President's Message
I am glad to review the pilot implementation of the Holistic Development of
Family project, launched at the Vardhaman Pratishthan. With the successful
completion of the 1st quarter, it is time to look at the outcome.
The initial anxiety in the minds of all, the Trustees, MS and the community at
large regarding the Holistic Development of Family project amongst the MS
calendar was addressed automatically while implementing the Holistic
Development of Family. As there was no overlap with any of the MS programs, the scheduling made
it easy for all to attend the programs and draw benefit from the same. Our fellow Jains abroad,
mostly USA & UK have also drawn benefit by viewing the MS pravachans ONLINE on a regular basis.
The program implementation has charted new paths for community development, and its
popularity has not been limited to Pune city but the entire nation and globally.
I am glad to note the involvement of MS in the Holistic Development of Family project was good.
Many programs were eventually made open to all seeing the popularity and applicability. There
was good participation and co-operation from all. However participation in some important social
subjects was ignored by the society including Health Management.
Apart from the timelines followed by the MS, 375 hours of different programs for various agegroups were implemented and this has transformed the manner in which a Chaturmas is being
perceived. The key areas of Knowledge Up gradation, Skill Development & Networking among
fellow community members has been on the upswing. This trend has and is being further
developed to enable the real Holistic Development of a Family.
The success of the Holistic Development of Family program during the Chaturmas 2008 has
encouraged BJS to plan and present the forthcoming 4 month Program Guide to the community.
The guide encompasses all the observations, learning & feedback received. We have incorporated
some changes taking into account the wedding season, examinations etc. This calendar is not as
choc-o-bloc as the previous one. We have also included fun-filled events for different age groups
and an edutainment tour for Young Professionals to Bangalore to encourage formation of core
groups. I encourage all of you to participate in all the programs, with family and friends to draw
complete benefit.

F4 Holistic Development of Family(a project by Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana)
C3onceptJains, world over have been known for being an entrepreneurial community, rich in its culture, traditions
and its philanthropic activities.
The Jain Samaj has built religious establishment's like Sthanaks / Upashrays / Bhavan's all across India, for
religious, spiritual and social purposes in all sampraday's. Our Jain Sadhu/Sadhavi's have been working
tirelessly to imbibe the Jain culture, moral and values to society through different platforms via these
establishments.
However, off late, we have been noticing a paradigm shift in the audiences participating in the religious
establishment programs. There is a certain disconnect is our today's samaj. Our younger generation is not
being attracted to attend, for reasons many. It was felt necessary that each of the Jain Families must be a
part of a large networkand have a global reach to enhance and synergise the communitystrengths.
Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana conducted a needs analysis, first a general community meeting, followed by
specific age-group wise meetings to ponder over the needs of society, reasons on low-participation, and
what will encourage themto participate. The analysis drew upon the point that today's Jains are additionally
looking at the Sthanak as a platform for:
1. Networking
2. Skill development
3. Knowledge Up gradation
4. Need-based, age-group wise programs
5. A place where ALL members of the family connect with respective fellow Jains and create a Strong
Jain Community.
Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana announced the pilot implementation of Holistic Development of Family, a
well-researched, technology backed, documented in detail, scalable project which includes programs for
all members of a family in the form of lectures/seminars/workshops/ classes designed to be implemented at
various locations.

Vardhaman Pratishthan is a new sthanak bhavan, built off the Senapati Bapat Road Pune. With its aim to
make the sthanak benefit every age group of all fellow Jains in the nearby areas, the Trust Board approached
Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana (BJS) to present a comprehensive project for Chaturmas 2008. BJS took on the
responsibility with pride and presented its Holistic Development of Family (HDF) project. The same was

Jain Janaganna & Jain Directory:
Overall Analysis
Holistic Development of Family, a new concept, being pilot run at the Vardhaman Pratishthan, Pune was a
trailblazer. A pioneering effort where traditional Chaturmas was conducted with a fresh perspective to
includemodern subjects and programs required by the various thrust areas.
After 20 years of experience, there was a lot of research, planning and strategy to develop the Holistic
Development of Family Program, to carry out the next steps beginning with the Jain Janaganna as the first
step to Chaturmas programs of HDF. Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana appointed people, identified areas coming
under the periphery of Shivajinagar, created a detailed format for requisite data. Teams went from house to
house for data collectionover three months, collected data from community members of all sampradays and
collated the forms alphabetically for purposes of ease. The next step followed was to open the files for
families to recheck and reconfirm the data for two months, since we required correct information on various
aspects of the family. We have received data of 1334 families with a population of 6191.
A comprehensive software package was created for feeding in the data to be analysed. A list of the mobile
numbers was then drawn out of this Census to send out smses during the program calendar to serve as a
reminder. Smses were sent out to all, various age groups, depending on programs and their importance, this
was a small exercise to get the community attuned to the fact of planning which programs they wanted to
attend and do so accordingly.
It will now be prudent to say that, we have analyzed thedata, come to various charts, figures, conclusions at
par with govt. censuses across the country. National level statistical data for various aspects will becompared with that of the Jain Community and details published accordingly. We have decided to come out
with a Jain Directory, most of the work on which is complete. We shall publish this directory from various
aspects of the community in terms of contact details, family businesses, sex ratio, professional lists, boys
and girls of marriageable ages, etc. BJS is now in consultation with the Trust Board of Vardhaman
Pratishthan as to how to make this directory distribution financially viable and finalise a form of distribution
to the samaj.
A total of 80 programs scheduled over a four-month period saw 96% conversion with requests for more.
A summary is being presented below as an overview:

MS Pravachans
Chaturmas,MS&Technology
MS Programs
This Chaturmas was unique when it came to the MS Pravachans. A lot of advanced planning was done and
various meetings were held with MS to identify a 4 Month MS Pravachan Day-wise Calendar. This was a new
and innovative approach in itself for the MS and the community at large, in terms of identifying the topics
sequentially in print. Another addendum was published to explain a little more in detail about the topics MS
were expected to present until Samvatsari.
This waspartially printedin Hindi & English to reach out to larger audiences.
Daily Pravachans were heldvery systematically as per the printed schedule, started on time & ended on time
too. This encouragedincrease in numbers, which led to increase in DharmaBhavna.
There was a good blend of these three crucial elements to create anothernew format of pravachan delivery
to audiences who could not be physically present at Vardhaman Pratishthan. A live website created and
maintained by Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana posted the MS Pravachan in 2 formats i.e. text version and video
version daily. This enabled a lot of fellow Jains living globally to take advantage. Feedback received from
acrossthe globe wasencouraging.
21 days of special occasions such as Guru Pornima, PP Preetisudhaji MS Birthday, PP Anandrishiji MS Janm
Jayanti, Raksha Bandhan, Paryushan Parv, Kshamayachana, Diwali etc. were planned and executed by MS
with the community to bring out the essence & sanctity of the occasion.
Individual MS shouldered responsibilities to participate in the Holistic Development of Family Programs as
per their expertise, interest, training and learning. These included participation in Personality Development
Classes, English Speaking Classes, Empowerment of Girls Classes, Vadhu-Var Parichay Sammelan, the various
lectures & demos etc. They used to start the programs with the NavkarMahamantra, give their blessings and
end them with the Manglik.
This approach has helped the community members to identify
topics of their interests of the Jain Dharma, its applications and its applicability in their lives, to schedule
their calendar in accordance.
Addressing the need of the hour, MSs simultaneously announced many parallel programs for various thrust
areas during the Chaturmas 2008. These included the Sushil Bahu Mandal, Basic Course in Jainism, Quizzes, familygames, dance and drama etc. These programs led to a lot of community participation and bonding.

Demonstrations on Bows, Boxes, 3 Dimension Frames & Making Light Snacks was enthusiastically received by
the children, which sent a message that more of these programs should be on the anvil. Art & Clay, Bal Vikas
Parv, Alphabetical woodcraft & Iris folding, Quiz Grooming, all paid programs didnot take off as planned.
Some programs were very well received, where as some programs did not draw any audiences, in spite of
being conducted by renowned experts. The reasons could be many. One of them being that the timing of the
programs did not suit the children since they already had their daily routine set, which could not be
disturbed or thenthey were already participating in similar programs at other venues.
Some of the above programs initially were on paid basis, however needed to be converted to free programs,as it did not draw registrations. BJS converted these paid programs to free demos to gauge whether the
program was required or the fees were a limiting factor. It was clearly read that the programs were required,
however, the audiences do not want to pay for the same either it is not affordable OR probably because it is
at thesthanak? Is it time to ponder over this jointly?
We also noticed that since children cannot express themselves very well, there may be a possibility that
parentsdid not find value in the programs.
Children's Overall Development is a crucial issue in the current world. Keeping this in mind, BJS called for a
meeting of the parents of the Little Explorers to finalise the programs for the forthcoming calendar. We sent
letters in individual children's names, followed by SMS, very sensitive to the timing of the meeting. A lot of
homework and effort had been put into this exercise. However, of 1100+ letters & 1188 SMS messages, ONLY
10 children were represented.
BJS will be reviewing the attendance in the forthcoming calendar very seriously to gauge whether we need
to continue designing any programs for this ThrustArea or simply remove it from the Vardhaman Pratishthan
Calendar.
If parents wish their children to participate in the VP Calendar, We THEN NEED TO KNOW their requirements
for the Calendar between April 2009 to July 2009, which will include peak Holiday Season for us to plan in
accordance and advance.
