Shri Bharat Mahodaya and Dr. Siby K. Joseph. The camp was highly appreciated by students from different universities of India and students from Nepal and the teachers who attended the camp. The total number of participants was fifty eight. The students of the Post Graduate Diploma Course run by our Institute also participated in the camp.

The Institute of Gandhian Studies organised an Inter Religious Study Course from 20th to 22nd of February, 2016 on the theme Religion and Problem of Social Cohesion with

focus on Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. This course was held at the campus of the Institute. One day was devoted to the study of each religion. The discourses on the theme of the course were delivered by Dr. Srivatsa Goswami, Vrindawan; Prof. Mohammad Hashim Qureshi, New Delhi and Dr. John Chelladurai, Jalgaon. The course was attended by students from various universities, social activists, and students of philosophy and

theology. The total number of participants in the course was forty eight. The students of the Post graduate Diploma Course in Gandhian Thought also participated in the Course.

The Institute of Gandhian Studies in collaboration with Nisarga Seva Samiti, Wardha organized a training programme cum Workshop on Social Service on 12th and 13th of March, 2016. The main objective of the progrmme was to create a group of volunteers who would like to serve in the field of social work and related areas. Shri. Bharat Mahodaya, Shri. Ajit Kulkarni, Dr. Soham Pandya, Shri. Muralidhar Belkhode, Dr. Priti Joshi, Shri Mithilesh Kumar, Shri. Vinesh Kakade and Shri. Pravin Satokar were the resource persons of the programme. The programme was attended by seventy persons. The workshop discussed a number of themes including formations of NGO’s, team building, mobilisation of resources and NGO Government interface. 1155.. The Institute organised a Youth Leadership Camp on “Gandhian Philosophy, Management and Economy” in collaboration with Acharya Bhrigugiri Purvottariya Veda Vidya Pratishthan, Guwahati (Assam) at Acharya Bhirigugiri Purvottariya Veda Vidya Pratishthan, Guwahati (Assam) from 19-21 March, 2016. The Camp was conducted both in English and Hindi. Acharya Bhirigugiri inaugurated the camp and Ms. Biju Borbaruah of Asha Darshan Trust (Assam) delivered the valedictory address. Dr. B.B. Kumar, Prof. Ram Chandra Pradhan, Shri Surendra Kumar, Shri Bharat Mahodaya and Mr. Neilh Gautam were the resource persons for the camp. The major themes discussed in the camp include life and fundamentals of Gandhi, Gandhi and youth, Gandhi’s Approach to leadership and management, Gandhian Economy, Gandhian approach to issues of North-East and combating violence through non-violence. The total number of participants was thirty Seven.

The Institute organized a camp on Gandhi and Youth for students of colleges and universities and youth in and around Wardha on 31st March, 2016. The purpose of the camp was to introduce the life and philosophy of Gandhi and his message to younger generations. The camp was organized in the seminar hall of the Institute. Lectures in the camp were delivered in Hindi and Marathi by Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Shri Prabhakar Pusadkar and Dr. Ram Chandra Pradhan. Thirty students participated in the programme.

1177.. OOtthheerr PPrrooggrraammmmeess

a. South East Asia Tour Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of Studies and Research went on a tour to South East Asian countries viz. Singapore, Hong Kong and Maacu from 26th April to 9th May 2015. He visited a number of institutions during the course of his visit. It is worth noting that during the last leg of his trip, he visited the historic Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at 3, Race Course Lane, Singapore. The foundation stone of this memorial was laid by Pandit Jawharlal Nehru in 1950 on his first official visit to Singapore. Now it is jointly managed by Mahatma Gandhi Memorial and the Hindi Society. During the visit, he held discussions with the Mrs. Udichi Pandey, Principal of The Hindi Society about the activities of the Society and the Memorial and offered the Institute’s collaboration by sharing the publications of the Institute for the library of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial.

b. Visit to Kingdom of Kuwait

Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute went on a brief tour to the Kingdom of Kuwait in connection with the work of Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation on 15th and 16th of June 2015. During the visit, he had opportunity to understand the different facets of Islamic civilization and interaction with many dignitaries. He had the privilege of meeting His Highness the Amir Sheikh Al-Ahmad Al- Al- Jaber Al-Sabah, minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al- Sabah and others. c. Programmes in connection with 125th Jayanti of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj

