0 Report of the Conference One-day International Conference on “Status of GIRLS in Society: The Indian & Global Perspectives’’ , held on 10 th October, 2018 [in joint collaboration with Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Kalyani] Inaugural Session Indian society has experienced several changing sequences in different era and so as her female population. To assess the position of GIRLS in India and abroad today and their status towards achieving empowerment through education, vocational guidance and other ways in the changing global perspective, the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Kalyani conducted an International Conference in joint collaboration with Plassey college of Nadia captioned ‘Status of GIRLS in Society: The Indian & Global Perspectives’’ on October 10, 2018 at the main building of Plassey College. It was an august assembly of eminent stalwarts and aspirant scholars of varied disciplines from Universities throughout the country. Prof. G.C. Bhattacharya, Former Professor, Benaras Hindu University presided over the Conference.     Inaugural song by Teachers of Plassey college along with the Principal

    The programme wasformally started at 10.45 amwith an auspicious song sungby all the teachers of thecollege along with therespected Principal. It wasreally an excellent event.Following the inaugural songall the dignitaries andacademicians then inauguratedthe conference by traditionallighting of lamp. After that, a

    cordial felicitation was given todignitaries in traditional way

    by the students.In the welcome talk, Principal Dr.

    Pradhan addressed all the luminaries.Then Prof. Debjani Guha introduced all tothe theme of the conference andelucidated on rights of GIRLS in thepatriarchal Indian society and role ofdifferent agencies and media for itspromotion. She made the audiencefamiliar with the memoir of the Centrewith a vibrant presentation and conveyedhearty congratulations to all concernedfor successful organization of theconference. After this, catching the tune ofthe theme, a perceptive presidential address was delivered in style by Prof.G.C.Bhattacharya of Benaras Hindu University. Prof. Bhattacharya expressed his valuedopinion on concept of girls’ rights and empowerment in these male-dominating settings.After that a special address was delivered by the President of Governing Body of PlasseyCollege, Mr. Nasiruddin Ahamed.Then the key-note speech was delivered by Prof. Krishnajyoti Goswami, Faculty of Medicineof Lincoln University College, Malaysia. In his scholarly key note address on healthspectrum of Indian adolescent girls, Prof Goswami highlighted the problems of malnutritionand anaemia. He also focused on the problems of poor nutrition, worm infestations andmenstrual abnormalities, including both menorrhagia and polymenorrhea among adolescentgirls. The inaugural session was ended with the key-note speech.

    Plenary SessionThe inaugural ceremony was followed

    by the Plenary Session which was framedwith two plenary talks. Dr. Biva Kumari ofKalyani University and Lilian Martha SilvaBoleiro of Brazil delivered two thoughtfulspeeches on ‘Status of girls in society’ in bothnational and International perspectives. Prof.G.C. Bhattacharya, senior faculty of BHU wasthere as the chairperson.

    Paper presentation Sessions (both Oral andPoster modes) under the supervision of eminent educationists on the theme - ‘Status ofGIRLS in Society: The Indian & Global Perspectives’ which was framed on sub-themes likeGender stereotyping & discrimination of girls; historical & sociological dimensions behindpresent status of girls; violation of girls’ rights, violence against girls and existing laws, roleof mothers in socialisation of girls, girl child labour, new forms and features ofempowerment of young girls, role of education, society & culture in promotingempowerment of girls; status of girl in India in relation to that of Global World andmeasures for ensuring revitalization of girls’ situation in India and the Globe

    There were about 82 contributory papers. Teachers, Faculty scholars, researchers andstudents from various Universities, Colleges and Institutes throughout the countryparticipated in paper presentation sessions.

    After lunch, paper presentation (oral mode) [comprised of Technical Session 1 andTechnical Session 2; parallel sessions] was started at 1.50 pm at Hall 1 and Hall 2respectively. Dr. Tapati Bhadra Banerjee and Laden Lepcha of University of Kalyani werethe Chairpersons of Session 1. The same role was played by Prof. Partha Sarathi De,University of Kalyani with respect to Session 2.

    Conference was summed up by Director-in-Charge

    Poster Presentation Session- Technical Session 3The Poster Presentation Session was conducted at Hall 3 from 1.50 pm - 3.45 pm. Dr.

    Biva Kumari, KU and Partha Ghosh, Bankura University were the Chairpersons of the event.Sri Probir Baidya was in charge of the entire arrangement of Poster Presentation session.

    Valedictory SessionThe colossal programme

    came to an end with the ValedictorySession keeping Prof. Partha Sarathi De,Dept. of Sociology, University of Kalyani,as the Chairperson.. Prof. Debjani Guha,Director-in-Charge of the Centre forWomen’s Studies, summed up theConference accordingly. The ValedictorySpeech was delivered by Prof. ParthaSarathi De in an animated manner.Certificates were then handed over to theparticipants / paper presenters by thethree stalwart personalities – Prof.G.C.Bhattacharya, Prof. Partha Sarathi De and Dr. Basant Kr. Pradhan. Vote of thanks wasoffered by Dr. Dola Sarkar.

    The conference came to an end at about 4.30 pm with a short wonderful culturalprogramme, organized by the students of thecollege. The entire programme was seamlesslyconducted by Smt. Atriya Sarkar, Smt. MitraSannigdha and Sri Probir Kumar Baidya (with thehelp of college authority, teachers, staffs andstudents and members of the Centre for Women’sStudies, University of Kalyani). At the end Dr.Basant Kr. Pradhan, Principal of the College,conveyed heartfelt thanks to all involved in theconference, for their sheer cooperation and tirelessactivities to make it successful.Video recording of the programme was done.
