The IYF 2008 brought 200 young people from the ages of 18-30 from around the world who have been actively engaged or interested in this forum. Background The future of global peace lies in dialogue and understanding among different cultures, nations and religious beliefs. Increasingly the world is witnessing the deepening of inter-cultural, inter-national and inter-faith conflicts, especially from the tensions created by the threat of terrorism. To build a peaceful world, there is a need to create safe meeting spaces for youth of diverse backgrounds to engage in dialogue. Youth want to help develop solutions for reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for 2015, especially in relation to poverty alleviation, the rights of education and healthcare, and also the safe-guarding of the environment. Objectives To promote mutual understanding about divisive issues, friendships across barriers, and cooperation among interfaith, international, and inter-cultural youth leaders. To initiate a global youth peace network to provide a creative space for interactions, and social movements. To encourage youth to develop mutual understanding, friendships and global collaborations. Outputs A mutual understanding, friendship and collaboration among youth from different backgrounds. A creative space to interact and share experiences among youth from different backgrounds. This is the report of International Youth Forum 2008 held on June 22nd-30th, 2008 at Asia Africa Building, Bandung Indonesia.IYF 2008 is a forum for youth to learn, share andexperience mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation throughreal conversations on what matters the most, so that they can be theagents of a peaceful change in their own communities. Working GroupWorking group is the essence of this event, during thissession all participants formulated strategic agenda,recommendation and declaration of the InternationalYouthForum2008. Itwas very serioussession, it invitedparticipantstoarguetheirideasandconcepttowardsyouth,peaceandMDGs issues.During thissessionparticipantsdivided into three pods; action, recommendation and

InternationalYouthForum2008 washeldduringeightdaysinBandungandGarutfromJune23rdto30th 2008, organized several activities as follows:

Opening CeremonyInternational Youth Forum 2008 was officially opened onJune23rd2008atAsia-AfricaMemorialBuilding,Bandung, attended by the Deputy of MinistryYouth and Sports, Vice Governor of West Java: HM. Dede Yusuf. This opening ceremony attended by750 guests from Indonesian central governmentandlocalgovernment,IYF2008Participantsfrom32countries,100eventcontributors,guestsfromNGOs, universities, embassies and other guests. This opening ceremony presents IndonesianculturalperformancessuchasAngklunggroupfromBandung Senior High School 3 students, Rampak GendangandMapagceremonybystudentsoftheUniversityofPadjadjaranBandung,choirfromthestudentsoftheIslamicUniversityofBandung.ThisopeningceremonywasveryattractivesinceitwasstartedbyamarchingbandfromBandungInstituteofTechnology,anda Sundanese cultural performance by LSS ITB, this marching bandmarchedfromhoteltotheAsia-AfricaMemorialBuilding.Thisopeningceremonystartedfrom08.00to11.00WIB.Plenary SessionPlenary session was held on June 24th 2008 from 08.30 to 16.30WIBatAsia-AfricaMemorialBuilding.Thisplenarysessiondividedintothreesessions.FirstsessionwasunderthemeTowardaPeacefulWorldSustainability, it was presented by: the Palestinian Ambassador forIndonesia HE. Fariz Mehdawi, HM. Habib Chirzin, the main coordinator of IofC Indonesia, Miftahul Huda. It was an interactive discussion that discussed issues on peaceful world, dialogue among civilizations, youth peacemovementandtheroleofyouthtocreateapeacefulworld.

Secondsessionwasundertheme:TowardtheMillenniumDevelopmentGoals.SpeakersforthissessionwereProf.Dr.GunawanSumodiningratfrom Department of Social Welfare of the Republic of Indonesia;Department of Health of the Republic of Indonesia represented Mrs.Rahmi. This session raised on issues related to the commitment ofgovernmentinachievingtheMillenniumDevelopmentGoalstargetedin2015.Thissessionstartedfrom10.30to12.30WIB.

Thirdsessionwasunder themeStrengtheningYouthas theAgentofChange.ItpresentedsomeprominentspeakerssuchasProf.Dr.AminRais, Rob Lancaster, Sandra van Beest, and Mr. Sudrajat Rasyid.Miftahul Huda spoke of his apology to the Australians for the Bali bombingsasanexampleofpersonalactionandchangetobuildbetterrelationswithAustralia.RobLancastermentionedtheapologyoftheAustralianPrimeMinistertoindigenousAustraliansforsufferingcausedby successive government policies. In this session all participantsshared their experiences and knowledge on youth empowerment,entrepreneurship,youthmovement insucceedingMDGsandyouth’sroleinsustainingapeacefulworld.Thissessionstartedfrom14.00to16.30WIB.

Focus Group Discussion/ Open Space DiscussionThisprogramwasheldonJune25th2008atNewNaripanBandungHotel’s main hall started from 08.30 to 17.00 WIB. This program aimed todiscussanddeepenonissuespresentedontheplenarysessions.This program created a space for participantto create a discussion pod according to theirissue of interest in youth, peace and MDGs.Andthisprogramwasveryinteractivebecauseitinvitedallparticipantstoactivelyparticipateindiscussions.ThisprogramalsoaimedtobestartingpointfortheInternationalYouthForum2008declarationandrecommendation.