The Institute joined hands with other organizations in connection with the programmes organized to celebrate the 125th Jayanti of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj. It provided an opportunity for the Institute to contribute towards the promotion of primary education through various activities and programmes especially in the village of Nimsada. The Institute was instrumental in coordinating a series of meetings of various stake holders in the field of education including the Primary Education Officer with the aim of chalking out a concrete plan of action. Besides, a meeting was organized on 17th July 2015 basically to start the intervention in the field by distributing cycles to economically underprivileged students with

help of socially committed people. This programme was jointly organized by the Institute and Janakdevi Bajaj Gramin Vikas Sanstha, Wardha. Similarly another programme was organized on 16th August 2015 to distribute desks to primary school students. This was joint venture of Srujan, Institute of Gandhian Studies and Janakdevi Bajaj Gramin Vikas Sanstha, Wardha. The Post Graduate Diploma Students of the

Institute also got involved in these programmes and they got direct experience of village life and voluntary social action.

d. Lecture of Prof. Ramjee Singh

Prof. Ramjee Singh, veteran Gandhian scholar and former Vice Chancellor, Jain Vishva Bharati, Ladnun, Rajasthan delivered a special lecture Contemporary significance of Gandhi and his ideas on 18th August 2015. He described Gandhi as the greatest figure of the 21st century and his ideas would serve as the real remedy for ills of today and tomorrow. In the course of his lecture, he said “Gandhi was a conscious keeper of the world and a great humanist that is why United Nations declared his birthday as the International Day of Non-violence.” Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director, introduced and welcomed the chief guest and Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of the Institute proposed vote of thanks. The students and faculty of the Institute attended the lecture. It was followed by lively discussions on the theme. e. Ramkrishna Bajaj Smriti Diwas On 21st September 2015, the students, faculty and staff members of the Institute offered floral tributes to Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj in the Seminar Hall of the Institute on the occasion of his death anniversary. It was followed by a lecture from Dr. Ramchandra Pradhan, senior member of the teaching faculty of the Institute about the life and contributions of Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj. He highlighted the contributions of Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj in the freedom movement of the country and his contributions in the students and youth movement. He reminded the students that it is not easy to call oneself as 'Gandhi's coolie'. It needs lot of dedication, commitment and a deep sense of altruism. He said the founding of our Institute was result of work and vision of Shri Ravindra Varma and Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj. f. Interactive Session with Shri Bal Vijay The Institute organized an interactive session with Shri Bal Vijay, former Secretary of Acharya Vinoba Bhave and Convener of Khadi Mission on 24th September 2015 mainly for the Post Graduate Diploma Students of the Institute. Shri Bal Vijay while addressing the

audience, summarized Gandhi’s vision in three key words viz. Spirituality, Scientific Approach and Compassion. He elaborated on these points and stated that application of these ideals would help in mitigating the problems which we are facing today. He advised the students that they should develop independent thinking. He reminded that copying or imitating even a great personality stands in the way of all round development of your personality. He also answered the queries of students regarding Bhoodan and

Gramdan movements initiated by Acharya Vinoba Bhave. Dr. Siby K. Joseph introduced the Guest speaker and Shi Bharat Mahodaya presided over the session. g. Discussion on Women Empowerment Radhaben Bhatt, Chairperson of Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi visited the Institute on the 6th October 2015. On the occasion of her visit, a special discussion session was organized mainly for the Students and faculty of the Institute. During the discussion, she narrated the challenges she had to face as a woman activist. She pointed out that there are certain virtues women naturally possess. The virtues like sympathy, compassion and love help women in combating violence, hatred and conflicts in the society. By following the law of nature, woman should play the role of the creator and feed and enrich the society. She stated that

