    GRIHA CRITERIA NO : 32

    ENERGY AUDIT AND VALIDATION

    RICHA AGARWAL

    Introduction :

In addition to incorporation of green design features during design and construction of a

building, it is equally important to ensure that energy and environmental systems incorporated inthe building are performing as predicted during the design and development stage. Throughaudits, the performance of these systems can be evaluated and the validity of the predictedperformance can be determined.

Incase a system is not performing as expected; the audit process will identify the causefor deterioration in the performance and also provide recommendations regarding for the needfor the up gradations or modifications of the systems.

    Objective :

Validate the performance of the energy and environmental systems in the building as predictedduring the design and development stage.

    Commitment :

After occupying the building, conduct audits for the following within two years of full occupancyand submit audit data as per the specified format. The energy consumption data submittedshould be for at least 12 months.

    1. Energy audita. Energy consumptionb. Thermal comfortc. Visual comfort

    2. Water and waste audita. Water qualityb. Solid waste generationc. Solid waste disposal process

    A. After occupying the building, conduct sound level audit as specified in Criterion 29, tomeasure the following:

    a. Indoor noise levels

    b. Outdoor noise levels

Note Clause A is only applicable to projects that have attempted GRIHA Criterion 29: Acceptable outdoor and indoor levels. Theaudit data should be submitted to ADaRSH in the format specified in Criterion 29.

These audits should be conducted for typical representative days. The audit reports should besubmitted to ADaRSH in the specified format for validation of the information provided at thetime of award of provisional rating. Incase the audit data is not corresponding with the data anddocuments provided at the time of award of provisional rating, the provisional GRIHA rating willbe taken back from the project. However, if the audited data is corresponding with the data anddocuments provided at the time of award of provisional rating, the final GRIHA rating will beawarded to the project.

    B. The energy audit should be conducted by an energy auditor approved by the Bureau ofEnergy Efficiency, Government of India. Water and waste audit should be conducted by acompetent authority.

    Compliance:

The following documents should be submitted.a. Completed audit forms signed by competent authority (building owner/authorized

representative) demonstrating that all energy and environment systems of the buildingare performing as predicted and match the information provided at the time of award ofprovisional GRIHA rating.

    b. Certificate stating that the energy audit has been conducted by an energy auditorapproved by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Government of India.

Appraisal (mandatory and no points) :

The energy systems and water and waste management systems of the building are performingas predicted and match the information provided at the time of award of provisional GRIHArating (mandatory).

    Long Term Benefits

Creating a database for a better energy future

The mandatory energy audit and validation criterion in Griha has enabled projects to recordthe buildings resource consumption pattern.

This will enable creation of a nation wide database for energy performance across differenttypes of buildings in all climate types.

This will help achieve the national energy goals and ensure implementation of the nationalschemes such as bee star rating for buildings etc.

By means of Energy Audit is therefore possible:

To define energy balance of the building.

To characterize the procedures of the prequalification of the systems.

To characterize technical and economical opportunities.

To reduce the plant management expenses

    To improve the comfort.

    Energy Audit allow to:

Understand and define effective energy costs Understand how is energy consumed

    Understand when is energy consumed

    Minimize waste of energy

    Maximize efficiency

Optimize production of energy (also with renewable energy)