Serial WorkshopThis workshop was held at Ganesha Park, Bandung Institute ofTechnology, it involves fifteen different workshops started from 09.00 to 17.30.Thisworkshopserieswerefocusedonthreemainissues:youth,peace and MDGs. The first sessions of this workshop series presented seven prominent organizations and individuals, such as Peace GenerationCommunity,KabandaReneRugwiroTheophilefromRwandapresented on Conflict Resolution workshop, Aliansi Bhineka Tunggal

Ika Community, Persatuan Gereja (Church Union), YMCA, InitiativesofChange (PresentedbyBhaveshPatel).Thesecondsessionof thisworkshop presented issues on MDGs facilitated by: WHO, BKKBN, Kapal Perempuan, WHO Tobacco Control Dept, Association for Community Empowerment,YayasanKarisma(KarismaFoundation),BritishCounciland Department of Health of the Republic of Indonesia.

These workshop activities wereoffered to public, more less 500participants involved in theseworkshop activities, the participantsvaried from IYF 2008 participantsandstudentsfromBandungInstituteofTechnology.TheseworkshopsalsoaimedtosupportthepreparationofInternationalYouthForum2008declaration.

Quiet timeQuiet time was a reflective activity, it invited all participants to reflect on theirlifeandallencounterstheyfacedduringtheforumandshareonthingsthatarematterforthemandcreatetrustamongparticipantsasthebasicvaluesofapeacefulworld.Thequestionsputtoparticipantstoaskofthemselveswere:‘Whatkindofpersondoestheworldneedmetobe?AmIthatperson?Whataretheobstacles?’ Thisactivitystarted from07.00to 08.00 every day of the forum, facilitatedby Miftahul Huda (Indonesia), Rob Lancaster andBarbaraLawler(Australia).

Family GroupThisactivityaimedtocreateaspaceforparticipantstoknoweachotherinafamilyrole-playactivity,whichisallparticipantswereencouragedto share thoughts from Quiet Times, their life experiences and

create trust among familygroupmembers.Thisactivitywas conducted during theforumstartedfrom17.00to17.45.

PROGRAM'S ACHIEVEMENTDuringthisforum,wealreadyachievedsomeresultsasfollows:1. A Mutual Understanding, Friendship and Collaboration Among

Youth From Different BackgroundsOne of the activities which was supported to achieve this target was Quiet Time, it was areflective activity, it enabled all participants to reflect on their life and all encounters they facedduringtheforumandshareonthingsthatare matter for them and create trust amongparticipants as the basic values of a peacefulworld.Thisactivitystartedfrom07.00to08.00everydayoftheforum.

This activity aimedto create a space for participants toknow each other in a family role-playactivity, which is all participants wereencouraged to share thoughts fromQuiet Times, their life experiencesand create trust among family groupmembers. Thisactivitywasconductedduringtheforumstartedfrom17.00to17.45.

2. A Creative Space To Interact and Share Experiences Among Youth From Different Backgrounds.

Live in with local communities, this activitysupportustoreachthistarget,withinthisactivityall IYF 2008 participants stayed with Garutvillagers,theyhavehomestaywiththeGarutvillagers and interact with them. Meanwhileduringthisactivitywedosocialactivitiessuchas planting tree, organizing “people’s party” whichinvolvedGarutvillagers.

declaration pods. This activity was organized in Panawuan Village,GarutWestJavafromJune28thto29.InternationalYouth Forum 2008’ s recommendations and declarationscame out from this significant session.

International Youth Day CelebrationThisactivitywaspartoftheInternationalYouthForum2008

activities, it was specially organized on June 26th 2008 in Ganesha Park,Bandung Institute of Technology, andit presented cultural performances,exhibition, discussions, traditionalfood festival, International Youth Day2008 Celebration evening. Part ofthis celebration was “Voice ofYouth”; it was a session where

youthstatetheirvoicetowardsthecurrentworld’schallengesincluding issues on MDGs. There were five representatives from five different continents they spoke up their voices on the currentworld’schallenges,theywere: 1. BhaveshPatel,UK-representingEurope. 2. Yanisa Paopiamsap (Thailand) dan Daisy (Indonesia) -

representingAsia 3. IvanCastellanosNajera,Mexico,representingAmerica 4. JarkueiMarekAnyuon,Sudan-representingAfrica

International Youth Day ExhibitionThisactivitywasoneofthebigeventsduringtheInternationalYouthForum2008.Thisactivitywasanexhibitionparticipatedby many institutions and organizations that concern with youth, peaceandMDGsissues.Thisactivityattendedby50institutions(local and international). This activity was opened for publicstartedfrom09.00to17.00.