Gandhi had possessed certain feminine virtues. Women should not forget the natural virtues they posses. Only through nurturing such virtues she can change the present violent society into a peaceful one. . Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute expressed the gratitude for the sharing and discussion. h. Consultative Meet for the International Conference The Institute hosted a consultative meet for three days from 6-8 November, 2015 for the proposed Sevagram International Conference on Non-violent Economy and Peaceful World, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the meeting of Lanza del Vasto with Mahatma Gandhi in 1937 at Wardha. The proposed International Seminar will be held in October 2017. The programme will be jointly organised by Gandhi International (France) and the Institute of Gandhian Studies, Wardha. The proposed Conference is aimed at providing an International forum for exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences for worldwide, Gandhian, nonviolent, peace organisations, institutions and individuals working for a sustainable world. During the meet the representatives of Gandhi International viz. Mr. Loius Campana, President,Gandhi International and recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj Award for promoting Gandhian Values outside India, Mr. Christophe Grigri, Coordinator, Gandhi International and Mr.François Verlet conducted a series of meetings with the faculty of the Institute to chalk out the details of the programme and key areas to be discussed in the conference. Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of Studies and Research of the Institute, facilitated the discussions during the meet.

i. Condolence meeting Shri. Narayan Jajoo one of the founder trustees of the Institute, passed away on 11 December, 2015. To pay tribute to departed soul a condolence meeting was organized at 3:00 p.m. Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Shri Ashok Mehre and Dr. Siby K. Joseph spoke on the occasion. They recollected his association with Shiksha Mandal, Institute of Gandhian Studies and other organization and his contributions. The meeting was attended by about 50 persons including students, staff members and workers of various organizations. j. Kasturba Memorial Day

The Institute commemorated Kasturba Memorial Day on 22nd February, 2016. A special meeting was organized to pay respect to Kasturba Gandhi on her day of demise at 9.00 a.m. Ms. Gabriella Calderaro of Gandhi Centre Pisa, Italy was the chief guest of the programme. Ms. Gabriella in her brief address highlighted the role played by Kasturba Gandhi in the Satyagraha struggles in South Africa especially in 1913. She also narrated the experience of Self Help Groups of Association of Serva Seva Farms (ASEFA) in the empowerment of women in India. Dr. Siby K. Joseph introduced the chief guest and pointed out the role played by Kasturba Gandhi in the life and struggles of Gandhi. The meeting was attended by more than fifty persons. k. Workshop on Peace Studies Dr. J. Gray Cox, Professor in Social Theory, Philosophy and Peace Studies, College of the Atlantic, Maine and co founder of the Quaker Institute for the future USA conducted two workshop sessions on Peace Studies for the students and Faculty of the Institute on 14 and 16 February 2016. In the workshop, he dealt with meaning and concept of peace and major crises the world is facing today. He argued that in the dominant western culture the conception of peace is obscure and it is mainly due to beliefs and institutions in that culture. He

highlighted the contribution of Gandhi in developing alternative culture, where peace is looked upon in a broader and positive manner, which is essential for promoting world peace. He also suggested practical steps to overcome challenges in different fields viz. ecology, governance, technology and corporations. l. Lecture on Shanti Sena With the object of promoting Shanti Sena in the district of Wardha, the Institute organized a lecture on various aspects relating to Shanti Sena on 14 Dec. 2015 at 04:30 p.m. The lecture was delivered by Pof. Ramjee Singh, National coordinator of Shanti Sena. He explained the philosophy and history of Shanti Sena and its present working. He asked the audience to take initiative to start Shanti Sena activities in Wardha. The meeting was attended by thirty five persons. m. Martyrs’ Day The Institute paid homage to martyrs on January 30, 2016 by observing 2 minutes of silence at 11 am and undertaking Shramdhan activity in the campus of the Institute. All members of the Institute, including students and staff participated in the activity. In the evening, a special talk was arranged on the occasion. Radhaben Bhatt, formerly Chairperson of Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi delivered the talk. She paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his day of martyrdom. She stated that people all over the world today are paying attention to life and message of Gandhi than ever before. It is mainly due to problems confronted by humanity today. Gandhi’s method is looked upon as an alternative to come out of the present impasse. n. World Water Day The United Nation has been observing March 22 as World Water Day from 1993 onwards. Taking into consideration the precarious water problem in the district, the Institute took the initiative to create awareness about the preservation and judicious use of water among the people of Wardha. Keeping this objective in mind, the Institute organized a talk on the subject on March 14, 2016. Dr. Soham Pandya, Executive Director, Centre of Science for villages, Dattapur, Wardha, delivered the talk. In his talk, he underlined the importance of water in lives of people and effective methods of preservation of this precious gift of nature. All the participants including the representatives of different organizations took the pledge to take personal initiative in preserving water and observe the World Water Day on the 22nd March. Shri. Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute presided over the function and highlighted the initiatives taken by the institute and experiments in the campus of the Institute. Lecture on Partnership for Peace- Dignity for All: On 21st September 2015, Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of Studies and Research of the Institute, participated in the Peace rally organised in connection with the International Day of Peace celebrations at Bhubaneswar. The programme was organized by Odisha Peace Builders Forum’, Berhampur. He also delivered a lecture on Partnership for Peace-Dignity for All as the Keynote speaker at the function. The programme was held at the Seminar hall of the Institution of Engineers, Bhubaneswar. The revised version of the lecture delivered by Dr. Siby K. Joseph last year on the occasion was jointly published by the Solidarity for Developing Communities (SFDC) and Odisha Peace Builders Forum. It was released by Prof. Radha Mohan, former State Information Commissioner, and chief guest of the function, in the presence of dignitaries on the occasion.

