The gig economy, also known as the sharing economy, has garnered a lot of attention and an increasing amount of popularity over the past few years, but has especially made its mark in 2016. From startups embracing the sharing, collaborative model and culture to freelancers looking to grow their skills and services, independent workers have become the fastest-growing component of the economy.
Freelancers now account for nearly 35% of the American Workforce.1 Moonlighting is part of a fast-growing trend to increase choice and independence for the American worker, one that is most likely to transform a number of industries.
Prospects of greater choice, customized service, higher quality and convenience are motivating more and more professionals to create their own jobs and opportunities, leaving the traditional 9-5 full-time employment behind.

MOONLIGHTING REVOLUTION
www.moonlighting.com
Moonlighting has always been centered around the people on the platform by helping them make money and get stuff done. This year propelled that mission forward as all efforts were put toward increasing the number of jobs available and optimizing the marketing products for the freelancers and small businesses.
GIG ECONOMY U.S.A.MOONLIGHTING & FREELANCING AMERICA
In America, extremely diverse motivations, experiences and extent to which they rely on income, prompt people to turn to Moonlighting, freelancing, and entrepreneurship.
From neighborhood handymen to freelance computer programmers to virtual assistants, the gig economy has an impressive array of people looking for jobs and to make money.
• 8% of Americans earned money in the last year using digital platforms to take on a job or task
• 5% of all American adults earned money by performing online tasks through digital work platforms
• 1% each earned money by shopping/ delivering household items or by cleaning or doing laundry for someone

AMERICA’S ECONOMY IN 2017
www.moonlighting.com
NEW YEARNEW PRESIDENT
in the newsOn November 8, 2016, America voted President-elect Donald Trump for office. The impact of this decision is yet to be felt, and the future isn’t known. What does this mean for the gig economy? Though the answer is unknown, nearly 1 in 2 digital gig workers say the income they earn is essential to meeting their basic need.2 With the appointment of Andrew Puzder, who credits start-ups as the driver of the U.S. economic engine, calling “entrepreneurial vision and ambition” the invisible hand of America’s economy, 2017 is looking up.3
Late in 2016, a federal judge issued a nationwide decision that blocks the Department of Labor’s rule requiring overtime pay for more than 4 million workers. The regulation was to take effect on December 1, 2016. The court ruled that the overtime rule as written had raised the salary cap from $455 a week to $921 a week or $47,892 a year. The decision halts enforcement of the rule until the government can win a countermanding order from an appeals court.
This judge’s ruling marks yet another victory for big corporations who take advantage of the labor force. And, while this news is disappointing and arguably discouraging to many freelancers, the future for freelance workers remains bright, with NYC freelancers getting a victory with the Freelance Isn’t Free Law passing October 27, 2016. This requires written contracts for freelance gigs, allows freelancers to file complaints against non and late-paying clients with the Department of Labor Standards, and institutes penalties against clients found guilty of nonpayment in small claims court.4
Freelancers’ success is America’s success.

THE NEXT WAVEFreelancers contributed $1 trillion to the economy in 2015.4 As technology speeds the pace of change and accessibility, Americans are freelancing more than ever. It is encouraging to see all the people joining the Moonlighting platform alone. What is distinguishing and exciting about this independent and privatized sector of the economy is that as it continues to grow, so does diversity, innovation, and motivation.
The future of jobs undoubtedly involves freelancing and small business, and the independent worker is on the rise. The gig economy is evolving, and there are a few trends we predict will happen in 2017.

FUTURE OF MOONLIGHTING
www.moonlighting.com
1. Freelancing will increase as the traditional employment model continues to change. The American job market will see more freelancers and independent workers enter the gig economy in 2017. These upward trending numbers are driven by both millennials who are not able to secure full time jobs and wage stagnation which drags earnings opportunity downward. Freelancing is the gateway to forming a small business and will be a springboard for millions of millennials who will choose to work independently rather than for a corporation. “Moonlighting” will continue to transform and transcend the traditional definition of employment.
2. Advancements in technology drive increased use of mobile platforms. People using mobile devices to secure work will continue to do so as mobile discovery and transaction become more seamless. Like Tinder was to dating, mobile-first marketplaces like Moonlighting will drive connectivity and work opportunities from anywhere. Millennials conducting business virtually find that on-demand, instant platforms give them a competitive advantage over older, less technical candidates along with new ways to earn more money.
3. On-Demand will transcend trend and become the standard. More mobile workers will get hired through their phones and mobile devices because they were available “on-demand.” Millennials making themselves available in real-time leverage idle time and break down the paradigm of conventional 9 to 5 employment.
4. Social media continues to vitalize a multitude of industries. The power of social media is far reaching and now grows to include self-driven commerce. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and SnapChat generate billions of dollars in ad revenue by giving people the opportunity to start their own personal business and expand it within their platform. Entrepreneurs abound; social media enables them and democratizes work. Through enhancements in technology, these platforms will expose and educate those eager to earn.
5. Increased globalization of the Gig Economy. The gig economy is a worldwide revolution but still in its infancy. Employment marketplaces that “uberize” the hiring experience and accelerate income opportunities for millions will have the power to vitalize economies. This will legitimize freelancing and open up more opportunities for workers across the globe.