Live-in with CommunitiesDuring June 27th to 29 2008 all IYF 2008 participants stay withthe villagers of Panawuan Village. Four participants in each house,they were from different nationalities, and they were guided by thelocal Panawuan Village youth. This activity created an unforgettableimpression among participants as it expressed during the closingceremonyatSateBuildinginBandung.

Planting Trees and Balloon of Peace Planting trees was organized in Panawuan Village West Java. There were five hundreds trees planted by IYF 2008 participants withthe local villagers of Panawuan. This activityaimed to campaign for solidarity amongdifferences in culture and nationalities. Thisactivitywasamediumtocampaigntopreserveourenvironment.By theendof theprogram,

together all IYF 2008participants and thevillagersofGarutvillageheld the ceremony ofBalloonofPeaceas thesymbol of a peacefulworld.

Social ActivitiesDuring International Youth Forum 2008, the organizing committee also organized some social and charity activitiessuchas:• Cleaninguptheenvironmentandrepairingpublic

facilitiesinPanawuanvillage.• Preparing and giving trashes for the villagers of

Panawuan.BytheendofthesesocialandcharityactivitiesallIYF2008participantssigningtheepigraphinfrontofthe

office of the head of Panawuan village. These series of activities were fully supported by the vice regent of Garut, Bapak Memo Hermawan.

Cultural VisitOn June 26th June 2008 for the whole day went fora cultural visit to SaungAngklungUdjo.Allparticipantsenjoyed the performance ofAngklung there. And afterthat they went for a culinaryvisit in Ponyo restaurant, a

sundanese restaurant. On June 29th 2008, all IYF2008visitedhotspringbathinGarut.Andallparticipantsenjoyed the fresh air andfriendly atmosphere ofGarutbeforetheywentbacktoBandung.

Closing Ceremony and Declaration On June 30th 2008 at Sate Memorial Building, Bandung all IYF 2008 declared Bandung Declaration and followed by closing ceremonyorganized by the Provincial Government of West Java.

…Besidesalloursimilaritiesanddespiteallourdifferences,we share a dream; we dream a better future. Having said that, therearemorethingsthatbindustogetherthanthattearsusapart;wehavenotyetgivenuphopingandthinkingthatwecannotmakeadifferencetothestateoftheworld.Wehavenot yet bowed to the difficulties of chasing a dream. Duringthisactivity,allparticipantsalsodividedintosomeworking groups to discuss on issues presented at theprevioussessions,anditenablesparticipanttointeract,shareanddiscussamongthemselves.

3. A Global Youth Network On Peace Development. One of the most important output of this forum is the

formationofmailinglistwhichwillenableallparticipantstoconnectandcreatealargernetworkofyoungpeople,[email protected],second,togetherwithall IYF 2008 participants Indonesian organizing committee will beinchargeforthepreparationoftheformationofInternationalYouthForumCouncil,whichwillfunctionasthemediumforyouth

a hub for a sustainablecollaboration among IYF

2008 participants. Through thiscouncil each country can send theirrepresentatives and this council will be responsible for the nextInternationalYouthForum,and italsoexpected tobeoneof themedium for youth to express their progressive ideas to manyinfluential international organizations such as United Nations and other organizations. As the first step this forum will be headquartered in Indonesia as the first hosting country of IYF.

4. A Youth-Created Ideas On Strategic Actions and Recommendations Towards Achieving The MDGs By 2015Seriesworkshop,openspaceandplenary sessions, focus groupdiscussion that already organized during the forum contributed

BANDUNG DECLARATION INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FORUM 2008STRENGTHENING THE ROLE OF YOUTH ACTION ON MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS TOWARD A PEACEFUL WORLDWe,thedelegatesfrom32countriesoftheInternationalYouthForumheld at Bandung, Indonesia from June 23rd to 30th 2008, herebydeclarethat:I. All kind of conflicts in the world whether religious, tribal or civil

wars are an impediment to the implementation of MDGs andweshouldpartnertogetherasyouthtoadvocateforapeacefulsolution to all the conflicts which are hindering development. It isourresponsibilityasyouthtotakeouractiveroleinsustainingapeacefulworldforourglobalco-existenceasageneration.

II. Promisedtostrengthensourrole inpublicpolicy issuesinourrespective countries and encourage youth and communitybased organizations inspired by Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)tocontinuewiththeiractivities.

Literacyisonefactorthatincreasespovertyrateamongnationsand act as a hindrance to achieving MDGs. III. Declaredthatfreedomisafundamentalhumanright,andasayouthitisourresponsibilitytoadvocateforfreedomasapanaceatoimplementationofMDGs.Forwithoutfreedom,developmentcannotstart.

IV. Globaldevelopmentiswhenallnationsarefreetopursuetheireconomic activities without hindrances from other nationssuchas fair InternationalTrade. Since trade is thebackboneof economic development and source for financing MDGs, then itisourresponsibilityasyouthtochampionfairtradingamongnations.

V. HIV/AIDS and other Diseases, the forum however recognized the majordevastatingeffectcausedbythisdiseasesonDevelopmentand promised to work individually and collectively to rise HIV/AIDS