He also guided the Core Committee Meeting of the Forum held in the afternoon which outlined the upcoming programmes of the forum. Workshop on Annihilation of Caste – The views of Dr. Ambedkar and Gandhi: On 21st September 2015, Dr. Siby K. Joseph conducted a workshop for a small group of persons at Action Aid Bhubaneswar regional office, in Saheed Nagar, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. In the workshop, he analysed the points raised by Booker prize-winning author, Arundhati Roy, in her new introduction entitled “The Doctor and The Saint” to the annotated edition of Annihilation of Caste originally written by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. He critically analyzed the views of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and Gandhi on Caste, untouchability and related issues. The workshop was attended by office bearers of Action Aid, social activists and persons working for the upliftment of suppressed and depressed sections of the society. On 4th October 2015, Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute, addressed the participants of National Youth Conference organized by Nivedita Nilayam, Wardha as a guest speaker on the theme ‘Today’s challenges and the Youth’ at the inaugural function. This three days’ Youth Conference was organized in connection with Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Nivedita Nilayam. On 15th October, 2015, Shri Bharat Mahodaya attended a workshop at Centre for Gandhian Studies, Shivaji University, Kolhapur and delivered a lecture on the topic “Misconceptions about Gandhi.” In the course of lecture he dispelled the common misconceptions in the minds of younger generations about Gandhi’s life and thought. Lecture at All India Youth Conference: Dr. Siby K. Joseph delivered a lecture on Approaches to Peace: Contributions of Buddha and Gandhi as a guest speaker at the inaugural function of Technical session of All India Youth Conference organised by International Indecency Prevention Movement, National School of Decency, Yugasrasta Sovaniya Sikhyashram, Udayagiri, Odisha on 3rd January 2016. He stated that Buddha in ancient times and Gandhi in our own times underlined the futility of attempts to control violence purely on physical terms and emphasized the need for rooting them out at the level of human mind. The world owes great debt to these two great personalities for preaching and practising peace, love, nonviolence and compassion. Andhra Mahila Sabha Gandhi Satabdi Bhavan, Foundation Day Lecture: Dr. Siby K. Joseph delivered sixth Andhra Mahila Sabha Gandhi Satabdi Bhavan, Foundation Day Lecture on Peaceful Campuses through dissemination of Gandhian vision of Peace at Gandhi Satabdi Bhavan, AMS Academic Campus, Hyderabad, Telangana on March 14, 2016. In the context of growing violence and unrest in the educational institutions including schools, colleges and centers of higher learning, the lecture emphasised the need for dissemination of Gandhian vision of peace and non-violence in the campuses so that the students and youth would get right kind of orientation which would make them the messengers of peace and would also help them to act as responsible citizens in future. It also suggested practical measures for the dissemination of Gandhian vision of peace in the campuses. On the same day, he chaired and guided the discussions of the syllabus revision committee meeting of academics for the add on elective course on Gandhian Studies for B.A. / B.Sc. / B. Com first year students of Andhra Mahila Sabha Arts and Science College for Women, Hyderabad and also gave an interview at AMS School of Informatics.

