"The EPA reconmends that:

(1) a Class C reserve for Conservat ion of Flora and Fauna,vested in the W.A. Witdf i fe Author i ty, be declared north-eastof Yuna, the boundaries to be determined after complet ion ofsurveys coordinated on one hand by the Director of Fisher iesand Wildl i fe and on the other hand by the Under Secretary forMi-nes for c lar i f icat ion of their interest by mining companies( s i c ) ;

(2) the status, purpose and vest ing be reviewed by the EpAat the end of the l -977 calendar year taking due cognizanceof the existence of the much smal ler East Yuna reserve".

The recomrnendat ion was endorsed by Cabinet on 20 October 1976.

This report is based on two surveys of the area conductedduring 1977. The f i rst took place from 8 March to 17 Marchinclusive and the second from 12 September to 2l Septemberinc lus i ve . I I I1ETHODS

The vegetat ion was examined J-ni t ia l1y from a low-f ly ing aircraf tand later by traversing aI I avai Iable access tracks on the ground(Fig. I ) . T\ . renty-eight representat ive si tes were chosen fordetai led observat ion and at each of these si tes est imates ofcanopy cover and measurements of canopy height and diameterat breast he. ight (DBH) (where appropr iate) were made for eachstratrm, and specimens of the most abundant species were cof lectedfor ident i f icat ion.

Except in areas burnt very recent ly the vegetat ion as a whofe wasdense, with a total- canopy cover of 702 or more, separated intousualJ-y three but occasional, ly only two layers. The upper canopy,however, \47as sparse or very sparse over most of the area. Thusi t was considered more appropr iate to adopt, for detai leddescr ipt ion of the vegetat ion, a system of c lassi f icat ionwhich would take account of al l layers than to employ Specht 'ssys tem (Spech t 1970) . During the present study ident i f icat ion of the speciescomprising each vegetation type was severel-y hanilicappedby the lack of flowering material caused by the extremelyclry season. An attempt was made to list the mostconspicuous components of each layer of the vegetationat each col lect ing si te but many specimens ' especial lyfrom the heath and low/dwarf scrub layers remain uniclentified.A short l is t of the most conspicuous species associatei l wi theach of the major soi l types is given in Table 4. Therelatively small size of the total area under survey anclthe seral nature of much of the vegetation made it impracticalto at tempt the descr ipt ion of al l iances (sensu Specht) wi thini t .

fn al-1 68 species of birds were recorded in the Wandana area.Of these 38 species were passer ines and 30 were non-passer ines.

Most specj-es recorded. have widespread distr ibut ions and cou]dbe expected in this area. Only the Bourke Parrot (Neophenabouz,ki i , ) is at the l imit of i ts range, i ts stronghold beingin mul-ga (Acacia aneura) country in the Murchison and theinter ior .

Most of the Wandana Area consists of sandpfain and dunes withshrub mal l -ee and, Bankszla thicket vegetat ion. The fol lowingbirds were noted only in this habi tat : White-backed Swal low,Pipi t , Chestnut Quai l -Thrush, Splendid Wren, White-wingedWren, Redthroat, White-fronted Chat and Crimson Chat. TheRedthroat, a species which has decl ined in the wheatbel t ,was common.

Areas of fow wood]and and associated tree ma] lee and. MelaLeuca/Acacia thicket are of l imj- ted occurrence but provide habitatfor some species not seen in the shrub mal lee. These incl-ude:Red-tai led Black Cockatoo, Li t t le Corel- l -a, Bourke Parrot ,Boobook Owl, Tree Mart in, Chestnut- tai led Thornbj-11, Str iatedPard.alote and Grey Currawong,

Doubt less the prevai l ing drought condit ions restr icted thenumber of species, especial ly in September. Thus, f ivespecies of Honeyeater were recorded in March but only twoin September. The proposed. reserve is very r ich in rept i ]es with at least41 species occur ing there. This r ichness is due to the WandanaArea being a region where the south-western, coastal and aridzone faunas overlap, and to the area being comparatively largeand undisturbed.

Scientists and Departments involved in nature conservationhave, over the years, supported the devel-opment of a seriesof conservation reserves along or near the boundary of theSouth west and Eremaean Botanical Provinces (Anon. 1965,Conservat ion Through Reserves Committee 1974) because:

( i ) the area is of scient i f ic interest, containing manyvegetat ion format ions, plants and animals found onlyi-n the Interzone.

( i i ) there are few large reserves in the Wheatbel t andbecause of extensive clear ing few more can be declared.Reserves placed along the interzone wiI I protect atleast a proport ion of wheatbel t species, and

( i i i ) many south western species reach the l imit of theirgeographical range in this region and scient i f ic studyof species in such places is of value in determiningthe adaptations of species to their environment andthe factors which l imit d istr ibut ion and abundance.

Fig. 1 shows the boundarj-es of the proposed nature reserve atWandana. The boundaries have been drawn to provide as regulara shape as possible whi le protect ing signi f icant port ions ofthe var ious vegetat ion format ions. The area of the proposedreserve is approximately 25 000 ha. The addit ion of a further1 600 ha o f vacan t C rown fand ( fo rmer l y l ease 3116 /442 I ) t othe north of the area designated by the EPA would addsigni f icant ly to the protect ion of the tree malfee format ionwhich is poor ly represented in the proposed reserve.

Thus the area recommended here by us should be considered theminimum and the addit ion of adjoining crown land would increasethe value of the reserve and enhance the chances of the longterm survival of the ful l range of species now occurr ing inan a rea .
