Report on the 3rd Balkan Science Journalism workshop Belgrade, April 5, 2019

The 3rd Balkan Science Journalism School 2019, first event of the series of three workshops co-organised by the Center for Ethics in Science and Journalism (CESJ), the Balkan Network of Science Journalists, the Master’s Course in Science Communication “Franco Prattico” at SISSA, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Central European Initiative (CEI) was held on April 5, 2019, from 9 to 17:45, at the Serbian State Television headquarters in Belgrade. The content of the workshop Participants discussed techniques for connecting with the scientific community and effective ways of accessing information from institutions, sharing experiences and looking for ways to strengthen the cross-border collaboration and the regional network of science journalists – and their links with colleagues in Western Europe (see agenda in the appendix). The programme was designed in a modular fashion, to introduce various aspects of science journalism, with an option of having different speakers at different workshops but with similar learning outcomes. This allows for continued use of the basic programme structure for future workshops, but without reliance on any one speaker. So, for example, sessions include lectures on TV science journalism, investigative science journalism, freelancing, and pitching to editors. These are designed to provide a wide overview of different aspects of science journalism for a general audience of people who are relatively new to science reporting – or only have knowledge of a narrow aspect of the profession, as is commonly the case. Also, as the workshops aim to build capacity and teach generalists journalists or early-career journalists with only little experience, morning sessions allow for an introduction to the funder (JRC’s) scientific work, the latest developments/news on the science communication/journalism front (e.g. European/World conference of science journalism), and the general introduction and overview of the field of science journalism: what is it, and why it’s important to do it. Finally, most of the speakers are experienced and accomplished science journalists from the region who can share their skills and experience in a more horizontal, collegiate, and relevant way than speakers from abroad who might lack specific understanding of the region and its particular challenges. In this way, the agile programme structure can quickly and easily be replicated and adapted in the future, with only minor change to adapt to specific invited speakers and audiences. During the whole day the presentations were followed with interest and sparked frequent

interactions among participants, who also engaged in conversations during breaks and during the tour of the studios and the historic archives proposed by the Serbian Radio Television. The program of the day was concluded with a social dinner.

The feedback by participants Participants who accepted to leave their e-mail address were invited to provide feedback anonymously, by compiling a google form few days after the event, with the request to rate specific aspects and the possibility to provide open answers and comments (see appendix for details). The responses – by 21 participants – were overwhelmingly appreciative. The only negative vote (4 out of 10) was assigned to logistics, for inefficient airport pick-up and inadequate communication when the travel agency was contacted. Fabio Turone, who did not fill the form, also had a very negative experience with airport pick-up. The first group of questions asked participants to rate the logistics (the average vote was 8,59 out of 10); the program of the morning (9,18); the program of the afternoon (9,22); the opportunities for networking (8,95) and the social activities (9,13 out of 10). In the second group of questions, all respondents answered they would like to take part in similar events in the future. All except one said that they would recommend this workshop series to their colleagues (the remaining one answered “maybe”). When asked if they think a similar workshop would be appreciated in their country, one respondent answered “no”, two answered “maybe” and all others answered “yes”. All but three (“I don’t know”, “no”, “maybe”) said that they would you like to contribute to the organization of a similar workshop their country. Impact One of the speakers, Ivan Chadjenovic from Montenegro, who spoke about investigative environmental journalism, was invited to be on a jury of CEI SEEMO: Award for Outstanding Merits in Investigative Journalism, based on his presentation at the workshop. https://www.cei.int/prizes/cei-seemo-award-for-outstanding-merits-in-investigative-journalism Media coverage The workshop and the topics discussed also obtained a relevant media coverage, by the host institution RTS – both in video with a 10-minute live interview in the morning show of channel 1 and on the website – and an interview with Fabio Turone by the daily “Politika”.

In general, what did you DISLIKE most of your experience in Belgrade? Everything was fine. We had to wait for a driver to pick us up, and company that was in charge for it was inefficient -whole my free credit on phone was charged only to get information about driver, and I didn't get that info Logistic I did not like that I was not active) This was certainly my fault. I just need one day to get used to the environment and the people. Only%20one%20day%2C%20wanted%20more%20 Nothing Being honest here, couple of presentations were a bit boring, but overall everything was pretty good. I like everything! Yes, indeed! N/A Everything was terrific, great logistics! I would like that the organization of the event would be more professional and also, the topics of the speakers more interactive, not so long etc There was no such a thing, honestly I live here so I really love this town. Everything was good, perhaps an extra day of the workshop :-) / In general, what did you LIKE most of your experience in Belgrade? I liked the workshops and social evening Well-Belgrade. Networking and the series of lectures First I liked Belgrade. I had an opportunity to talk to ordinary citizens and ask how they live and what difficulties they have. As for the event, it was important to listen to colleagues' experiences. Interesting%20speakers%20 -- Presentations of Mico, Fabio and personal experiences of the participants. Meeting and socializing with other science journalists. 1. Learning new professional approaches toward science journalism. 2. Мeeting new colleagues, 3. Networking 4. The great feeling of belonging to a rapidly developing ambitious professionals who share same views. networking opportunities The workshop, the stories of the presenters Opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from different countries! It was a good opportunity to meet people and share the experiences The focus of the program, its duration, balance between formal and informal networking Diversity of people and programme. I liked that it brought together journalists from the region, who most share similar problems and there was a lot of skill and knowledge sharing. Meeting people who work in the same field as I do.

Any additional comment? Great choice of hotel Such events are very important, because in developing countries are weakly developed modern science. -- Thank you very much for the amazing possibility to participate in this workshop, to be able to have more information on science journalism. Looking forward to other workshops Erion Kacorri News 24 television Albania and Balkanweb.com I'll gladly offer my help in organizing or setting up such events in the future. 1. I would be happy on the next workshop to have more time to discuss cross border collaboration and cross border stories related to the region or outside. I have some ideas in this direction and will be grate to contribute and coordinate this activity. 2. Thank you, Fabio and Mico, for the workshop in Belgrade! I am looking forward more workshop like this! Regards, Alexenia thanks for having me! Thank you very much for the incredible job you do! Great work! Such workshops are relatively rare in Belgrade and represent a great opportunity for training and networking with other scientific journalists from the region. This is something we miss in Serbia. Really enjoyed it! Thank you! Perhaps it would have been useful to have some more interactive sessions, even group work (a scenario where you have to work with others) or even something as simple as an introductory/ ice breaker session in the morning or after lunch to move around a bit and meet each other better. This is about logistics - I managed to come to an agreement with JRC to reimburse the costs as I organized my own travel (by car). I know EU has its rules about traveling to conferences and it's always by plane and reservated by them. Many times they organize travel that includes more than one flight even though there are several more economic and ecologic options. I have talked to people who have on a similar occasion traveled from Belgrade to Ljubljana by two planes having to change flights in Frankfurt! Many of us report on climate change and devastating role of airtravel. As we are science journalists maybe we could propose a change of this rules to JRC/EU, especially for further meetings of the journalist from Balkans in the Balkans, where it is often also more time efficient to travel other way than flying (including waiting for planes and traveling form airport to town). Also, if more EU employees would travel by train more often, maybe our railroads wouldn't be as bad as they are :) Thanks for everything, BG was great!