Samvatsar Lecture: Justice Shri C.S. Dharmadhikari, Chairman of the Institute, delivered the Samvatsar Lecture of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi on 17th February 2016 at Rabindra Bhawan lawns. In the course of his lecture, he said that today’s world is a terrorized world. Everyone is busy in safeguarding their interests. Nobody trusts the other. In such an atmosphere of distrust and disbelief, how can one trust, love, respect and help the other? How can complete distrust be replaced by complete assurance? Man has become man’s greatest enemy. It is then, the sacred duty of the writer to build bridges through his writing. We have to do a re-thinking and develop a sense of duty than just have an acute sense of rights. He pointed out to august audience that Sahitya means the welfare of all, according to an old definition. And what can be achieved by the pen cannot be achieved by the sword. His lecture was a powerful exposition of Gandhian perspective on literature and assertion of duties and responsibilities of writers. 19. Visiting Scholars and others Shri Nisar Ahamed Khan, Programme Executive, Doordarshan Kendra, Nagpur and his team visited the campus on 19 May, 2015. He held discussions with Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute. The purpose of the visit was to prepare documentary of district level energy park in our campus. Shri Sachin Mohite, President “Samidha,” Pune visited the Institute on 13 June, 2015 and held discussions with Dr. Siby K. Joseph on Gandhi’s concept of Education. Shri Surendra Kumar, former Secretary of Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi and activist of Bihar Andolan visited the Institute on the 26th of July and stayed here for two days. He delivered a lecture on contemporary significance of J. P. Movement on the 27th of July 2015 at the Seminar hall of the Institute for the diploma students. Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of the Institute, presided over the meeting. On 19th August 2015, Dr. John Chelladurai, Associate Dean and Mr. Ashwin Zala, faculty of Gandhi Research Foundation, Jalgaon along with 8 students of P.G. Diploma in Gandhian Social Work run by them visited the Institute. Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute, welcomed the group and gave a brief introduction about the Institute. The group had also interactions with the Post Graduate Diploma Course students. On 23 August 2015, Dr. Geeta Mehta, Director, Somaiya Centre for Studies in Jainism visited the Institute and held discussions with Dr. Siby K. Joseph of the Institute. On 5th September 2015, Shri Kumar Krishnan, a journalist from Delhi visited the Institute and stayed in the campus for a day. During his stay he interviewed Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute about the water harvesting and conservation activities in the campus of the Institute and prepared a write up. On 7th October 2015, Nirakar Beura, an alumnus of the Institute and State Convener, Panchayat Research and Action Group , Bhubaneswar, Odisha, visited the Institute and held discussions with Dr. Siby K. Joseph of the Institute.

On the 5th November, 2015, Shri Agus Indra Udayana, Ashram Gandhi Puri, Bali, Indonesia interacted with students of the Institute and shared his experience as a student of this Institute. On the 7th November a group of 15 students from Madhya Pradesh visited the Institute and stayed in the campus of the Institute. Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute

addressed the group and they had an interaction with the students of Post Graduate Diploma Course. On the 8th November Mr. Karunakaran, former alumnus of the Institute, came to the Institute along with a group of social activists and interacted with the faculty and students of the Institute. On 16th December, 2015 Nehru Yuva Kendra, Wardha organized district level debate competition in the seminar hall of the Institute. On the 17th December, more than hundred students and 10 staff members of Lokmanya High School, Aashti, Wardha visited the campus of the Institute. During their visit, they were shown different solar and other energy systems installed in the renewable park and water conservation methods in the campus. On 22nd January 2016, Shri Shekhar Bajaj, Trustee of the Institute, visited the Institute and held discussions and interactions with the faculty and students of the Institute. On the 29th of January, Mr. Pascal and Maria Laze, Villages Sans Frontiers, France visited the Institute and held discussions with Shri Bharat Mahodaya. They also shared their experience in social service with students and faculty of the Institute. On 12th February 2016, Dr. G. S. Murty of Delhi along with Dr. Srinivas Rao visited the Institute and held discussions with the faculty of the Institute. Shri P. V.Rajagopal, Founder of “Ekta Parishad,” Bhopal and Mrs. Jill Carr Harris Coordinator, international Initiatives, New Delhi and International Coordinator of “Ekta Parishad” visited the Institute on the 28th February and stayed here for three days. During the stay Shri P. V. Rajagopal addressed the students and faculty of the Institute on techniques of Community Organisation and strategies of mobilization and Mrs. Jill Carr Harris about Ekta Parishad’s new initiatives in the field. Shri Sharad Chandra Behar, Former Chief Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh and Founder director of “Eklavya” visited the Institute on the 29th of February and addressed the students and faculty of the Institute on issues in the field of development and education. On the same day Dr. Reva Joshee, Associate Professor and Co- Director Centre for Leadership and Diversity University of Toronto, Canada visited the Institute and discussed about the concept of slow violence and slow peace. On 4th March 2016, a group of students and teachers of Roda Mistry College of Social Work and Research Centre Degree and P.G. College, Hyderabad visited the Institute. Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute welcomed the group and gave a brief introduction about the activities of the Institute. Ms. K. Suma Niveditha, Faculty Member, was the leader of the group. 20. Appointments

In the month of April 2015, Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute, was appointed as a member of International Quality Assurance Cell of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha for a period of two years.

Shri Pravin Satokar, an alumnus of the Institute, was reappointed as Gram Shilpi cum Coordinator of the Institute in May 2015 for a period of six month. On completion of the term, he was again reappointed for a period of one year. In the month of June 2015, Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute, was appointed as a member of Board of Studies of Mahatma Gandhi Fujii Guruji Samajik Karya Adhyayan Kendra of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, for a period of two years. In the month of June 2015, Dr. Siby K. Joseph was selected as a Member of advisory board of Center for Education Environment and Community (CEECo), Banugondi, Hassan District, Karnataka. CEECo is a non-profit organization working in the area of education and community based environmental conservation. Shri Joynal Hossen , an alumnus of the Institute, was reappointed as Gram Shilpi of Tripura in January 2016 for a period of one year. Shri Ganesh Dhote, an alumnus of the Institute, was appointed as Gram Shilpi from 1st of August, 2015 for a period of one year to coordinate the activities of Machala village of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. 21. Gram Shilpi Project

Gram Shilpi Project which commenced in the last year at Wardha made inroads into the Nimsada village with focus on primary education through intervention in some selected areas that would produce long term benefits. The Gram Shilpi assisted in co-ordination and execution of number of programmes at the village and also some of the programmes organized by the Institute. Gram Shlipi of Tripura was instrumental in spreading the message of Gandhi and non-violence through interactive programmes in selected schools, Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar College (formerly Belonia College) and Tripura University. He also supported the peace mission in Kokrajhar in Assam by participating in the peace rally and other activities in Assam. The Gram Shilpi of Tripura also organized programmes in connection with Gandhi Jayanti and Gandhi’s martyrdom. Gram Shilpi of Madhya Pradesh commenced his work in Machala village of Indore in collaboration with Sarvodaya Shiksan Samity in the month of August. To create awareness among the people on various issues and promote all round development of the village, the Gram Shilpi organized Sadbhavana Chinthan Shibir, public rally to create awareness about cleanliness, inter-religious meet to promote communal harmony, formation of Self Help Groups, promotion of organic agriculture and preparation of organic manure, workshop on child rights, orientation programme for children. He also collaborated with the work of National Service Scheme and the National Youth Project. 22. Assessment/Evaluation

In the months of May and June 2015, Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute, as a member of the selection committee of Jamnalal Bajaj Award undertook tours in following places Jodhpur (Rajasthan) Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) Mangalore (Karnataka) Kotdwara (Uttarakhand) and New Delhi to assess the work of respective organizations and submitted the evaluation reports to the screening committee of the Jamnalal Bajaj Award. 23. Research and Publications

The Institute provided academic support to number of research scholars doing M Phil and Ph. D. in various Universities in India and NGOs by providing consultation and guidance

to them on areas relating to Gandhian Studies. It is gratifying to note that they expressed their appreciation and indebtedness to the Institute’s faculty and it shows the growing credibility of the Institute in research and academics. It is worth mentioning that the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University appointed Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of Studies and Research of the Institute as a examiner of a Ph. D. Thesis in August 2015 and later nominated to conduct Viva Voce Examination in January 2016.

Dr. Siby K. Joseph’s paper Understanding Gandhi’s vision of Swadeshi appeared as the first article in the online Gandhi Journal of mkgandhi.org on May 2, 2015. Dr. Siby K. Joseph prepared a review of the book The Living Gandhi: Lessons for Our Times edited by Tara Sethia and Anjana Narayan published by Penguin India Limited in 2013. This book review appeared in the GITAM Journal of Gandhian Studies, Volume No.4, No1, January -June2015. ISSN No. 2249-2240. The journal is published by GITAM University Press, Rushikonda, Visakhapatanam, Andhra Pradesh. The revised version of a lecture delivered by Dr. Siby K. Joseph, as the chief guest of a function organized by Odisha Peace Builders Forum in connection with the International Day of Peace celebrations at Bhubaneswar on 21 September 2014 was published by Solidarity For Developing Communities and Odisha Peace Builders’ Forum. The title of this hand book is Right of Peoples to Peace: A Gandhian Perspective.

Dr. Ramchandra Pradhan, Senior Member of teaching Faculty of the Institute and Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of Studies and Research of the Institute, prepared a research paper titled“ Gandhian Think Tank: A Case Study of Institute of Gandhian Studies, Wardha”. It appeared in the journal Dialogue, New Delhi, Vol.16, No.4, July- September, 2015. Dr. Siby K. Joseph’s paper “Gandhi and Religion” appeared in the newsweekly The Examiner, Vol.166, No.39, September 26-October 02, 2015. Dr. Siby K. Joseph prepared a brief article entitled “Jamnalal Bajaj: An Epitome of Gandhian ideals” on the occasion of completion of 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj. It appeared in all editions of the Hitavada on 4th November 2015. It was also widely circulated in the electronic media. Dr. Siby K. Joseph prepared an article entitled “Going beyond Human Rights”. It appeared in The Examiner, December 5-11,2015, Vol.166, No.49.Another article written by him on the theme of Human Rights Day 2015 viz.“Our Rights Our freedom Always” appeared in The Hitavada, December 7, 2015. A brief article entitled “Mahatma Gandhi” appeared in Marathi magazine Vichaakshan, January 2016, ISSN- 2394-8027. It was the Marathi translation of an article prepared by Dr. Siby K. Joseph in English.

The text of the lecture delivered Dr. Siby K. Joseph at XI All India Youth Conference at Udayagiri in January 2016 was published jointly by International Indecency Prevention Movement, National School of Decency, Udayagiri, Odisha and Center for Education Environment and Community (CEECo), Banugondi, Hassan District, Karnataka. The title of the monograph is Approaches to Peace: Contributions of Buddha and Gandhi. Dr. Siby K. Joseph’s article “Jamnalal Bajaj : An Ardent Disciple of Gandhi” appeared in Sarvodaya Talisman ,January-February 2016, Vol.9, No.6, ISSN-2454-4418. Dr. Ram Chandra Pradhan and Dr. Siby K. Joseph’s article “Jamnalal Bajaj: Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility and Trusteeship” was appeared in Gandhi Marg, October-December 2015 January -March, 2016 Vol. 37, No.3 & 4, II ISSN-0016-4437. The Sahitya Akademi Samvatsar lecture delivered by Justice Shri C.S. Dharmadhikari entitled ßge vius vkidks fQj ls ns[ksa] vk¡[kksa dk p‘ek gVkdjÞ (Let’s look at ourselves a fresh with our spectacles removed) in February, 2016 was published by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi as a monograph . The Institute published a book entitled “Trusteeship: A Path Less Travelled”. This volume is a collection of selected papers discussed in the Seminar on Trusteeship organised by Institute of Gandhian Studies, Wardha in February 2015 as a part of the celebration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Jamnalal Bajaj. It was jointly edited by Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Dean of Studies and Research of the Institute, Shri Bharat Mahodaya, Director of the Institute and Dr. Ramchandra Pradhan, Senior Member of teaching Faculty of the Institute.

The Institute’s publication Essays on Conflict Resolution (2007) edited by Dr. Siby K. Joseph and Shri Bharat Mahodaya was selected as prescribed reading in CBCS Syllabus of M.A. Youth Empowerment (2013-15) elective course (MAYE132) Youth and Peace building offered by School of Youth Studies and Extension Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbadur. Through the website, the Institute has been providing substantial service to the academic community by sharing valuable literature produced by the Institute worldwide, by providing library service and most importantly replying to regular queries relating to Gandhiana. The brief report of the activities of the Institute of Gandhian Studies for the academic year 2014-15 was also uploaded in the website of the Institute to have a bird’s eye view of the activities for the large number of scholars visiting our site.
